I'm also in the middle of adding several years' worth of comments about Happy from the list to The Guide. I hope to have it done soon, but there are so many of them it's a little unmanageable. And since just yesterday I finished the 6 month task of moving all my data from Audiofile 1.2 into Audiofile 4.3, I thought I should see what came up. So, turns out she also appears on the Verlaines Some Enchanted Evening. But I didn't get a hit on Melt, so I pulled out my copy, and she's not credited as being on it. She is listed in the thanks though. I was also suprised to see Helen Mountfort (of My Friend the Chocolate Cake) on Melt. So you had no trouble seeing the name of the artist? A couple of others who downloaded that track reported being able to see the title, but not the name. I guess it had something to do with the software I was using, and it made my track even more mysterious than I intended it to be. Yes indeed this was Jan Hellriegel, and thanks to Karen I now have the link to her official website: It was updated a couple of months ago but basically it says the same thing: her third record is in the works... I didn't know about her appearances on Xena, probably because I rarely watched that show... now, if she appeared on Buffy, that would be another matter... - ------------------------------------------------------ "The Optimist proclaims we live in the best of all possible worlds. Veda's songs are _songs_ and not spoken word pieces like "well i guess not" (in fact, this is the only totally spoken word piece of hers I've heard, though "INSTRUCTIONS" comes close. I would say start with her newest cd, "You Do Not Live In This World Alone", though if you're in the U.S., the most readily available is probably _Spine_, which I would have thought was a great starting place but a few other ectophiles haven't liked it. Given/despite all the hundreds (well, probably thousands) of artists we've discussed here on ecto and I subsequently listen to over the years, Veda is my ultimate favourite artist. She has been since _spine_, and everything she's done since _spine_ appeared has simply confirmed that opinion. If you don't at least try her music, you're really missing something. Surprisingly to me not everyone here adores her as much as I do, but many here do. - --Neile - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Jan 2001 15:06:28 -0500 From: Dave Williamson Subject: Best of 2000 As it seems it is that time of year again, here is my personal best of 2000: Radiohead - Kid A Can't say enough about this album. Show in Toronto was also my concert of the year. Leaving traditional pop song structure in their wake, this band is at a level all on their own at the moment. XTC - Wasp Star Colin and Andy return - I never got enough of these guys in the 70s and 80s, and am simply overjoyed that they continue to produce quality pop. Jane Siberry - Hush Who cares if these aren't her own tunes? This is a great album with amazing vocal layers and textures. Wild Strawberries - Twist Why their label would drop them, I'll never know. Superb Toronto husband and wife duo. Michael Occhipinti - Creation Dream (Bruce Cockburn Tribute) Some wonderful jazz readings of a number of Cockburn classics. Branford Marsalis - Contemporary Jazz Wow can these guys play. Concert number 2 of the year for me at the Ottawa Jazz Festival. Sarah Harmer - You Were Here If she continues to produce material like this, I won't miss Weeping Tile. Concert number 3 of the year for me at Barrymore's in Ottawa. Sinead O'Connor - Faith and Courage I had drifted from liking much from Sinead of late, but this is a great album. PJ Harvey - Stories from the City, Stories from the Sky Not quite as complete an album as some of the others above, but I still enjoyed it a lot. Given the borrowing from two of my favourites (Patti Smith and Chrissie Hynde), I probably couldn't help but like it. Doesn't equal 10, but these are the one's that got the most attention from me. Honourable mentions include: Blue Rodeo - The Days in Between Neko Case & Her Boyfriends - Furnace Room Lullaby Emm Gryner - Dead Relatives (but I'd rather play Science Fair) Patti Smith - Gung Ho Smashing Pumpkins - Machina (several great songs but some dead wood brings this one down) U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind (if you can't dance to Elevation, then you should be dead...) Pearl Jam live discs - may have been overkill to release all of these, but there are some superb recordings to be found in some of what I've heard Dave. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2001 13:59:06 -0800 From: "Russ Van Rooy" Subject: top 10, best concerts, and honerable mention for 2000 Hi people. A very happy new year to you all! (I got to ring in the new millenium on a plane. Whee!) I guess it's that time again ... here we go with my Best of 2000 listing. As others have noted, there wasn't a plethora of choices this year, but the stuff I liked, I liked a *lot*. While I wasn't able to think of a round 10 worthy of inclusion on a "best of" list, it's been a while since I've had such a hard time coming up with a #1 ranking. Several discs this year had similar good things going for them. I guess if the album title came to me first when I was trying to figure it out, that must be where my subconscious has put it, so that's how I did the final rankings this time around. (Guaranteed, I'll have a different opinion by the time I post this.) ALBUMS OF THE YEAR 1.) Dar Williams, _The Green World_ This is Dar's catchiest, most accessible, and most unforgettable album yet. Every song is a keeper. Some have criticized her for seemingly turning her back on her folk roots on her way to becoming a pop star, but I for one will happily follow her down this path. Her lyrics are as on the mark as ever, and the melodies are the kind that stick in your head for days. This disc has been living in my car practically nonstop since the day I brought it home, which is always a good sign. I have a feeling that for a long time to come, whenever I want to listen to something by Dar, this is the disc I will reach for. 2.) Susan McKeown, _Lowlands_ Susan returns to where _Bushes and Briars_ left off, interpreting traditional Celtic music in her own uniquely eclectic way. Adding instruments as diverse as the erhu and kora to the more expected fiddles and whistles was a stroke of genius. Over it all, Susan's voice sounds lovelier than ever -- finally, her handlers have managed to capture in the studio how wonderful her voice is in live performance. If anyone harbors any doubt that Susan McKeown is one of the most important Irish musicians out there today, they need to listen to this CD just once. 3.) Erin McKeown, _Distillation_ Years from now, when conoisseurs of fine, non-genre-specific music steeped in the various traditions of Americana look back on where it all began for Erin McKeown, they will put on this album and smile. This young woman has a stellar career ahead of her. From the whimsical "Queen Of Quiet" into the driving, funky-bass-laden "Blackbirds" and on, Erin leads us through cowboy tunes to brooding singer/songwriter goodness, with stops at swing and jazz along the way. Dave Chalfant's production perfectly enhances the songs, so a listen through headphones is always a rewarding experience. I have no idea where I would file this album in a record store sorted by genre. I guess I'd just be forced to label a new bin "Brilliant" and display it prominently there. 4.) Sarah Harmer, _You Were Here_ I do believe this wins the award for "Most Listened-To Album Of The Year". There is not a weak track on this disc. Sarah's voice shines through all of the styles apparent in the songs, from the rocking "Weakened State" to the old Weeping Tile song "Basement Apartment" to songs that would sound at home on a Victoria Williams album, such as "Hideout" and "Coffee Stain", to catchy little ditties like "Uniform Grey" and the moving "Capsized" and "Lodestar". The last 3 or 4 songs do tend to blur together in my mind, but nevertheless this is the first new disc to make it onto my Desert Island list in quite some time. 5.) The Nields, _If You Lived Here, You'd Be Home Now_ My favorite band returns with a refreshing bounce back from their disappointing previous release. Producing and recording this one themselves definitely made a difference. There are very few questionable production decisions here, and the result is a shiny, happy, retro-poppy album with as many Monkees moments as Beatles moments, yet all of it is undeniably The Nields. Katryna and Nerissa's harmonies are as effervescent as ever, and even the song in which David Nields sings lead is a very listenable track. This one also features perhaps the best song Nerissa will ever write, "100 Names". It all adds up to another winner. 6.) Jorane, _Vent Fou_ The new artist discovery of the year. Haunting, ethereal, crunchy, and lots and lots of cellos. What more does one need? 7.) Christine Fellows, _Two Little Birds_ Take Veda Hille and cross her with Robin Holcomb and add just a touch of something along the lines of Rachel's, and you've got Christine Fellows' first CD. This disc is so good, I was inspired to offer to set up christinefellows.com and maintain her official web site. If that's not enough of a recommendation, check this out for yourself. If you like minimalist piano-and-strings arrangements with rather morbid lyrics, this is definitely one for you! 8.) PJ Harvey, _Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea_ I haven't had this very long, but I already know it's very, very good, and I like it a lot. It's not as slick as either of her last two releases, but neither is it too hard-edged like _Dry_ and _Rid Of Me_, neither of which I have ever been able to listen to. It's great driving music. HONORABLE MENTION: - -- Kaitlyn ni Donovan, _Songs For 'Three Days'_ This would probably be on the list proper, but woj has been hogging it so I've hardly had a chance to listen to it! SONG OF THE YEAR (i.e., where the "repeat" button is a must) Dar Williams, "Spring Street" And the live version kicked major butt, too. Yay. LIVE PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR This is a tough one to narrow down. So many choices ... but I think this year it would have to be the Throwing Muses Gut Pageant in Cambridge, MA in April. When Tanya Donnelly came out on stage and started jamming on some old Muses classics and the crowd that was packed into the bowels of the Middle East club went absolutely nuts, it was a little bit of nirvana right there. It was definitely one of those "thank god I had the chance to be there" things. Honorable mention goes to the day Sarah Harmer, Sarah Slean, and Leslie Feist played in my living room. That was pretty darned cool too. :) And now, for the even-more-subjective-than-the-rest-of-this part: DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE YEAR Sinead O'Connor, _Faith And Courage_ I probably shouldn't really label this a disappointment, since quite frankly I wasn't expecting much. But I still was shocked by just how repulsed I was by this album. I'm thankful a friend brought it over for us to listen to before we decided to buy it - I could barely get through that test listen, and I'm very glad I didn't waste my money. Ugh. MUSICAL ABERRATION OF THE YEAR I'm hearkening back to the live performance nadir of the summer for this one: David Roth. The man needs to pick up a few Dar Williams, Richard Shindell, and Susan Werner albums and learn how to write songs. A stop by the words "metaphor" and "imagery" in the dictionary would help, too. Some other random categories that have nothing to do with anything: FAVORITE MOVIE: _Charlie's Angels_. I laughed my ass off for two solid hours. Now *that*'s entertainment. :) BEST MOVIE (yes, there is a difference): _Being John Malkovich_ BEST BOOK: Neal Stephenson, _Cryptonomicon_ BEST TELEVISION SERIES: _Buffy The Vampire Slayer_ And finally ... just when you thought you'd made it safely to the end... (you can skip over this if you want to, I'm just spewing) THE TOP 10 THINGS I WANT TO SEE IN 2001 (in no particular order): - -- Mass demonstrations across the country on January 20, protesting the fact that the man being sworn in as President is not the man we the people elected to that office. - -- A Veda Hille concert. Even if it means having to fly to Vancouver again. - -- More than 2,000 people cramming the park at ectofest 2001, thanks to the wonderful publicity and local press coverage we have received courtesy of the Danbury News-Times. - -- Happy's new album, in one of those big cardboard cutout advertising displays right as you walk through the door at Coconuts record stores. - -- Veda's new album, in one of those big cardboard cutout advertising displays right as you walk through the door at Coconuts record stores. - -- A simple press statement from Novercia, Ltd. stating, "Kate Bush is actually never planning on making music for public consumption again. Please don't waste any more energy waiting." - -- A house concert where not one confirmed reservation fails to appear. - -- A gay couple portrayed in one of those Wal-Mart commercials where they talk to supposedly real customers about how much they love Wal-Mart, and how so wholesomely All-American shopping there makes them feel. - -- A Commitment ceremony between our two heroes, as the last scene of the series finale of _Xena: Warrior Princess_. - -- The Red Sox taking the World Series. (And now you know for sure that this list is surely just wishful thinking!!!)
