San Jose airport is too far for a cab, about $100 to Santa Cruz. If you must use a cab, try and negotiate a price beforehand, don't use the meter. Out here, limos sometimes are more economical for groups of 4 or more. ( I hate 'em personally, but whatever saves us money!) There is a South Bay Shuttle that runs to Santa Cruz for, I believe about $20. Better to have a car; San Jose is not very much different from Lost Angeles these days - very difficult to get around without help from the great god Ka. ( Ka is a busy god too!) But here's the good news: There are limited ways ( about 3) to get get to both Santa Cruz and Boulder Creek, and just about everyone who attends will have to use these routes, so it should not be too hard to find a ride. Drive time from SJ airport to Santa Cruz is about 40 minutes providing no cheesewits have caused an accident. Boulder Creek is about the same. I work in San Jose, pretty close to SJO, so I could offer a ride to anyone coming in around 6pm on Friday. ( First emailed, first served basis) I will poll my friends for other options. Regarding accomodations, there is a beautiful redwood grove on the property at the house concert, people would be most welcome to camp in there; it's wonderful in summer to wake up amongst these glorious 150' tall weeds. The grove will hold about 6 tents, and we can donate one which will sleep four people providing they know each other quite well! You could have a really "in tents" time( groan), but if you stay, you'll have to put up with my really bad puns. ( remember "Many Bjorns Are Whirled Tonight" ?) There is also a very nice lodge about ten minutes away; www.brookdalelodge.com I checked on prices and found that they can do a room with 2 queens for 89 per night. The lodge is very nice, has a restaurant with a spring running through it, and a resident ghost, and some theme rooms, including Marilyn Monroe. There are other lodges in the area which would likely be less expensive. I'll get more info soon. Bottom line, if you're intending to come and you have concerns regarding accomodations or transport, get in touch with me offline, and we'll figure stuff out. It seems to me that people really do understand. The worst attendance I've had was 6 of us for Marlee MacLeod and her band. But they played the night before at a bar, and while there were more people in the bar, there were only 3 of us who were listening to them play. And Marlee said that there options were to play my show, or sit in a hotel room and watch tv. So even if it's just a few of us, she'd rather come hang out, sing some songs, drink some beers and chat. While this could be a front, she eventually wrote nice things about the event on her web page, and then actively pursued doing more house concerts, so it seems sincere. neal np: The Match - Laurianne Fiorentino ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 21:48:28 -0700 From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: Jessie Turner at the House O'Muzak At 7:46 PM -0400 10/23/00, meredith wrote: >How did you get the newspaper coverage? I did that for Cindy Lee, and they wrote a nice article. Amusingly, they never asked me for anything, and just used the press pack Cindy Lee sent combined with the e-mail announcement I had sent out. I called the daily and spoke with the music and arts editor, and she totally brushed me off. Said there were so many house concerts they couldn't be bothered with them. (I wish they could, cause I don't know of ANY others.) In fact, I just learned of a monthly series in Santa Fe that is pretty big and elaborate, and that guy told me I was the only other house concerts in the state he knew of (and he just learned of me). Amy X does play a wildly entertaining cabaret show. When I saw it with Sue Trowbridge several years ago at Venue 9 in SF, it didn't seem to take up that much room. I'm still not sure what is driving the artist restrictions that have been mentioned here. It seems like there would be enough room on a modest stage for Amy and the Men. Then again, if it's a problem with actually paying people, or changing over the equipment, then maybe these are issues. However, Amy's really nice and very responsive to e-mail, so if there is interest, we could always ask her about it. neal np: The Match - Laurianne Fiorentino ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 22:39:56 -0700 From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: EctofestWest performers - need help At 1:56 PM -0700 10/23/00, Shelly DeForte wrote: >I have no familiarity with the following artists: >Alison Faith Levy Alison was in the Loud Family and plays keyboards. I have her e-mail address too, and she likes to play in interesting places. She also plays on Mary Lydia Ryan's last album, and has been known to play live with her, which could be a fun thing for a concert. I know all the above except Alison (and I bet Sue knows her). There have been many on and off line discussions about Ectofest West. We hope that we're not dominating the scene right now on the list. All of the input that we have received has been fabulous and greatly appreciated! Many good ideas have been presented to us. We (Shelly, Phil & I, along with other potential volunteers) will be compiling and examining all of these good suggestions over the next several weeks or so. We plan to present comprehensive and definitive infomation available to everyone about: 1) The Artists 2) Transportation options (both long distance and local) 3) Lodging options 4) Lot's of other things (some we probably haven't thought of yet) We are still in the very early stages of putting this together. We really wanted to start the planning early so that everything will hopefully go smoothly. We want to have a fun and memorable event for our fellow Ectophiles. This spirit is embodied in the current Ectofest events that Chuck and Meth have put on so successfully. In reading the archives, it seems that there have been many wonderful Ecto events since the beginning of the list. Fellow Ectophiles such as Vickie, Neile, Neal, Neil, and many others have hosted Ecto gatherings large and small. We hope to live up to the wonderful tradition that has been established by our fellow Ectophiles. Thanks, Bill M. n.p.
