Mine has gotten off to a pretty good start, what with being let off at noon today. Plus, I got to see the Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers (featuring Victoria Williams) twice in the last week. First up they played at the Launchpad in Albuquerque. This is really a rock and roll club, and a somewhat odd place to host the Creekdippers. The audience was surprisingly small too. After seeing the twice in Virginia in audiences of around 500, it was a big surprise to find only around 75 people in attedance (and possibly even less than that the next night in Santa Fe). Regardless of the circumstances, it's always a joy to get to see Victoria perform. I like the Creekdippers ok, and a few of their songs really shine in that folky Neil Young kind of way, but I can't think of anything else like seeing Vic in concert. She's such an amazing earth spirit. They played a lot of tunes from the 4 Creekdippers albums, and all sorts of Victoria songs too. One particular standout was her version of Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, with just guitar accompanyment. It was so beautiful, though marred by the incessant giggling of the drunk women next to me. It's a little bit hard for me to remember the details of that show, since it was eclipsed by the totally wonderful show the next night at the Paramount. As a club, the Paramount just blows the Launchpad away. Plus, they had it set up in small theater mode, so we all got to sit in front of the stage. Things got off to a great start with a mostly local band called The Dolly Ranchers, who seemed to have some sort of Lesbian Jewish Cowgirl thing going on. Not really sure what it was, but more than anything else, they struck me as an all female Rank and File (probably not a very useful comparison to most people). I'm looking forward to hearing some more of them (and also picked up their cd). The sound at the Paramount was great too, so the band fell into the closest thing to a groove that they ever get into. (The previous night, Razz, the fiddle player, told me they lost some cables and didn't have a sound check, so they were going to be kind of ragged. Uh, when are you NOT ragged, I asked. Oh, good point, he said.) They played even more of Victoria's back catalog, included songs like Nature Boy and You Are Loved (my request), which were not played the previous night. She also played A Holy Thing (a song Vic wrote for a show she did with a bunch of gals some years ago - a.k.a, Count Your Blessings) and Chestnuts again. She also did a breathtakingly rousing version of Water From The Well. That's the title track of her new album, which she surprisingly didn't perform the previous night. I still haven't listened to the recorded version, but live, this is an amazing song, full of wildly fanciful scat-type singing. It was the last night of the tour, and Vic just didn't want to stop. 90 minutes in Albuquerque, but 2 hours in Santa Fe. After a long encore, Vic turned to Mark and said: What now? He said, Nothing Vic, we're done. But she wanted to play more, and was frustrated that everyone left. The music in the room came on, and someone yelled, play some solo Vic! So she got them to turn off the music and started to play Harry Went To Heaven. Razz came back on to join her on violin, and it just got better from there. Vic then did a solo version of Blue Moon, and then finished out the night with Happy Come Home. It was a marvelous evening. My cheeks hurt from grinning so much for so long. Afterwards, I got to talk with her for about 15 minutes, and she filled in the names of all her animals on one of my CD's. (She and Mark live at Joshua Tree with 3 dogs and 2 burros, one of whom likes to be punched in the snout a lot.) Probably about as good a musical holiday present as I could hope for. (Though tomorrow my favorite local band is playing at my favorite coffeeshop up the street, where they will be taping for a possible live album, so that should be good too.) cheers, neal np: live - ellis paul ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Dec 2000 18:58:53 -0500 From: Philip David Morgan Subject: Here's the best to everyone!
