I *think* someone on the list mentioned Karla Manzur. Regardless, I visited her area on mp3.com and listened to the three songs there. Based on those three songs I decided to purchase from her direct her "ep", _Cruel and Unusual_. I am so glad I did, but wish there were more. You get two more songs that aren't on mp3.com, and personally I think those two are the best. Maybe that's why she put the songs on mp3.com she did. :-) Anyway, I highly recommend Karla Manzur. While it is "her and her guitar", there is a difference. If memory serves, she's a classically-trained guitarist, and has kept the nylon strings. It makes her music that much more different, so woj just may like her. ;-) Since I'm terrible at comparisons, all I can say is visit her site http://www.karlamanzur.com/ which will take you to her mp3.com section, and try out the songs. You'll be happy you did. Matt Bittner __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! When I arrived and saw no ecto contingent, I realized that it was quite possible I hadn't heard about this on ecto, but by consulting the Kaitlyn ni Donovan site (). So, before I go on, please note that she will also be playing Saturday at noon in New York City: 10.21.00 Saturday - CMJ New York: Exhibition Stage, Hilton Hotel, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, Gramercy Suite A, Second Floor, noon. This evening she was playing at Rising Cafe in Brooklyn. Her set wasn't particularly well attended, and a lot of those in the audience seemed to have been other Hush Records artists or personnel in from Oregon for the evening. More regrettable was how attendance increased for the following act, a boy with a guitar styling himself "Kind of Like Spitting." Hush Records' site says he "wears his heart on his sleeve," but then, so did the boyfriend in the movie *Heavy,* whom he called to mind. Anyway, Kaitlyn ni Donovan. I had only been familiar with "Ceiling Tiles" from the mp3 available on the Hush Records site (). The first time I heard it I wasn't certain how much I liked it, but by the time it started coming to me in my dreams I decided I had to catch this show. Kaitlyn had her band with her from Portland--lead guitar, bass, and drums. Most of the time she also played acoustic guitar; "Ceiling Tiles" was one of two songs she performed while accompanying herself on violin. The music was languid and somehow put me in mind of Cocteau Twins, although I'm not sure why--none of the instrumental work was anything like Cocteau Twins, there were real lyrics, and Kaitlyn's voice is not as hard-edged as Liz Frazer's. Something about the dreaminess put it in the same universe for me anyway. Rising doesn't have the best sound system, and several times I got the impression that the music wasn't hanging together as well as it could have either because the bass was too high in the mix, or because the instruments weren't quite in tune. (On one song in particular the bass sounded distinctly out of tune--so much so that I was trying to figure out whether it was on purpose or not. I concluded that getting that precise degree of dissonance on purpose would have required a lot more preparation before the song than they did, and besides, it just sounded bad.) But the show was good enough for me to get me to buy the album, even though I had already snagged a promo EP for free. (More on this after I've heard them.) For people in the New York area, I'd recommend catching the show Saturday. Cheers, Paul ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2000 21:16:00 -0700 From: Steve VanDevender Subject: indiegrrl tour on west coast I just saw a poster for an "Indiegrrl" tour, which is coming to Eugene at the University of Oregon this Saturday and lists a bunch of other west coast locations (Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, etc.). The main reason my eyes perked up was that Anne Heaton is prominently featured. I may have to juggle my plans for Saturday a bit, but I'm definitely going to try to be there. I was also pleased to see that Susan McKeown will be coming to Eugene -- but not entirely pleased to see that it was the evening before Thanksgiving. That may also involve juggling some plans. I've also volunteered to take on the Ectoguide page for Ben Folds Five. I have some of Neile's collected comments on them from past postings to Ecto, but if anyone would like to submit their own for inclusion in the guide page, please feel free to email them to me. I'll happily take both negative and positive comments, especially if they're thoughtful and substantive (i.e. "I saw them, and I (dis)liked them because ..." as opposed to just "They rock/suck."). In particular, if fans have comments on particular albums, that would really help fill out the guide entry. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #311 **************************
