Hmmm... there might be something to it. I really like the sound of cello, and it's true my needs in this respect seem to be satisfied largely by the locals. Yet another Aussie band with prominent cello is Naked Raven - beautiful acoustic music. And there used to be Peccadillo.... BTW, two of its members, Lara (who sings and plays violin) and Peter (cello) are now in Fourplay: a string quarter with a difference, since they specialise in doing pop/rock covers. They did Led Zep and Metallica among others... when they started out I thought they were good and cute and all that, but they were still basically just a cover band and I couldn't get too excited about them. But with their second CD they started to slip in a few of their own compositions and make more use of Lara's beautiful voice, so who knows? Something good might come out of this yet. And one non-Australian I want to mention is Nadia Lanman, whose cello contributed so much to Heather Nova's songs over the years (although I notice Nadia is only credited on 3 tracks on my favourite HN record, "Blow") - ------------------------------------------------------ "The Optimist proclaims we live in the best of all possible worlds. I know there are a few of you on this list as well. If you are a musician (or just think like one), I'd really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to fill it out, or forward it to any independent musicians you know (with a header saying why you're forwarding it). Thanks, Jeff Hanson - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------------------------- Hi, My name is Jeff Hanson and I'm a graduate student at University of Phoenix, at the Albuquerque, New Mexico campus, working on my Masters in Technology Management. I am most likely contacting you because I'm a fan of yours and a big supporter of independent music. For my final project at school I'm working on a business plan for a web-based resource for Independent Musicians. This resource would be a place where artists could share information about everything in the music industry--advice on musical equipment, recording techniques, recording studios, booking agents, booking locations, house concerts, etc. It would also be a place for music fans to discover new artists, as each member artist would have a homepage with complete artist info and links to their own websites, or other sites of the artist's choosing. If you could take a few minutes to fill out the survey I'd greatly appreciate it. Doing so will not only help me complete my final project, but may influence the shape of a new business, devoted to helping artists like yourself. If you know of anyone else who you think would provide feedback, feel free to forward this survey to them. I'm interested inall feedback, but need responses by November 1, 2000 for the information to be included in my final project. E-mail responses to jjhanson@att.net. Thank you so much for your time. I thought I'd unlurk for a bit to plug some of my = favorite stuff right now. Some of the records I will capsully review are = not necessarilly "ecto" in the "classic sense" (whatever that is) ,but I = still want to recommend to those intrepid and not-so-intrepid ecto = listeners out there. 1. Juliana Hatfield, "Beautiful Creature" . Indeed, Juliana is pretty = easy on the eyes, but she is even better on the ears. This ( along with = her "Juliana's Pony: Total System Failure" are her two latest records = from early summer this year). Beautiful Creature is a record where = Juliana's song writing style completely matures, her voice is clear and = sweet. My favorite songs are "Danial" an angry rocker that opens the = record, "Choose Drugs" - which is one of the saddest anti-drug abuse = songs I've ever heard ( and I'm not big on anything that's anti-drugs ), = and "Might be in Love" - a sweet love song - you really want to believe = she 's singing it to you. This is a relatively mellow record compared to = her forays into hard rock. Much of it is acoustic guitar with bass and = drums. Mary Lou Lord-esque. 2. Emmy Lou Harris, Red Dirt Girl . Taking off from Wrecking Ball - if = you liked Wrecking Ball you need this album. Emmy Lou is the best thing = Nashville has to offer and Nashville don't even know it. This record is = constantly spinning on my CD-player . Every song is a highlight. "I = Don't Want to Talk About It " the obvious single ,but all songs are = memorable. 3. The Lemonheads, "It's a Shame About Ray" - Evan Dando - the guy = Juliana is probably singing about in "Choose Drugs" - is/was the genius = behind this totally underated band. Highlights for me: "It's a Shame = About Ray", "Rudderless" and a totally awesome cover of "Mrs. Robinson" = .=20 4. Bevis Frond , "The Bevis Frond: Live" . Recorded at The Great = American Music Hall in San Francisco, Nick Saloman is the lead guitarist = and songwriter for this fairly obscure band. He is firmly rooted in the = Hendrix/Gilmour/Young (Neil not Angus) school of guitar feedback. Also , = sometime collaborator with Mary Lou Lord ("Lights are Changing") . This = record is especially entertaining for the between song banter that = almost gets annoying ,but is still hillarious at the same time. Saloman = really plays guitar like Jimi closer to anyone else alive. 5. Cowboy Junkies, "Miles From Our Home" . What can I say, I just = couldn't stop playing the title song - over and over I played it for a = week or more while driving to work. All the songs are great. In a just = world the Cowboy Junkies would have a number one record. It's probably = that "Parental Advisory Sticker" - Thanks Tipper ! Really the best lyric = in on the record is from "Someone Out There" where Margot Timmons asks: = "But what I want to know before I let you go is who gave this power to = that fucker up there ?" 6. Meat Puppets "Golden Lies" . A healthy portion of meat to be sure. = This troubled band weighs in with a record that alternates between heavy = metal riffage to country-fied Byrds-esque psychedelia. Sometimes I hear = some David Gilmour-ish sounding guitar squalls. Irreverent songs about = monsters, blown minds, and sad dashed dreams. Please get it. I want this = band to succeed ! 7. Continental Drifters, Vermilion .Probably the most obscure band of = this lot, it's made up of former Dream Syndicate members, R.E.M. sideman = and dBs founder, Peter Holsapple, his wife, Susan Cowsil ( remember the = Cowsils from the 60s ), Victoria Peterson of the Bangles. Each member of = the Continental Drifters has more talent in their respective pinkies = than most Billboard top tenners have in their entire careers . = Vermilion is filled with rockers and ballads. Favorites for me are = opener "Rain" and the song that gets me verclempt "Daddy Just Want's it = to Rain" . This band could be described as being a combo of The Band, = The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, and Neil Young ( with or without CSN) . = If you like any of those artists you need this record ! 8. Sky Cries Mary, "Moon Bathing on Sleeping Leaves" - just getting into = this band despite the fact that I'm a Seattle dude and this band has = been a Seattle fixture for quite some time. Unfortunately they just = broke up last year. This record I think is their last one and it's great = . Title song "Moonbathing " is infectious pop song with a psychedelic = feel. They have been compared to Pink Floyd and the comparison is fair = ,but they are much more as well. I'll happily listen to lead singer = Anisa Romero over Alanis Morissette any day . 9. Victoria Williams, "Water to Drink" . Victoria rocks ! Any woman who = strapps on an electric guitar and can subsequently rock the way she does = gets my vote . This record is instantly listenable and is the best thing = she's put out since "Loose" . She uses wha-wha too ! Okay thanks for indulging me. Speaking of intrepid, you should have just = seen me. I wasn't sure of the spelling of intrepid and so I picked up my = dictionary and cracked it open only to be greeted by a HUGE black/brown = spider . That dictionary flew and luckilly it was the dictionary that I = hurled across the room and not my laptop ! I screamed and then laughed. = Spiders of course are good for this planet, but unfortunately for our = anti-hero, he didn't live to creep another day. Spiders inside the = envions of my house live only when unseen by me.=20 until my next review, Russ=20 P.S. - now I'm truly ecto as I picked up Happy Rhodes's "Many Worlds Are = Born Tonight" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2000 15:48:45 -0400 From: Loretta Pontillo Subject: might be moving to London... OK, now it’s time to pick the artists – and I need everybody’s help on this one! Qualifications: Needs to be located on the west coast. We cannot accommodate full bands with this show. We need artists who are comfortable doing a more stripped down ‘acoustic’ set with a max of 2 accompanying musicians. This will be a show of female and female fronted acts. We need artists who usually play to small crowds and are likely to feel that this is a beneficial opportunity for them. There is currently an agreement from Happy Rhodes and Mary Lydia Ryan to perform. Emily Bezar is interested though there are scheduling conflicts. She will be a later addition if possible. We have also contacted Cyoakha and would like for her to perform if possible. There are between one and three spots available for the evening show (sets will be around 30 minutes - except for Happy of course!). As I mentioned, there may be an outdoor house concert earlier in the day. For that show, I’d like suggestions for smaller acoustic acts. Here are the artists that have been mentioned so far I have some familiarity with the following artists: Emily Bezar (San Francisco) Cyoakha – (San Francisco) Veda Hille (Vancouver) Amy X Neuburg and Men (San Francisco) Jill Tracy (San Francisco) Cindy Lee Berryhill (San Diego) I have no familiarity with the following artists: Alison Faith Levy Joy Eden Harrison (San Diego) Hand to Mouth Persephone Circle people Amy Denio Jill Knight It would be great to get info on the artists I'm not familiar with. If there are any other artists you would like to see, please let me know so I can add them to my list. Additionally, please give me a list of your favorites to perform (in order) and indicate whether they would be more appropriate for the indoor (200 capacity) show, or the outdoor (30 + capacity) house concert. If you can help with booking an artist/s, please let me know. Thank you all so much for your support! I wonder if Ingrid Karklins would be willing and able to come to Santa Cruz? That's "Beans in My Ears", as recorded by Pete Seeger on, if memory serves, his "Dangerous Songs" album. I vaguely recall his having written it, but a web search finds an attribution to one Len Chandler. It may also appear in Seeger's book "The Incomplete Folksinger" (which included, in some context I forget, but with translation into normal English, the funniest sentence I had ever seen: "Sesquipedalian terminology obfuscates the rumination" (I may be wrong about "terminology")). There's a set of lyrics at http://www.summer.com.br/~pfilho/html/lyrics/b/beans_in_my_ears.txt but it omits the verse I remember about LBJ (which, yes, severely dates me). It would be just too cool for words if Australia was represented on EctoWest. I don't think many local artists could travel for this one gig, but there are a couple who are based in LA: Max Sharam is one, the other is called Gili Moon. Heck, you could even try to get Splendid - also from LA. Fairly high profile with their contributions to Buffy, but also known to play for a couple of dozen of people in the audience... - ------------------------------------------------------ "The Optimist proclaims we live in the best of all possible worlds. She'll be doing a few dates in November. Sat Nov 4. TBC (arlington Virgina) Sun Nov 5 Boston, The Paradise Wed Nov 8 New York, Bottom Line Thurs Nov 9 Northampton Iron Horse Friday No 10 TBC (vandyke) Saturday Nov 11 Chicago House Of Blues (opening act for Jerry Jeff Walker) I'll probably be at the Paradise show. She isn't the most riveting artist, but she does have some fair pop tunes (and I keep comparing her album from 1998 to Dido's, although Dido's is better). Plus, she's a very sweet person. I really enjoy her music. I believe that she is on the list as a definite possibility. When Susan plays live it's generally just her singing and playing on an electric keyboard, correct? If that's the case, she would be a great possibility for the house concert. The evening Kuumbwa line-up appears to be taking shape fairly rapidly. Neile, I believe that you know Susan fairly well. Do you think that she would be willing to come down from Seattle for this event? Thanks, Bill M.
