Hopefully the seeds have been sown for a WestFest somewhere down the line. I sense that the nebulous dream may actually come to fruition. I agree with Cy that there are so many wonderful, caring, giving, and talented people in the greater Ecto community. I'm sure that there will continue to be a proliferation of Ecto gatherings both grand and intimate as there have been since the genesis of the list. There have been many such gatherings already with the two Ectofests and home concerts being recent examples. Ecto really is quite an amazing community! I just read the *one* interesting post on this topic - from someone who is obviously quite younger than me ,but from someone quite astute and ernest. I am amazed that a young person would care at all about this years election - the young people of this country really are the disenfranchised ones - no politician cares about what they care about. The only real presidential administration I've ever known has been this one. I have learned, through independant study, that under Reagan, taxes were lowered and buisnesses were able to flourish and our national security was never more assured." I don't vote, as I am not a citizen, but when the run off between Clinton and Bush Sr. came about it kind of looked like this to me: Would I vote for a man who was in an elite secret society at Yale, ( Skull and Bones, there's a really sordid and nasty story concerning Bush's grandfather and this society); a man who had been the director of the CIA, one of the most repressive and amoral organizations since the Third Reich, an organization which made the Borgias look like a convention of nuns by comparison; a man who kept the Feds away from his sons while one (Jeb) was enthusiastically assisting in the looting of a few savings and loans, and the other (Dubya) was engaging in seriously questionable insider stock trading. Or would I vote for a man who smoked pot (without inhaling) and played the saxophone? OK, this is a little simplistic, I'll admit, but one has to take prior history into account: If you're all for George Junior, you owe it to yourself to take a look at the reign and legacy of his father, and wonder who would really be running the show. I believe George Bush Sr. to be just another morally bankrupt crook who got to be president using whatever means at his disposal. I really haven't seen much evidence that has convinced me that his sons are any different. Try looking up some back issues of Mother Jones on the Web. Ultimately I prefer the Platonic philosphy; whomever runs the show should be someone who really doesn't want the job. I think anyone has to be more than a little crazy to WANT to be president, and crazy people shouldn't be allowed to run a country. In fact, "Scatterheart" sounds like an outtake from that album. I think the contrast is more subtle on _Selmasongs_, though, which to me is a good thing since I found _Homogenic_ sort of off-putting at times. "I've Seen It All," the duet with Thom Yorke, is great. But I think my two favorites right now are "107 Steps" and "New World," both of which combine the sound of traditional musicals with Bjork's unique melodies in a way that's slightly less showy than a song like "In the Musicals." Overall, I'm surprised how much I like _Selmasongs_. I was a bit dubious, but it's a solid Bjork album (or maybe EP since there are only 7 songs, one of which is an instrumental). Plus, it's worth picking up for the sheer oddity of a duet between Bjork and Catherine Deneuve. I would never have dreamed of *that* pairing. Yep, Selmasongs is lovely. It's interesting, I mean. The lyrics fall fairly flat, but it *is* a musical, soooo.... Much like Radiohead's new Kid A, the album has a lot of interesting electronic texture. It's a bit like if you were to smoosh Homogenic and It's Oh So Quiet into an iron lung and then listen to what pops out the other end. Very pretty. It's also only a very short 7 songs, though. But what does that matter when they're very good? I should mention that the overture is predominantly brass, with some timpani, and is very characteristic of Bjork's brass scoring. It sounds a lot like Arvo Part or Philip Glass, but, unlike the latter, it doesn't make me want to jump out a window. It's very cyclical, very delicate, very lovely. The entire score itself is also cyclical, with motives and I think the key signature, too, of "New World" blending directly into the opening of "Overture." The Village Voice has a VERY scathing review out of the movie. Bjork is also on the cover of Time Out New York ( renamed New "Bjork" for the week ) in a lovely shoot, inexplicably balancing a crayon between her fingertips. Have you listened? What did you think? - - Katherine ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2000 20:25:56 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Longest note held by a male pop/rock singer? Hi peeps :-) Sorry for the long intro to a question, but I just gotta. Today I stumbled upon a disc in a cutout bin I could not resist, especially since I had been planning on buying it off and on for oh what, a couple of years now. It was Jefferson Starship's Red Octopus CD and to top it off it was a 24k gold Ultra disc. ($5.99!) Anyway, I hopped in the Explorer (death tires long gone) and popped the CD in. Couldn't wait for "Miracles". The album version (nearly 7 minutes long) of the song astonished me and when it was in the top 40 and beyond I used to play it regularly on my shows at my college station (WCVM SUNY Morrisville NY, in case we have any other Mo-ville grads here....any?). In my humble opinion, Marty Balin's performance on this tune is pop music Hall Of Fame material, especially so about 5:44 into the song when he pulls off a "double long note" when he sings three consecutive "so would I" 's, the last two he holds "I" for 8 seconds, then less than a second later holds it again for a shade over 11 seconds. If you have the album or CD, pull it out and give it a listen again. Now, while songs with female artists doing that are probably a dime a dozen (Jewel holding "your" in Who Will Save Your Soul for *18+* seconds *LIVE* on Letterman (or was it Leno?) blew me away), Balins' performance right there with "so would I" is astonishing. Although my middle-aged brain cannot recall any pop/rock male singer doing anything close to that (an 11 second hold, right after an 8 second one or not), I am sure there has to be some song or recorded live performance out there that fits the bill. So I am throwing this thread question out to you all. Name a MALE performance that astonished you with a note he held, and if you have a recording of it, how long does he hold it? (Pop or rock only, as I am sure there's more than a few in the opera genre). Mike P.S. I am also jazzed that, being an oldies fan, the Raspberries "Go All The Way" has FINALLY been used in a released films' soundtrack (Almost Famous) and featured on the trailer that is now showing on TV. The opening of that song used to get me so pumped and in a zone while playing hoops behind the Jr high school that it got to the point that the other team would go into a stall when they got the ball or "oops, the ball rolled down the hill" just so they could keep the ball out of my hands. Can't wait to see the film, guess it's getting great reviews :-) np: Jeff Starship - Red Octopus np: Sweetwater - Cycles ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Sep 2000 21:02:06 -0400 From: Philip David Morgan Subject: Re: The Galerkin Method Hello, Neile: > A couple of people have asked me about The Galerkin Method disc.... > [It's a] really wonderful, strange eclectic mix of worldish/rock/experimental > sounds that comes out feeling whole and delightful...Hard to describe what > it sounds like--Land of the Blind with dulcimer?
