The task is finding someone who has a decent turntable and preamp that also has a cd burner of some pretension. You don't really want to do multiple generations, but it may be easier to find a DAT, and then go to cd. Peter C ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Dec 2000 18:47:02 -0500 (EST) From: dmw Subject: Re: question On Mon, 4 Dec 2000, JoAnn Whetsell wrote: > Greetings Ectophiles, all-knowledgeable ones, > > i have a question for you > > Does anyone know if you can dub from records (yes, vinyl) to cd? Are there > stores that do that kind of thing for you? What kind of store would you ask > in? I'll cc the list on the offchance anyone else is interested.... There are people who will do this as a service, I've seen ads in some of the more trade-y music magazines, and, I kinda think, Goldmine. If I recall correctly, prices range from $25-$100 per LP. I've never heard of walk-in service, and I think it's very unlikely, because there's no way that the dub could take as little time as it takes to play the record. To make a CD that won't sound horrible when thrown into a changer with your other CD's requires pretty high-end audio equipment. The price may seem hefty, but what you're really doing is re-mastring the recording. It should include the following: * A well-trained set of ears * Filtering to reduce pops/clicks & surface noise, wow and flutter (signal artifacts from things spinning/wobbling, more or less) * Wear and tear on a decent phono cartridge * Compressing/limiting to: + produce a CD of somewhat comparable volume to modern recordings + preserve the musical dynamice characteristics of the original recording + avoid overdriving loud passages (which results in digital distortion/clipping; very nasty). This last is a real trick, and frequently involves some pretty expensive equipment (physical boxes or high-end software plugins). In most cases, to do it "right" means $1000's of dollars. Say it's just a record you love, and you don't want to go the expense/hassle of doing it "right?" the pops and scratches feel homey and comfortable? You have a CDROM burner, a 16bit (at least) soundcard, a turntable, and amp, and don't mind spending $50-75 for some software and a cable or to if you can dub all of your favorite LPs? If so, you might ask... Can you just hook a line-out or a headphone-out from a regular ol' consumer amplifier into your sound card audio input and forget all the fancy stuff? Sure. (What you can't do is take an output directly from a phonograph; it won't be the right level.) If you want to do this: * Defragment a hard disk with at least 650 MB free, preferably 2 gigs or more. * Don't run ANY other apps. * Find what you think is the loudest passage in the music. Set the input level on your audio software so that it's a little shy of the peak.* * Record a side at a time, at 44.1KHz, 16bit, stereo. (Use an audio editor like soundforge or cool edit (www.syntrillium.com) to split the files into individual songs later.) * The files should be suitable for adding to an audio-formatted CDR. * Levels are the big problem. Your CD will be *much* quieter than any commercial CD; you will never be able to throw it in a changer with anything commercially produced, or you'll either be clapping your hands to your ears in pain, or not hearing the transferred LP. If you go *over* the maximum input level, you will generally hear nasty, nasty clicks and buzzes. The biggest problem you face in setting the levels is that human ears are not good at determining where the signal peaks are; what sounds loudest to you is almost never what will sound loudest to the computer, because the loudest sounds are almost always very brief transients. If you record your album side and play it back and hear clicks and buzzes, you'll just have to notch the volume down and try it again. The fancy boxes and plug-ins are much better then the human ear at taming those transients, so you get a louder, clearer signal without losing information that the ear hears as part of the music. that's why they're worth (in many cases) thousands of dollars, and why you may find it worthwhile to lease an hour of the use of the equipment and the time of someone who knows how to use it properly. (there's that $100 again.) I should also note that there are, of course, variations between the extremes. Cool Edit Pro, for about $300, comes with some plugins specifically designed to help make and clean-up vinyl recordings (I can't comment on them in detail, because I've never used them). For $25, I expect that might be what someone selling the service might use; if you care seriously about audio quality, find out what gear is being used and run it by somebody who knowas that sort of gear. The copyright thing looms large here. Actually, I don't think it does, *provided* you keep both the vinyl and the CD, and don't make copies of either for anyone else. That's essentially the same, I think, as making a tape from a record, so that you can (for example) play it in your car, which is protected by Fair Use doctrine. I don't know the Digital Millenium Copyright Act chapter and verse, and it *does* differntiate between digital and analog copies in some respects. But I'm not aware of any provision explicitly forbidding making a digital copy of an analog source for personal use, and the absence of such a specific provision, Fair Use doctrine should prevail. - -- d. np still shanti project collection. this might be of considerable interest to ectophiles, actually, featuring as it does new stuff from Mimi Parker (Low), Kristin Hersh, Paula Frazer (Tarnation), Rebecca Gates, Edith Frost, Julie Doiron and MAdM.
