I got a few new CD's this week..... Suzanne Vega "Solitude Standing" I've been a fan of hers for so long now, just not a huge fan. I have owned DAYS OF OPEN HAND and 98.9 (is that what it's called?) for a long time now. I guess the reason I didn't run out and get anything else by her was because only a couple songs really grabbed me, among them "Book of Dreams" which I am just in love with. Ok, I just have to say I can't stop playing "Luka", it is one of the best pop songs I have ever heard. Suzanne's kind of subtle, rich vocal style really gets me. The third track is one called "Ironbound/Fancy Poultry Parts" which has kind of a desolate, lonely feel. Wonderful song. At this point I started thinking this was going to be the Suzanne album that made me a mega-fan, but none of the other songs really grabbed me. Oh well, it's a great album. Kristy MacColl "Titanic Days" Does anyone hear like her? She sang backup on a Smiths songs and I loved her voice so I bought this. Johnny Marr actually co-wrote a song on this. It's got some great tunes, among them "Angel" and "The Last Day of Summer", very light, very breezy, and her voice is very distinct. I thought it was a little bit overproduced, and some of the songs, like "Bad" are just really throwaway pop stuff. Does she have another album that's better than this one? The Bats "The Law of Things" Finally my Bats collection is complete. I had to look on ebay germany for this, but thankfully I had some Deutsch Marks left so I was able to get a hold of this for what is only 4 dollars in U.S. currency. This was the Bats second album after their masterpiece, DADDY'S HIGHWAY, and it is the natural progression from that point. Somewhat obtuse (as the bats tend to be) very spright and great, haunting, thought-provoking lyrics. I loved it, especially the tune "The Otherside of You". Well, that's it for now, later. I love Kirsty MacColl. _Titanic Days_ is actually my favorite CD of hers. "Can't Stop Killing You" is just a perfect song. And, while songs like "Titanic Days" and "Soho Square" are a little overproduced, they are still two of my favorites of hers. If you are looking to try more Kirsty, I would suggest _Kite_. It includes her cover of the Smiths' "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby" and the Kinks' "Days." And, Johnny Marr is once again present on some tracks. There is also her greatest hits, _Galore_, which provides a nice overview of her career, including her songs with the Pogues and her version of "They Don't Know" (which she wrote and Tracey Ullman made famous). BTW, if you are looking for more Smiths/Morrissey/Kirsty connections, she also sings backing vocals on Morrissey's "Interesting Drug." This made me giggle. The references to Luka also made me think of the Lemonheads' excellent (IMHO) rework of the song as a punkthrashnumber. Evan Dando, who again IMHO is probably a bit ecto and a lot damaged, has resurfaced and done a few shows in Boston, and solo material may show up somewhere sometime. marla tiara ===== ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Famous people wearing my tiara: http://www.marlatiara.com (*updated 9/21/00 - All pictures active!) "Pretty Good Year" was on one of the last BOCA CD's (Best of College a cappella) and after doing a random search one day on Napster, I came across an a cappella MP3 of "Precious Things". Let me tell you, it's the worst thing EVER. Could you pick a worse song to do in a cappella format? The most bothersome part of it is when the soloist tries to imitate Tori's agonized cries at the end of each chorus...it makes me nauseous just thinking about it. On the other hand, there are some really good a cappella covers of ecto stuff...here at Yale a group called "Something Extra" does a killer rendition of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" and another all-female group called "The New Blue" does a very powerful interpretation of Suzanne Vega's "Small Blue Thing". I also really like Boston U. Guaranteed, one of these days not too far down the line you'll impress friends at dinner parties by saying you saw her play in a place the size of the Yale Women's Center. With Erin, the whole is definitely more than the sum of the parts. She's a really good musician (plays guitar and banjo, among other things), and a very clever songwriter. Not much of a voice, but it doesn't matter. Her music goes from swing to country to jazz to rock and back again, sometimes in the course of one song. She's also a very engaging performer. She's just so damned cute, you can't help but like her -- but the music will be enough to get you there on its own. I'm having a bit of trouble accessing the site right now, but I'm pretty sure there are sound samples at www.erinmckeown.com. There is also a page for her at mp3.com, with a few older tracks on it. Her new album, _Distillation_ is going to be in my top 5 of the year. (It was produced by Dave Chalfant of The Nields.) I'll look for you at both shows ... if you're not there, I'll expect an essay in my e-mailbox the next morning explaining just why you blew off two incredible performances that are actually going to happen in New Haven. ;) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 22:53:02 -0400 From: "kleinpc" Subject: After Forever Have any of you ever heard of a band from I believe Holland called After Forever? I'm a new fan but have been amazed at how good the female vox are. The lady in the band is definitely opera trained. The band also has a grindcore type male "grunter" for a singer. There style has been called beauty and the beast for obvious reasons. Really they are progressive goth metal. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 20:58:19 -0700 From: Billi Mazur Subject: Re: new CD's coming my way......
