Not really. European music is mainly typical for its (perky) dance & guitar, but the lyrics are mostly on the 'up' side of life too. Most of the European music I like to listen to as a Dutchman, has a certain clarity and melodic quality. Of course, there's also the house and techno movement which is still very popular in these parts, but I usually steer clear of that. Mylene Farmer is mainly a French (and Canadian) phenomenon. Here in Holland, she's only had one minor hit with "Desenchantee" (1991 or 1992 I think). My guess is that it was mainly the music which attracted the record-buying public, because it was a fast-paced, happy-sounding track. The lyrics (in French of course) went something like this: "Je cherche un ame qui pourra m'aider / Je suis d'une generation desenchantee" (I'm searching for a soul who might help me / I'm from a disenchanted generation"). It's a message that is not generally picked up by the Dutch, since most of us do speak English and German well, but French is often still a problem. Which is why the song was often described as "uplifting". Her success, then, is mainly French. In France, Mylene is a true megastar, comparable to Madonna elsewhere in the world. I hesitate to write this, but she compares well to Kate Bush. Just like Kate, she releases a studio album every 3 to 4 years (the same tempo Kate used to work in), and her live concerts are visual spectacles. Each time Mylene has done a tour, a double CD and video is released. "Mylenium", a double album and DVD/VHS video is released this month, comprising one of her concerts during her last tour, in 1999. There are differences, of course: as stated above, Mylene's music and lyrics often contrast, or, in the case of "Dernier sourire" and "Puisque", compliment eachother well, for they're the saddest songs I've ever heard. Despite not understanding much of the lyrics myself, I understand some of her songs deal with the suicide of a good friend during Mylene's teens. I really hope there's a French member of ecto here who would want to shed some light on Mylene as a French phenomenon. I would have loved to know more about Mylene but since most of the websites and press is in French it's quite difficult. Even the International Fanclub is writing its magazines in French....! Warner Bros. Records describes it as her debut CD which actually it is not, but I'm sure that description makes it sound even better. :) I saw Eliza performing in concert with Joan Baez earlier this year, and she has a lovely voice and is a very good traditional (and original) musician. It seems that with her new album, she will be more original, less traditional folk. Listening to her CD set "Red Rice" the other day, thinking about how good it is and wondering why more people aren't enthralled by traditional music. An official site at: www.elizacarthy.com (by the way, I think that Eliza's hair is much nicer blue than red) Suzanna Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2000 05:16:32 +0300 From: Michael Bravo Subject: hello out there Hello again, it's been years since I was on this list, so probably a lot of new people came in, and some of old ones left (the latter not necessarily true). I have brushed up on my Happy news, experienced a fresh rush of EWS ( read two or three latest digests and first thing I knew I was ordering "The Dreaming Sea" :) ), and decided it was that time of year to resubscribe to Ecto again. So, I'm quite happy to see you all again and look forward to "meet" new people on the list and to know about all kinds of splendid music to please my ears and inner being and to hurt my wallet, too :) Cheers, - -- /\/\ike n.p.
