I totally agree here. If you like Stephenson's style, _Cryptonomicon_ is the kind of book you cannot put down; you just _have_ to read on. >It got me interested in cryptography and the fascinating history of >it, as well as several facets of obscure WWII history I'd never given a >passing thought to before. Having been interested in cryptography and data security for a long time, _Cryptonomicon_ was a treat; Stephenson obviously did very thorough research for the book, and his grasp on and understanding of the finer workings of cryptography and data security seem very good. I couldn't find any technical details that were actually wrong or not plausible. If you liked _Cryptonomicon_, you might also like _Enigma_ by Robert Harris. Although also a very good book, I personally found _Cryptonomicon_ the better of those two. For those finding cryptography fascinating, a very nice popularized introduction and historical review can be found in _The Code Book_ by Simon Singh. Although I have not read it myself, _The Codebreakers_ by David Kahn is also recommended, and it has received very good reviews. >And somewhere in the middle it contains a several-page tangent on the >correct way to eat Cap'n Crunch cereal, which some may consider a waste >of paper and ink, but in my view is a brilliant (not to mention >fall-down funny) bit of character exposition. Yes, same with that very funny part about wisdom teeth. It seemingly has little or nothing to do with the rest of the story, but in my opinion it just adds to the brilliance of the book. >_The Diamond Age_ is a >stepping stone on the way to that - I'll agree that it took me a while >to get into (it was the first Stephenson I read), and while he's gotten >a lot better at it, he still doesn't know how to *end* a story, but I >still enjoyed it quite a bit. It's just a matter of taste. I'm currently reading _The Diamond Age_, and I've really enjoyed it so far. As with _Cryptonomicon_, he seems to have done good research (nanotechnology in this case), although _The Diamond Age_, being a sci-fi story, lends quite a bit more to letting the author devise the technology that he uses in the story. In the summer the gardens become magical - the magnolia and palm trees are lit up, gazebos fringed with phosphorescent lights, the duckpond runs through different colours (violets to blues to greens to yellows and reds), the ducks look confused, mirror balls twirl in the trees, and .. the glow worms probably go into hiding. Most of the acts this summer are lounge/jazz/covers stuff, plus NZ stars from the 50s, all quite amusing and worth a late picnic dinner. I didn't get a chance to mention this when woj brought it up before, but I was completely floored to find that this musical Jan Hellriegel is the same woman who is pretty universally regarded throughout Xena fandom as the worst actress ever to get a speaking part on the show (and believe me, that's saying something :). I was *so* glad to hear that she's got something worthwhile to fall back on. :) Why do musicians think they can act, and vice-versa? Sure, there are a fair number of artists who are successful at both, but there are so many more disasters to tally ... Claudia Christian (Ivanova from Babylon 5)'s forays into the pop genre, for one. Then on the other hand, Mira Furlan (Delenn from Babylon 5) put out a concept album called, descriptively, _Songs From Movies That Have Never Been Made_ that is actually quite interesting. She's got one track that sounds a lot like Enya, another that is a dead ringer for Julee Cruise, and others that are, erm, on a planet of their own. I would actually recommend it to fellow ectophiles who are also B5 fans. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jan 2001 22:02:58 -0500 From: Ian Clysdale Subject: New Rachael Sage album? > Is that actually out yet, or do you just have nefarious ways of hearing it before mere mortals? :) ian. Just in, two disks from mp3.com, recommended by Neile a while back: Waiting For Her - "neon plus" and The Violet Hour - "Galdr". The third is new Hope Sandoval EP, which technically hasn't arrived yet but in the meantime I downloaded all four tracks from Napster. These are my first CD purchases of the year and as if to remind me of the totally artificial nature of all this "new century/new millennium" business, the keyword here has to be CONTINUITY... because the first thing that struck me about both Waiting for Her and The Violet Hour was just how instantly familiar their music was. Here are two bands from the other side of the world I never heard before, yet from the opening notes they feel immediately as if I've been watching them play the local pubs for years. Well, in a sense I have, only they were called Swirl, Bainmaries, Hummer, Something Urban, Iliad... different bands, but they all seem to come from the same place: the inner-city, alterna-pop guitar sound, somewhere between wistful and intense; not quite heavy but not exactly pop, either. From different times and places, all those bands share the same background and approach, to the degree where I can pick any one of them and like with old, familiar, comfortable slippers feel immediately at home. It's not meant as an accusation, no - it's a good thing, most of the time anyhow. The singer from The Violet Hour in particular can sound a lot like Natalie Merchant, though not all the time. As for Waiting for Her, they really, really remind me of our local Iliad (http://www.iliad.com.au, and also an entry on mp3.com if I recall), especially on my favourite tracks: pieces, better girls and fearless. Finally, Hope Sandoval and Warm Invention, "At the doorway again". Again, continuity - this could well be a new Mazzy Star CD! Relaxed, unhurried, yet somewhat smoldering, it picks up pretty much where "Among My Swan" left off. Which is a huge relief for me - I need some Mazzy Star now and then! Slight difference in sound, more like a continental drift than a real change, brings them ever closer to the Elysian Fields. Perhaps they will merge one day :) - ------------------------------------------------------ "The Optimist proclaims we live in the best of all possible worlds.
