So when news spread a few months ago that she was in a car accident pretty much everyone in the LA music scene was there to support her. I've seen her since the accident and she's recovering nicely and she was deeply touched by the amount of people that have sent her cards, letters, and money for her medical payments. Anyway, for those of you who weren't at the benefit, here are a couple of reviews from the la-underground list: >>I am glad I went...look, I thought Gallo would play and flew in from Phoenix to see him...instead I was treated to his DADA-ist charadeperforamnce with a BB King look-alike lipsynching and playing air guitar to a new Gallo tune (pre-recorded). All the while some cat stood sidestage with his back to the crowd and the words "YOU LOVE VINCENT GALLO" painted on the back. I guess I needed that reaffirmation as the reality that he would not physically appear on stage slowly settled in. I will say all the time and money spent was made well worthwhile once Tenacious D, Beck and the Go-Go's played (with special guest singers: Anna Waronker from That Dog, Matthew Sweet, and in the finale both Beck and JB of Tenacious D came out. They were incredible...not a huge fan of Beck...but always dug his music - after last night I think I am sure now this guy is really good. He was completely solo, him, the guitar and his harmonica...very tight set! - ----------------------------- >>Well, after fighting with traffic for over two hours (because of the Hollywood Christmas Parade), I finally made it to the Knit at around 8:30pm. A group called Radio Bemba with Joachim Cooder was playing and they were pretty darn amazing. Beck was up next and did a couple of beautiful country songs. The highlight, for me, was the Go-Go's with their guest vocalists: Anna Waronker (MY GODDESS!!), Matthew Sweet, and Jack Black of Tenacious D. Jack was actually joined by Beck during his version of "We Got the Beat." Other great moments were performances by Exene Cervenka, Phranc, and Nels Cline. I got to meet Dave Grohl and Mia Doi Todd in the lounge which was interesting. It was a lot of fun and it so great to see so many people (it was sold out but it didn't look sold out) come out specifically for Petra who is one of the nicest people in the world. I heard there's going to be another benefit concert down in Orange but I forgot the info. Maybe someone here knows. - ----------------------------- >>I, too, was at the Petra Haden show. I'm actually living in San Francisco but I was down in LA for Thanksgiving break. Petra is such a hero to many of us here in Frisco and I was kind of shocked when I heard about the accident. Anyway, I had to be there and wow what a show. I was there from when the doors opened and I'd say it was one of the greatest nights of music I've experienced in my life. Even though each artist's set was way too short, I was very satisfied in the end with the entire show. I loved seeing Nels Cline (one of my heroes) and Solid Eye (I've been dying to see them live for ages). Abby Travis completely rocked. I've never seen her before and she was one of my favorites of the night. Charlie Haden blew me away and Miss Murgatroid was amazing. So much great music; I would have paid a lot more to see just 2 of the artists on the bill. Hopefully, there will be a benefit show up here too because I know a lot of local bands would support the show. ________________ >Date: Mon, 4 Dec 2000 11:52:53 -0800 (PST) >From: Sue Trowbridge >Subject: petra haden (that dog.) > >I just read an article about Beck that mentioned him headlining a benefit >in L.A. for Petra Haden, formerly of that dog. Mike :-) ___________________________________ James Bond Singer's Hits Getting Remixed Propellerheads redoing Shirley Bassey's 'Goldfinger'; Kurtis Mantronik handling 'Diamonds Are Forever.' Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen reports Wed., December 6, 3:02 AM EST A handful of Shirley Bassey's hits are getting a club-conscious makeover on Diamonds Are Forever — The Remix Album, which features some of the singer's biggest hits remixed by Groove Armada, Propellerheads and other dance acts. The Welsh pop-icon's over-the-top emoting and powerful voice are best known from the theme songs to the James Bond movies "Diamonds Are Forever" and "Goldfinger." Propellerheads, who teamed with Bassey on their 1998 single "History Repeating" (RealAudio excerpt), give "Goldfinger" the remix treatment, while Kurtis Mantronik handles "Diamonds Are Forever." The 63-year-old Bassey had a string of U.K. pop hits in the 1960s, including "Reach for the Stars/Climb Every Mountain" and "Big Spender." In 1987, she teamed up with Swiss dance music act Yello for the single "The Rhythm Divine." Also appearing on the 10-track album, due February 13, are DJ Spinna, Kenny Dope and Nightmares on Wax, according to the album's label, Nettwerk Records.
