I’ve set up a message board at www.cybermagician.net/wwwboard. Come one, come all and give your opinions about location, venues, dates and artists. If I can get enough help for a San Francisco bay area fest, I’m willing to coordinate and make this happen! But let’s start by seeing where the concentrations of people are, where the help is, and where the venues are. Then we’ll go from there. Thanks all! October 24 PJ Harvey--Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea (Island) THREE 'EDGY' NEW ALBUMS will soon emerge to mark the summer's end. Hot on the tiny heels of her newborn son Rocco, Madonna's eighth album of new material, Music, arrives from Warner Bros. on September 19. Recorded in London, its main musical thrust is the limelight thrown on co-producer Mirwais Ahmadzai, the French house/dance pioneer, who co-wrote six of the album's 10 tracks and now inherits the co-producing mantle worn by William Orbit. Meanwhile, another female but lesser-known icon, Polly Jean Harvey, has her new, sixth album "Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea" arriving October 24 on Island Records, bringing her career full circle: The new songs find her playing guitar again, echoing the punk edges of her celebrated early albums Dry and Rid of Me but also recalling the moody, wistful flair of her more recent work. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. 'goodnight moon' is the stand out track for me, others being 'lunch' and #2, i'm blanking on the name and i don't have the cd in front of me. it's actually one of the first cds i've bought all year that really stuck with me. (been kind of a pathetic year thus far...) shannonwright 'maps...' mood music. her voice is incredible and when she starts wailing... man. thanks to whoever recommended her on this list. it's a good cd, but i don't foresee myself listening to it frequently. it's not something you can just throw on whenever. ben christophers 'beautiful demon' again, thank you to whoever recommended him. at first listening i wasn't that impressed, but it has been growing on me ever since. i like the mixture of folky with electronic, his voice lends very well to it. it reminds me of a less experimental trashmonk, and a slight resemblance to a mellow jeff buckley. [speaking of jeff buckley... if anyone has a chance to go to the fan gatherings his mother put together, i recommend it. the programs they show are excellent, and mary talks a lot about the future releasing of jeff's recordings. it was a very nice experience, or at least the austin one was. depressing, but good to be around his fans, talk to his mother, watch the concert footage and the documentary.] a new shipment of cds just came in (including apollo 440 [i'm so addicted to them... this is delicious stuff, but i feel silly for taking so long to buy the album], ute lemper, veda hille's women in (e)motion and tracy bonham) so i'll be reporting on those later. i should be saving my money for when a whole load of albums all come out (radiohead, pj harvey, bjork, u2, twilight singers), but i can live with debt. and on a warm and fuzzy note, i'm so indebted to this mailing list for pointing out some amazing music to me. a lot of my current addictions (jonatha brooke, david usher) i heard of through this list. okay, that's enough. j ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2000 21:04:59 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: A west coast ectofest - for real Hi! The last I heard, the only place to buy this CD was out of a cardboard box in the back of Sarah's car, so it's great to see her getting national exposure south of the Canadian border! Not only that, but it's a steal at $7.99 this week at http://www.towerrecords.com/product.asp?pfid=1898800 If you don't have it yet, this is a great time to scoop one up - it's sure to end up being a favorite on a lot of people's year-end lists here. But we have plenty of local talent to make it worthwhile. - --Neile At 9:30 PM -0700 9/7/00, Shelly DeForte wrote: >Hmmm, maybe an ectofest west tour? Apparently, Zoe Records (the rock imprint of Rounder Records that has released stuff by Juliana Hatfield and I think the Nields) picked up her record and just released it (or rereleased, depending on how you look at it) this past tuesday. I saw it in Newbury Comics as one of the New Release Picks; I heard an advertisement on 92.9, the River here in Boston for just her album; they've been giving it a lot of support on WXPN, the World Cafe especially; it has been included in ads for several different record stores in the Boston Phoenix; and in this week's Billboard Magazine, hers is the first album in the Reviews section, and it has a Star next to it which denotes that the reviewer recommends the album not because it has commercial promise, but because it has quality. Pretty cool. She's playing at TT the Bear's on the 21st ($7, she goes on at 10:15), Amy Rigby is there on the 6th of October, and Bettie Serveert shows up on the 27th of October. Showing up at Avalon are Joan Osborne on the 3rd of October, Moby on the 19th, and The Beautiful South on the 22nd. And at Berklee on October 17th, Emmylou Harris with Patty Griffin opening. Something i'm a bit confused on is that the ads in this week's Boston Phoenix say the tickets go on sale this saturday, but ticketmaster.com has them onsale since August 17th. Puzzling.
