Not Ectophilic, maybe, but good. One of my very favorite bands. Höyry-Kone plays a really eclectic and experimental kick-ass blend of edgy prog-ish rock, which my words fail to describe. There's definitely classical music in it, some folk, touches of eletronica here and there. Unexpected rhythms and rhythm changes. A lot of variation, which (unlike some bands who try it) these guys are definitely proficient and inventive enough to keep both coherent and interesting. And unique. You may hear Frippian guitar in this song, or the craziness of Magma in that one, but I'm not aware of any other music in existence which would really resemble this band's. You can find reviews for their two albums at: http://www.progreviews.com/reviews/hk-hvr.html and http://www.progreviews.com/reviews/hk-hp.html I very highly recommend them to anyone with a liking for odd rock music. And you won't need to be a prog-rock afficionado to like them (I'm not). It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but you should hear something unique, at the very least. Höyry-Kone will be supported by a side project of several members of the band, Alamaailman vasarat (= "Hammers of the Underworld", so named because the band started out playing in the Helsinki subway). They play wild Middle-Eastern and Asian-influenced acoustic instrumental rock music with trombone, soprano sax, cello, pump organ and drums. Not _quite_ as ambitious or amazing as Höyry-Kone, but still highly original and cool. Juha n.p. So far they haven't gotten to "Nada Brahma," the album I'm missing. Does anyone know if the rerelease plans are still on? Is it going to be this year, or will this spill over into 2001? (it still is so weird to say that) I saw these Laura Nyro re-releases today, "Time and Love: The Essential Masters" next Tuesday, "Live From Mountain Stage" any comments? And already out: Indigo Girls Indigo Girls, Nomads Indians Saints, Rites of Passage and Strange Fire (all expanded editions w/bonus tracks; ) Does anyone have these? Are the bonus tracks worth it? I'm really only interested in "Indigo Girls" and "Rites of Passage." I never cared for the other 2 albums. and "Retrospective" (new compilation w/two brand new tracks) I've seen this in stores already and will probably pick it up sometime, well, definitely will, but I'm trying to be good and budget (it's not going very well) Thanks! Marty ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 20:17:12 -0500 From: tenthvictim@mindspring.com Subject: Sara Hickman Revisited I thought I should clarify, and I'm bored so you have to suffer with me. I wondered if I would get called on the following: "I suppose Sarah isn't ecto-- too outgoing, too positive--" Yeah, I got called on it. What I should have written was: "Sara (yes, I misspelled her name) is not listed in the ecto database and therefore may not be considered ecto." To me, ecto is Happy Rhodes, Jane Siberry, Kate Bush, and Innocence Mission, plus others I can't think of right now. Ms. Hickman doesn't seem to fit in with these other women. Though some of Jane Siberry's songs ("Everything Reminds Me of My Dog," for example) could easily be sung by Sara, and Jane could probably sing Sara songs. But my knowledge of ecto-like singers is limited, mostly by the complete lack of anything resembling good radio in Dallas/Ft. Worth. Here is a limited, slapdash discography for Sara: Equal Scary People; Shortstop; Sara Hickman; Necessary Angels; Misfits; Two Kinds of Laughter; Spiritual Appliances. I am going to hunt some of these down and purchase them. Ms. Hickman had attended the University of North Texas in the late 80's, so as she performed in the Lyceum she told stories of her days in Denton. She mentioned the "footish" who struck the UNT library and managed to lick/suck thirty women's (sixty?) feet before getting caught. She thought there might have been an element of shame involved considering the women's shoes and socks had to be removed for the guy to do his thing. I was working at the library at the time, but my movements are accounted for. Another meandering, not necessarily funny note: I read in the paper an account of a local musician having Sara over for dinner and counseling her as she tried to choose between art and music. He happily reported that he talked her into sticking with music. A woman I worked with in the library had a similar tale of feeding Sara and giving her a little pep talk about keeping the music going. I think I detect a pattern here. If you musicians on this list are feeling a little hungry, just tell your friends you're a bit down and are in need of counseling. They will invite you to dinner and try to talk you into continuing with music. Free dinner. No more mention of Sara for months, I promise. Andrew picked up her second CD (Deity) for me last year, and I enjoyed it pretty well. It didn't wow me, but I rather liked her voice and some of the songs slowly got under my skin. Enough so that I had her first album (Zero) on my list of interesting music for people to get me from Australia. Zero has been in my changer for the last week or so, and I adore it. I like it lots more than Deity. The music on Deity was kind of sparse and pretty direct, but Zero is all over the place. Lush arrangements, more dramatic singing.
