miss mapes, your stream is down.  i am an inveterate list lurker, more like a 
waterbug, cause i only skim the surface a lot of the time, so i only 
discovered it last week,  when you offered the service of kirsty's music.  i 
have been listening non stop since.  i was in the middle of experiencing 
ashley maher for the first time last night when the server went off.
  listening to gogaga is starting to make me gag. will your show be back 
online soon?

to the msn messenger~

hello-

Does anyone here actually talk about Happy Rhodes and her music?

yesyes, I understand this list goes off on whatever tangent the writer
chooses, and isn't it wonderful to share all these way-cool songwriters
we've discovered...

I guess I'm more than justa little naive here, having only been
subscribed for 3 or 4 weeks; but in all that time and nearly 200 posts,
there has not been one mention of the name 'Happy Rhodes' or anything
even alluding to her music. I expected to see  at least *some*
discussion or comments. Although I love everything she's done, I don't
know anything about her, certainly nothing to start a conversation or
thread. I really didn't expect this to be  desolate place as far as HR
info.

One bit of history you may not have learned about yet is that Ecto was
originally founded by people who were chased off the Love-Hounds mailing
list of Kate Bush fans where, during the ever-longer lulls between Kate
Bush albums, people started talking about Happy Rhodes and other less
Kately subjects.  So unlike the "all about Kate Bush, all the time"
slant of Love-Hounds, Ecto has never been intended to be "all about
Happy Rhodes, all the time".

As I recall, the last major discussion about Happy was after the debut
of her auntiesocialmusic.com web site.  Lacking major news about Happy
or a new album from her, things tend to wander a bit.

Of course, if you have questions about Happy and her music, you've
definitely come to the right place to ask.  And, by asking, I'm sure you
could start some discussion about Happy.

Welcome to ecto Drew.  Personally, It's that part of ecto that is 
what makes the list interesting to me.   There have been plenty of 
people who have disagreed over the years, but basically, that's what 
ecto is, and they either come to love it or give up and leave.

The best way to see a discussion happen on a subject you are 
interested in is to start it.  It works a whole lot better than 
sitting around waiting to see if anyone else just happens to bring up 
the subject :)  (Just be warned that just because you feel it's a 
good subject for discussion, doesn't guarantee there will be a 
discussion.)  Feel free to throw out some questions or offer up 
thoughts or impressions of your own.

I'm always amused by people who come here and expect there to be more 
Happy discussions.  I'm just curious what they think the list should 
be like?  Should it consist of all people who have been here for less 
than a year, so they can talk about stuff that is fresh and new to 
them?  Should everyone constantly post that today they listened to 
one of Happy's albums, and it's still great?  There's a lot  of 
people here who have been around for many years, and when you are a 
year away from the last Happy release, no concerts in site, and 
really no news, what Happy stuff are people supposed to talk about?

And how come the only Happy topic new people usually suggest is "why 
don't people talk about Happy more?"  (Does this count as a Happy 
discussion?)

Sure...when it hasn't been two+ years since her last album,
or 3+ months since her last concert, or.....

and this is precisely why we've lasted for the 9 (yes, 9!)
years that this mailing list has been around.  Happy's wonderful,
no doubt about it, but we have enough of a community that we
don't shut down between albums.  For instance, another mailing list
I'm on is gematria, the Peter Himmelman mailing list.  There've
been probably 10 posts in the last two months, yet he's released
albums more recently than Happy, and toured too!

In any event, welcome...

err...huh?  Am I subscribed to the wrong love-hounds or something?

Love-hounds has never been "all Kate, all the time", and was never
intended to be--|>oug has been quite explicit that love-hounds was for
anything vaguely KaTe-like.  Yeah, I know, some love-hounds got all
twisted in a knot by all the HR discussion--some love-hounds will get
all twisted in a knot by the weather (and I seem to recall |>oug
arguing that the anti-HR forces were all wet)--but AFAICT ecto was
mostly a "kinder, gentler" (to coin a phrase) love-hounds (dare I say
a "compassionate" love-hounds?), but otherwise not fundamentally
different.  Except for nominally being about Happy, not KaTe.  And
being a bit younger and less ossified.

Hi!

Welcome to ecto, drew!  I think the others have adequately answered your
question, but I wanted to welcome you and invite you to ask any questions
you have about Happy, since you said you don't know anything about her.  

Also, while I'm here -- I guess everyone else is traveling for the holidays
as well, because it's been really quiet!  I hope everyone is having a good
holiday season.  I'm managing to get through, despite tragedy striking a
bit too close for comfort ... the husband of one of my friends from work
was killed on Friday night, and it turns out that one of the victims of the
shootings at Edgewater Tech yesterday was someone I dealt with via e-mail
during the course of my job.  (That company is employed by one of my
clients to provide the systems for the project my company works on.)
Between that and the losses our musical universe sustained last week, I've
had quite enough, thank you!!

Hello, our DSL service is upgrading their equipment and
as a result I get cut off a lot. When it happens and I'm
not here, I have no way of knowing and turning it back on.

I work full time and have been taking classes at night, plus
I'm out and about seeing movies quite often (4 in the last
week alone: You Can Count On Me, Quills, State and Main, and 
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, all excellent!) My MSN and ICQ 
are always set to Away, because I almost always am nowadays. To
top it off, I haven't been able to log on to an official Napster
server for a week. I could be banned again, but I can't get on
to find out. Until I do find out, I'm hanging out at one of the
OpenNap servers (johnmerricks.squidcafe.com) which requires
Napigator to reach.
