She's one of my favs. Also, I was suprised not to see the band Iona in the list at the main ecto page. They are a progressive irish rock band with an amazing singer named Joanne Hogg. They are one of the best bands I've ever heard. A great couple songs by them are Encircling and Bi-Se I Mo Shul - part 2. Bi-Se is sung in gaelic I believe and is inspired by a poem called Be Thou My Vision. I was also suprised to not see David Sylvian in the ecto list as he deserves to be on there with Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 08:38:17 +1100 From: Andrew Fries Subject: Wendy Rule at the Harp I have to confess I don't really enjoy flying all that much. But there is this one moment I never get tired of, and it almost makes up for the whole ordeal: when the plane lines up on the runway, and the engines come to life and I hear this roar, feel all this incredible power propelling me onwards... ah, this is magic. Well, listening to Wendy Rule comes pretty close to this. Her voice builds up from mere whisper to filling up the whole room, yet remaining so smooth and rich, so effortless, seemingly still nowhere near the limit... and it sweeps me away to strange and wonderful places. The full power of her voice just has to be experienced live - CDs might provide glimpses but they don't come close to capturing the real deal. Besides, Wendy in full flight is a sight to behold. She has powerful, dramatic presence on stage. Of course she does, she's a Scorpio just like Crista Calero, my personal goddess! Talking astrology is quite appropriate here. Wendy takes pride in her Wiccan beliefs, they are at the core of her music, and they are a large part of the performance which has a feeling of the ritual about it. I have seen her four times now, and each time she opens and closes the show with an incantation. In between she often reaches for mythical themes (Prometheus, Artemis, Psyche's Sisters...) or unusual subjects (Entropy - "it's about the nature of chaos") But to her credit she manages it all with warmth and grace and good humour. "This is now a sacred space and anything is possible here ... you never know, I might turn into a chicken". She didn't, but it was an excellent night all the same. This was the launch of her new CD, "World Between Worlds", so the new songs were prominent. "New" turned out to be a relative term though - I recognised most of them from her other performances, so I guess she's been playing them for a while already before making this record. This is her third studio effort, and this time it's credited to "Wendy Rule and The Parallel Dream". That would be her band - Rachel Samuel on cello, Craig Patterson on piano and Simon Dickson on drums. Rachel and Craig at least appear on all her records, and I think this stability really helps. As for the CD itself, perhaps it doesn't break any new ground for her, but I think that's just as well. Instead, it is another snapshot of her doing what she does, in her own style and on her own terms. I wouldn't ask for anything else. We were treated to some of the older songs as well: "Bliss", and "Deity", and naturally "Zero" was the last number. This also seems a part of the ritual, indeed by now I'd feel cheated out of something very important if her gig ended any other way! All in all, a wonderful night. And she said she'll be back in December - my God, that's pretty close already! PS Neal - I've got the CD for you. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as "Zero"... np. "World Between Worlds", naturally! - ------------------------------------------------------ "The Optimist proclaims we live in the best of all possible worlds. Now and again something surfaces that is worth mentioning to Ecto, 'cause otherwise they/ya'll/you'uns might miss it. I came across the new (2000) release by Annette Peacock, "an acrobat's heart," almost by accident. I scan the bins for her because she's so hard to find. Lo, and, behold. A new one. Unlike her earlier work, which is edgy in the extremis, this is very minimalist, her piano and vocals backed by a string quartet. It is at the same time very New York feeling with a strong Rachel's vibe. I'm put in mind of Annie Lennox' better work. Enjoy, Peter C ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Oct 2000 19:15:15 -0700 From: "phclark" Subject: Re: Surprise! surprise! Tough one. Technically, avant. Her older stuff is kinda out there. Touch of dissonance a la Siberry, writes her own stuff, I'd call it edgy jazz, very introspective (but not at first blush). And, no, no and no. And, real obscure, at least here. If memory serves she is married to Gary Peacock, who is a medium sized jazz noise, and has ties to Marilyn Crispell, another medium noise, who has interpreted Annette's work. I think only her first, "X-Dreams" (1979-ish) was released in this country. There are another five or so cds currently available on European (Dutch) labels with prices to match. Take a look on GEMM. I'm looking for the vinyl, actually. But that's why I look at the used bins in hope. I'm not in the habit of taking $40 chances. I'd still recommend "acrobat's heart." I got it new and sealed for $13 (US production.) Hard to go wrong. Late night cognac stuff.
