Dear friends of Mother Earth, This is not Happy- or Ecto-related, but it is very important nonetheless. What follows is a letter I sent to President Clinton today. Please consider sending him something similar (or simply cut and paste this one). It will only take a few seconds of your time and may help save an important piece of our precious and vanishing wilderness. Email him at president@whitehouse.gov and make sure to include your name, city and state. Thanks, Sharon Nichols __________ Dear President Clinton, It has come to my attention that George W. Bush has openly stated that he wants to open up the Alaska Arctic Wilderness to oil exploration and drilling. It is within your power to stop this action by designating the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as a National Monument. This could be the final and greatest environmental act of your presidency. PLEASE help save and protect a pristine wilderness area from oil drilling and other commercial development. Thank you. Gee, I don't ever think I've ever seen activism work so fast! According to NBC Nightly News, Clinton today *did* sign protection acts for an Alaska wilderness and 3 or 4 others in the western US. Now the trick is to keep Shrub from undoing it all under pressure from the various businesses who helped elect.. I mean, helped put him in office. I usually throw the stuff I listen to the most on the table and almost blindfolded pick 10. Some are actually 1999 releases, but I became aware of them in 2000. Here they are in no particular order. Jack Sutton Harmony Ridge Music www.hrmusic.com Louise Taylor-"Written In Red" Another gem from this artist. I think that makes 5 in a row. She is one of the finest singer songwriters around, an artist of the highest musical integrity. Everything she does just clicks. The guitar work gets right into your blood, so haunting and bluesy. She's a master of melody, and that's the hook combined with the luscious voice that smashes me. www.hrmusic.com/discos/fafram5.html Jess Klein-"Draw Them Near" I feel nearly the same about Jess Klein as I do Louise Taylor, musical integrity just comes to mind. She also has the musical talent both as a writer, singer and arranger to weave it all together and put some tasty morsels on the table. This one has a light country feel to it, a slight hint of a Lucinda Williams voice, but very subtle. www.hrmusic.com/discos/fafram28.html Jennifer Berezan-"Returning" Jennifer's first few albums were basically folk oriented and her 1995 "Borderlines" was highly acclaimed. She like Jess Klein and Louise Taylor are amongst the finest singer songwriters around. However, she has shifted gears and followed her spiritual calling charting new ground. "Returning" is a long playing healing chant recorded in the Oracle Chamber in the Hypogeum at Hal Saflieni, Malta. It's not background music, it requires your full attention. It has a healing soothing feel to it and it literally puts me into a calmer more relaxed and aware state. The power of the piece is how she blends native American essence using Navajo singer Sharon Burch in one instant and then weaves eastern textures using Qwalli singers Riffat Salamat and Sukhawat Ali Khan in the next. It all works and feels right. www.hrmusic.com/artists/jbart.html Liz Meyer-"Regions Of The Soul" I first discovered Liz on a bluegrass album in 1995 called "Womanly Arts". This was a very unusual album in that it was produced in Holland and featured some of the giants of bluegrass including David Grisman, Bela Fleck, Mark O'Conner, and Emmy Lou Harris. However, the most unique aspect of the CD was Liz Meyer's voice. Bluegrass one of my favorite music forms is short on strong female vocals, so the discovery of Liz's incredible high lonesome voice wailing out on that CD makes it one of my all-time favorite bluegrass recordings. However, Liz did not do a follow up bluegrass CD and she vanished from my sight until this year. I found out she has been living in Amsterdam all these years and has been doing the European concert circuit with a guitarist named Mark Cosgrove. They just released a live CD called "Regions Of The Soul" which was recorded in 1999 during their European tour. It's basically a folk album featuring Marks incredible guitar playing and some vocals and Liz's vocals and accordion work. It's just a thrill to hear Liz's unique voice ringing out and Marks tasteful guitar work doing many original Liz songs. One surprise to me was on first hearing Mark's vocals, how similar his and Liz's voices are. They really sound like the male and female version of the same voice. I see how they fit together so well, not only the chemistry but the same voice to boot. A very fine blend of powerful vocals and splendid instrumentation. www.hrmusic.com/discos/fafram3.html "Lisa Kane 'Old Strings And All' Lisa Kane exemplifies the emerging singer songwriter that continues to excite and inspire us. She has the three main talents, songwriting, singing, and excellent musicianship to hurl her into the lofty company of the current crop of young talented singer songwriters. She blends several musical styles seamlessly into a coherent intelligent, good feeling array of songs. Her contemporary musical influences include Melissa Etheridge, Greg Brown, and Dar Williams, but I also sense a subtle 60's and 70's feel to her music. www.hrmusic.com/discos/fafram44.html Karen Tyler "Alone And Blue" This albums just sparkles and is full of some great country blues originals. Her finger style guitar playing and soulful singing is hypnotic. Love Letters is infectious and I it seems like she's wired in Tracy Chapman's voice and soul for this master piece. www.hrmusic.com/discos/fafram7.html Angie Palmer "A Certain Kind Of Distance" I have a special love for the blues especially the old style delta blues played on acoustic guitar. I feebly try to do my best by working on licks with the help of Rory Block instructional videos. So it was a great joy to get two splendid CDs recently in the old blues style by Karen Tyler (see above) and Angie Palmer. Angie Palmer, from England, is also a big fan of Rory Block as well as Patti Smith, Bonnie Riatt, and Joan Armatrading. Angie learned well, she gets the blues right, and really shines on this CD. Her guitar playing is fresh and clean and she keeps your interest by throwing in a great string snap technique reminiscent of the old blues boys. Her songwriting sparkles as well with bluesy, sexy, heartfelt attention to all the details that add up to first class musical creations. www.hrmusic.com/discos/fafram44.html Rita Glassman "Love Songs"/" When I listen to Rita, I'm first taken in by her stunningly beautiful voice. Comparisons to Ofra Haza are right on the mark. However, the content of her songs and the passion and pureness of her delivery are truly inspiring. She is a spiritual being extending her love fueled music throughout the universe. www.hrmusic.com/discos/fafram42.html Marie-Lynn Hammond-" Vignettes /Marie-Lynn Hammond" Thanks to Richard Hess for rescuing these treasure from permanent obscurity. By chance he stumbled on an album by Marie-Lynn Hammond, a Canadian singer, call "Vignettes" issued in 1983. He was so impressed by the quality and depth of work of this artist he gathered all the material available and put her past works on CD. Vignettes/Marie-Lynn Hammond is a double CD combining two of Marie-Lynn's early works. The CD features some of the bicultural Hammond's best work, including songs in both French and English from her successful musical play, Beautiful Deeds/De beaux gestes. www.hrmusic.com/discos/fafram42.html Gwen Avery-"Sugar Mama" this album is a mix of covers and original tunes. Although the covers are excellent, I find the original material really grabs my attention. She is known as the woman with the colossal voice and that's quite evident on the first cut "Sugar Mama". However, there is real depth and feeling emanating from Gwen's song writing and delivery. Her style reminds me of a throw back to a past era, I might call big band blues. I don't think too many people are capable of delivering this material with the drive and soul of Gwen. www.hrmusic.com/discos/fafram52.html Terri Hendrix-"Places In Between" Terri reminds me of the growing number of southern songwriters such as Lucinda Williams, Mary Gauthier, Betty Elders, Tanya Savory and more, that have a country feel but are lyrically a quantum leap ahead of most top 40 country singers. So if you like southern folk/rock with some chewable lyrics "Places In Between" is pretty cool. www.hrmusic.com/discos/fafram52.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 04:07:02 +0100 (CET) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: RE: Pushing a re-release + some of my best buys On Wed, 3 Jan 2001, Phil Hudson wrote: > At 1:55 AM -0500 1/3/01, Brian Errickson wrote: > > >Does anyone have any suggestions for going about convincing a record > >company to re-release an artist on cd? > > Peter Green, the founder of Fleetwood Mac once marched into his manager's > office with a 12-gauge shotgun, demanding that his manager stop sending > Peter any more royalty checks! The thing is that he didn't really succeed except for the checks not reaching him just went into an account somewhere else waiting for him to get to his senses again. So you can say that he did succeed and he didn't :) One of my favorite releases last year was the double Fleetwood Mac live album recorded in february 1970 in Boston. It got to be one of the best live Blues recordings of all time. That 24 mins version of Rattlesnake Shake and the Peter Green 5 mins bass solo on Green Manalishi are both killer cuts but there aren't any less than brilliant moments on the whole 2 discs which IMO many times tend to sour such a recording. The Black Magic Woman version really makes me understand why I hate the Santana cover so much. Velvet Belly got another opportunity to get on my list last year also with the new release of Lucia. The KaTe cover was really worth it - they really did make it their own. Another norwegian band did do wonders both to my ears and to the hit lists. Briskeby's "Jeans for Onassis" ended up being a killer debut album, by a band who did get played on the stations around here even before they did sign their recording contract with Universal. Their demo "Propaganda" did show that it is possible also around here for indie bands to do well. I was a bit sceptic to the album, because of all the hype but it didn't go to their heads and they did pursue their own music and not the company's idea of what they were gonna sound like. And with a singer looking sexy no matter what she's wearing (I did see them in a concert outside - it was cold and raining - and still she managed to look really good packed in layers of clothing :) The Angel's Delight compilation also was among those albums spending lots of time in my CD-player. Some artists I did know before, but most of them totally unknown. Some songs better than others, but none of them less than good. I really enjoyed it! Oh, there are more of them but I just wanted to mention a few :) - -- Yngve ------------------------------ Date: 4 Jan 2001 19:34:46 -0800 From: "Michael Pearce" Subject: Dino Valente At 1:55 AM -0500 1/4/01, steve wrote: >The keyboard playing of Nicky Hopkins dominates Shady Grove. Ah, Dino Valente. One of the biggest disappointments of the '60s-'70s. At the time, I was working for Blue Thumb Records and got to sit in on a recording/rehearsing session that he was doing, pre- QMS. After listening entranced to about 15 minutes of the most intricate and expressive guitar jam I had heard, he just stopped cold. Turns out he was _tuning_! I didn't even think of him as a singer; the rest of the session was all instrumental. I could not wait to hear what he finally did on record. It sucked. None of the imagination, none of the wonderful guitar work. I forgot about him from that point on. I wonder what happened to the talent he displayed that evening. Michael Oh, I really loved QMS, album one, Happy Trails, and to a much lesser extent, Shady Grove. One listen to the next album was all I ever gave it. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2001 20:19:02 -0800 From: "C Goldberg" Subject: Favorites of 2000 Better late than never...
