Anneli's voice alone is pure magic. On Tundra she combines it with real strings and electronic sounds. The album is much better than Bel Canto's Images, more varied and more intense and not as accessible. Only the second song is bit flat, maybe it should become a hit single. The rest varies from melancholic ballads with strings to experimental electronic tunes ala Laurie Anderson ("Trinitron"). Mandalay - Instinct Instinct is a mixture of some excellent and some rather meaningless songs. It doesn't have the genious of their debut album Empathy (featuring Steve Jansen who doesn't appear on Instinct). The first song is followed by three more or less boring tunes. Just when I started to get disappointed, the 5th track made me change my mind. An uneven rhythm, the instrumentation is reduced to a minimum, and Nicola's high and whispering voice and the vocoder voice causes me goosebumps. The following tracks can hold the standard, a mixture of breakbeats, interesting sounds and samples and a haunting voice. Best wishes, Dirk ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2000 04:46:04 -0800 From: "Suzanna Otting" Subject: Re: This year --- what a way to start a millennium. - -- On Wed, 13 Dec 2000 03:45:54 third damon wrote: >kerry white wrote: >> >> >your mistake is in thinking there is only one year a millennium ends, < >> [ enlighten me, please.] > > >a millenniume nds every millisecond. > >the question is, which millennium are important? Okay, but the plural of millennium is millennia! :) i.e. "which millennia are important" Let's assume we're going by the modern, standard calendar of the Western world-- then next year does start a new millennium according to any reason we count it as momentous, unlike the assumption of all the people who couldn't count and thought it started this year. The songwriting is reminescent of the folky, self-deprecating/self-pitying style of Iris DeMent, while her voice is reminescent of a mix of Iris, Stacey Earle, and Julie Miller (oh wait, she sounds like Julie Miller because that IS Julie Miller singing background vocals). Overall a great folky album--with pretty cool songwriting--definitely an album to look for if you're into these artists. And speaking of Iris DeMent, she is apparently going to be in a new movie called Songcatcher about life in the Appalachians during the Turn of the Century. The soundtrack sounds pretty awesome--Emmylou Harris, Iris DeMent, Maria McKee, Dolly Parton, Roseanne Cash, Gillian Welch, etc. You can read more about it at the Maria McKee web-site (www.mariamckee.net) under News from Maria. Soundtrack should be out sometime early next year. Maria sings "Wayfarin' Stranger" (or "bluffs her way through it"--as she writes). Jeff Hanson n.p. Kasey Chambers - The Captian n.r.
