All texts with figures of killings above 200,000 and in some cases as many as several millions (considering the population in Europe being 9M or so) are not to be trusted at all. Modern texts operate with 40k to 150k depending on how far the studies of the court materials (far from finished as of yet) from the years of the witch hunt have come. It is quite interesting how the killings differ throughout Europe compared to what was believed some years ago. There were very few convictions where the church was involved - most of them happened in areas with little or none influence from the church itself. In some places (Iceland for example) no women were burnt - only men, and in Spain very few were convicted at all (only a couple actually) - most of the burning happened in middle europe - northern France and Switzerland. So as I said before - most text books used in schools got wrong facts in them which is very sad. - -- Yngve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 10:32:22 EDT From: Chikaskia@aol.com Subject: Re: 'the crucible' i included the two particular links on the basis of, for the first, linking to ehrenreich and english, i have long respected their scholarship, and this is a recent work of theirs, i personally am curious how barbara would respond to reading, the text of the second link, written by jenny gibbons, who concurs with your comments precisely. i understand and support your response ynvgve, and echo to all that it is paramount to base one's study on recent scholarly work. gibbons makes a succinct point of that throughout her treatise. as an aside, while researching for my prior post this morning, i found an email address for barbara ehrenreich and wrote her. if i hear back from her, i plan to ask her to read jenny's' piece and comment back to me~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 11:29:49 -0400 From: "Loretta Pontillo" Subject: RE: 'the crucible' /wicca (OT by now!) hey guys, some thoughts on learning about wicca and teaching the salem trials. no music here! just to throw in my three cents, I thought I'd say that anyone who is interested in learning about wicca for his/her own edification is advised to read just about anything by Scott Cunningham, especially "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practicioner." Scott was an intelligent, humorous, lively, down to earth writer. I remember one comment of his, on the subject of "what to wear." He said something to the effect of, "a lot of people like big robes with wide, bell sleaves. But those tend to catch on fire when you're lighting a candle. So I advise against it." :) I also like Power of the Witch by Laurie Cabot, tho I think she's a complete kook. She claims to have made it snow in July. Well, okay. But she does have some very nice stuff about witchcraft through the ages. For instance, women in the middle ages would pack wounds with mold -- which seemed like magic until people understood penicilin. If you take Laurie with about a *container* of salt, she's very useful. Regarding the salem trials, tho, in my studies it had little or nothing to do with "magic" or "wicca" or any such thing. Clearly, it was mass hysteria. You MIGHT do well to make a connection between the hysteria of the witch trials and a hysteria more close to home -- hysteria over boybands for instance (I'm sure girls faint and scream there), or even the "hysteria" of certain religious revivals (though you'd probably get in trouble for saying that...) Maybe ask the students of times they've seen mass hysteria in action, or other times in history they think hysteria was in action. Like the obvious connection to the mccarthy era. just a thought. I haven't been out of school too long, and I know I always enjoy learning about things more when there is connectivity. Loretta Also, and I hope this isn't too scholarly, but I read a fascinating article on the witch trials once that suggested they were the result of a tension between west salem and east salem, which was connected to young/old tension, present/future tension, rich/poor tension, and so forth... I can't quite remember it now.... but it really was interesting and if I remember it six years later you can bet at least some of your students would like it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 08:37:30 -0700 (PDT) From: Craig Gidney Subject: Anneli Drecker info [August 23 2000] Anneli Drecker to join A-ha on tour The Anneli Drecker homepage sent us this very interesting news a few minutes ago. Bel Canto's Anneli Drecker is said to go on tour with A-ha in Germany and Japan. It was A-ha's personal manager Ylva Neumann who confirmed to Norwegian newspaper VG that Anneli Drecker will join A-ha's tour in November. Neumann also said that Anneli will not be used as a support act, but as an integrated member of A-ha's band with a short section of her own. So far seven concerts are slated in Japan, the first one in Osaka on November 8th. In Germany six concerts are ready, the first in Hamburg on November 24th. The rumours is also that if Anneli gets the time to finish vocals on some new Bel Canto bonus-tracks, most likely a Bel Canto 'best of' album will be released before Christmas. In case you didn't know, the US version of "Images" will also hold exclusive bonus tracks. Expect more news soon.... She also appears on a tribute to Tim Buckley with Simon Raymonde (ex-Cocteaus) doing a version of 'Morning Glory'. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
