Long time ectophiles will have heard me talking about Emm before, but for those of you not familiar with her, Emm's an independent Canadian singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist (primarily a pianist) in the pop-alternative vein. She's graced the stages of several Lilith Fairs, and toured with the likes of Bernard Butler (ex-Suede), the Cardigans, Chantal Kreviazuk and Rufus Wainwright. When Emm's not busy with the running of her own career and her record label, Dead Daisy Records, she can often be found in her side project as a backing vocalist and keyboard player for one David Bowie. Despite all this she's as grounded as they come, and she loves the intimacy and personal contact of doing these little living room shows, and sees them as a great way to break into new areas. I totally understand your point against it, but that just means that some states/communities do a HORRIBLE job in trying criminals and/or alleged criminals. However, in cases like what happened to my cousin's daughter Ellen, where there is absolutely no doubt the right man was convicted, the penalty is unquestionably just when and where the justice system is played out fairly and properly. It just curdles my blood that this creep is still alive and even though he has been in jail nearly 15 years now, he DOES have a chance to win a release someday. There isn't a week that goes by that every single member of my family doesn't wish this creep somehow dies in prison, preferably not of natural causes. Wake up and face the facts, there's a LOT of scum on this planet, and sometimes the people who commit these crimes simply do NOT deserve to live. I never did accept the argument against the penalty that the death penalty is not a deterrent (the reason former NY gov Mario Cuomo always vetoed it when the state legislators approved it). Who says it HAS to be a deterrent? Again, sometimes these creeps do not deserve to live. My precious 9 year old niece is visiting for two weeks starting tomorrow. Oh, okay, I'm sorry --- I just get fed up with the usual critical laziness, the arbirtrary comparisons, the using of Drake and Buckley as yardsticks when they might not even (as in this case) be remotely appropriate. The critics just think "Sensitive male singer/songwriter? Nick Drake!"(recently, David Gray has been thrown into the mix, as well).
