A few of you may have seen Luna at Ectofest 2000, where she was not a performer but a spectator who attended the show with us while visiting on the east coast. Later that week, Luna recorded the tracks for "Mariposa" during some impromptu recording sessions at the studio where I work in Manhattan. I mixed and produced the songs, and we happily ended up with enough great material to turn it into a complete album. We are very proud of the results, and I am thrilled to be able to help introduce the music of a wonderful new singer-songwriter to the Ecto community. Luna will be celebrating the release of Mariposa with a performance in New York at the Baggot Inn this Tuesday, January 2 at 7pm. Details are at www.baggotinn.com . She will also be performing for friends at my house in Jersey City, NJ tomorrow (New Year's Eve day) at 3pm. If you are in the area and would like to join us, just drop me a note. Admission to both shows is free. There are some MP3 samples on Luna's website, at www.geocities.com/luna_taylor . And, for a limited time I have posted an extra MP3 at http://home.att.net/~carnivore/Goddess.mp3 . Enjoy! I had the second, hence the quest, and it was worth the wait. Each performance has been unique and rewarding. Usually I get to talk to her for a few minutes after the show. She is real down to earth and has a great sense of humor. And I agree with Meredith that when you see her live, you can't believe those sounds are coming out of her -- She has like a 4 or 5 octave range and it sounds like there are 2 or more people singing on stage. It's incredible! I've seen her with her original band, with Project Lo and also with other band configurations. Every performance has been a real treat for me. Hopefully you will get to see her some day. In the meantime, BUY HER CD'S. Let's support the Ecto artists. Happy new year At 12/28/00 01:28 AM Thursday, Julio Ortega wrote: >Who's met Happy? Okay I'm off to listen to more! i finally realized why this name sounded familiar -- carrie used to front the seattle-based band hammerbox! what i've heard of _home_ so far seems to indicate that she's changed directions a bit as hammerbox were fairly grungey, albeit on the cleaner side of the grunge plate than, say, mudhoney. anyways, she seems to have discovered a rootsier side to herself since the tracks from _home_ i've heard are quite bluesy, something her voice is well-suited for. personally, though, i'm a bit neutral on her new direction. some of it sounds promising but a few songs seem boringly too straightforward for me. i will have to cogitate more. ;) woj ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 23:25:40 -0500 From: recount dracula Subject: april devereaux for the past couple days, i've had this burning desire to listen to sybil vane. alas, i couldn't since i wasn't home where the disc was...but i'm back now and am satisfying the urge. wheee! for those who've never heard of this band (which takes its name from a character in oscar wilde's "dorian gray"), musically they are a fairly crunchy mixture of t'pau, tribe and maybe a twinge of garbage (!). enforcing that comparison, the vocalist, april devereaux, has a voice which is equal parts carol decker and janet lavey. somewhat poppy at times, but very nice stuff overall. anyways, so i got wondering what they've been up to since their one eponymous albumwas released six-odd years ago. so far, i haven't found much. it seems that april was going to work on a solo project , but that doesn't appear to have gone anywhere and the netshow clip at that site doesn't seem to exist any more. (interestingly, sybal vein is refered to as "cybal vein", though there's no explanation why; legal reasons, perhaps?) anybody know what they/she have been up to? woj n.p. guess! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Dec 2000 01:08:18 -0500 From: Mark Chapman Subject: Happy Funnies Out from under my rock I crawl... I hope Happy won't be pissed that I'm retelling this story. On the two occasions that I've had the privilege of seeing Happy (and Project Lo) perform live here in the Washington, DC area, both venues did a crappy job with preshow advertising. At the first gig, at the now-defunct Phantasmagoria club in Wheaton, MD, additional factors including a non-functional club phone line and web page (unrelated) resulted in a really bad audience turnout. Just the same, the meager crowd was treated to a great set of songs by Happy and the boys. During the last song, which was a cover of Bowie's 'Station to Station,' the band was ripping along nicely (it's one of my fave old Bowie tunes), and several minutes into it, Bon L. and the guys stopped cold a la the abrupt ending to The Beatles' 'She's So Heavy.' This left Happy hanging out to dry and finishing a whole line of the lyrics a cappella. The guys all had shit-eating grins on their faces, and all Happy did was turn and say "You mother***kers." It was hilarious and everyone there broke up laughing. I felt bad for the musicians for the lousy turnout, but it was a great evening, as was the more recent show at the Metro Cafe in DC. And I'm greatly looking forward to the next live HR show. Regards, and H.N.Y. '01, ~Chaps ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #391 **************************
