OK, last time. It seems that out of all of ecto, only four people are continuing this thread, and my POV is one against three. So we agree to disagree, and let that be that. I realize I hold the unpopular viewpoint, but so be it. I realize that each side of an argument feels it has the moral high ground, be it Magneto, Xavier, Hitler, or Churchill. I can appreciate that. The questions to ask are "What are the underlying motives?" and "How do we solve our differences?" If the motives are selfish, if brutality is the means to an end, I for one detest it. I hold the highest admiration for Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Jesus Christ for their teachings of non violence and compassion. And I am saddened by the likes of Adolf Hitler, who was probably a patsy for a greater evil. But that's just me, and I know I'm in the minority here. No, American soldiers did not consider the will of the Nazis. Funny how war brings out the best and the worst in people. At this stage of our development we are settling our differences by force. The sacrifices made by both sides showed concern for others; yet the objectives of the leadership of both sides were vastly different. The Axis made no bones about Deutschland Uber Alles and the Allies fought to liberate those who did not wish to be under Hitler's control. We could go on and on about this, and have been. No one else on ecto cares, and it's way off topic and time to give it a rest. We each follow our own path. I'm sorry I am incapable of conveying the nuances of my beliefs, I just know how I feel inside. There are many layers to this question, and as long as you are comfortable with your feelings, then God Bless You. As no one else on the list seems to agree with me on this subject, I declare that for the purposes of this debate, the majority has won. You hold the popular and electoral vote. Altruism sucks. My high school nickname was Wrong World, anyway. This isn't my home planet! Some future incarnation might be on a world where it's OK to care about others more than yourself, but I know this life isn't it! I'll stick to music posts in the future. I saw London After Midnight on there and kind of... bought something else instead. Justified wariness?" I think I posted on this a couple of weeks back, or at least meant to. I haven't heard the first volume, and this isn't quite my kind of music. What I mean is, I'm not really a goth fan (I don't even really know what goth refers to) but I rather like the disc. The track listing, if anyone's interested is: El Duende--Gaudete, Gaudete Rhea's Obsession w/ Athan Maroulis--We Three Kings London After Midnight--The Christmas Song The Cruxshadows--Happy Xmas (War Is Over) Unto Ashes--Lord of the Dance (my favorite track) The Machine in the Garden--Coventry Carol Faith & Disease--Silver and Gold Lynn Canfield--The True Present Sofia Run--Nerotai Hazarurim (Little Candles) Siddal--In the Bleak Midwinter Thanatos--Silent Night Julia Kent--What Child Is This? Rhea's Obsession--Huron Indian Carol Lycia--O Little Town of Bethlehem Human Drama--I Believe in Father Christmas Judith also wrote: "What are the favorite seasonal discs around the list? I just got my copy of Low's "Christmas" EP and haven't listened to it yet (thinking: we need twinkly lights in a dark room on a snowy night) anything I should be on the lookout for before the stores run out of everything?" I don't know much about the ecto archives, but I'm sure there are lots of posts on holiday music in there. My recommendations (probably mostly obvious) are: Count Your Blessings--Jane Siberry, Victoria Williams, Holly Cole, Rebecca Jenkins, and Mary Margaret O'Hara This live concert album was recently discussed, and I wrote a hearty recommendation of it, but then sent it to the original poster instead of the ecto list at large. Anyway, it's fun, it's wonderful. Child--Jane Siberry Another live concert album. The best of the New York trilogy. A must for JS fans, and heartily recommended for others. Holiday Songs and Lullabies--Shawn Colvin An absolutely beautiful album, on the softer side. Winter, Fire, and Snow--Various Artists My favorite holiday album. Includes stuff from around the world, and ectos Jane Siberry, Julia Fordham, Clannad, Bel Canto, Jewel (proving that she *can* sing when she wants to, imho) and others I can't remember since I don't have the disc in front of me. I love Ottmar Liebert's instrumental, and the songs by the Gipsy Kings and Andreas Vollenweider with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and Manu Dibango especially, but it's really, really good, the whole thing. From Blue Note, the ones that do the "A Very Special Christmas" volumes, the cds Jazz to the World and World Christmas are very good. Plus "The Coolest Christmas" and "The Edge of Christmas" which are both fun, and worth it even if the only tracks you like are the Cocteau Twins' versions of Frosty the Snowman and Winter Wonderland (1 song per disc) The Festival of Light albums are very good. The Billboard Greatest Holiday Hits (forget the exact title) And to tie this all in with the recent "covers" theme, no one besides Eartha Kitt should ever sing "Santa Baby." I just waded through the last 3 weeks' worth of postings ... I have a headache. Just a couple notes about covers: On the topic of covers that redefine the original, I would have to put The Nields' "Black Boys On Mopeds" at the top of the list. A category of covers I haven't seen mentioned in this thread is "Songs that didn't write, but SHOULD have". I'd have to give the award for that one to Susan Werner for "Standing In My Own Way". I didn't know it *wasn't* her song for a long time. Another song in that category would be Cry Cry Cry's version of James Keelaghan's "Cold Missouri Waters", which I'm convinced is a Richard Shindell song that just got misplaced on its way down from the aether. Other good covers I haven't seen mentioned: Kirsty MacColl, "A New England" (Billy Bragg) Sarah McLachlan, "Gloomy Sunday" (Billie Holliday) Tori Amos, "Famous Blue Raincoat" (Leonard Cohen) Tori Amos, "Lovesong" (The Cure) Jennifer Warnes, "First We Take Manhattan" (Leonard Cohen) Cry Cry Cry, "I Know What Kind Of Love This Is" (The Nields) I know there are more, but my brain is frozen. Moving on to covers that are toeing the line of musicide: Alana Davis, "32 Flavors" 10,000 Maniacs, "More Than This" Madonna, "American Pie" Tori Amos, "Losing My Religion" Kate Bush, "Candle In The Wind" Kate Bush, "Lord Of The Reedy River" Whatever hip-hop person/group is currently dismembering Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" on top-40 radio Whatever hip-hop person/group butchered "Killing Me Softly" on top-40 radio a year or so back I think that's it for now... +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Nov 2000 17:33:17 -0500 From: meredith Subject: re: covers Hi! Steve Ito mentioned re Emm Gryner: >She has a certain reverence for "all things 80's", as she would >put it. This reminds me of something that occurred to me recently. It seems that I, along with the rest of my generation (those aged roughly 25 - 35) are now in the "preferred demographic", as determined by - well, you know, Them. The Bagel People who rule the universe, or at least the North American media. How do I know this? - -- Watch even fifteen minutes of a professional sporting event on television. Chances are that 4 out of the 5 car commercials you will see will have 80's "alternative" music in them. I'm thinking specifically of The Smiths' "How Soon Is Now", The Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary" (both over the same ad at different times), and I just heard INXS' "What You Need" in a new one. - -- The ads for CD compilations on late-night cable TV are for various collections of early-80's hits. I shudder to admit that I actually wrote down the 800 number for one of them, because I was having such a cool flashback to 7th grade that I couldn't resist. (So far I have resisted calling the number, though.) - -- In more and more markets, all-80's music stations are popping up. There's one in Chicago, WXYY that I've started setting my rental car radio to when I'm there on business. And just the other night, as woj and I drove to Buffalo for Thanksgiving, we listened to a brand-new 80's station in Rochester that was mostly good, though I was disappointed to note by the end of the snowy drive that in 3.5 hours of listening, we had heard three Def Leppard songs vs. none at all by either Duran Duran or Culture Club. For an 80's station, that's just wrong. Does this make me feel old? Yeah, a little. :} I'm waiting for an 80's station to pop up in Connecticut. I'll be forced to listen if that happens ... scary, I know, but something that will have to be done. The music was the only good memory I have of my adolescence, so why not? +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Nov 2000 20:10:12 EST From: FAMarcus@aol.com Subject: Re: OT: selfishness - my final post on the subject.
