Several people have heard me say 'such-and-such' artist gives me goosebumps, but they're always surprised at how *literally* I use the phrase... last Thursday night I was attending a gig with Karen Tyler (a blues singer from Paso Robles), and we were talking before her show about other artists we liked... it was a very warm short-sleeved evening, but as I mentioned Pamela Means was coming to California for two weeks in September, Karen noticed my arms were suddenly *covered* in goosebumps, which convinced her Pamela Means was certainly someone to add to her must-see list . I 'discovered' Madigan about a year ago, and I've been talking up her shows ever since... she puts on one of the most interesting and dramatic shows I've seen in a long time (she's a 'punk' singer/songwriter/cello-player), and she's on an extended tour across much of the US... if it weren't for the Pamela Means show the same night, I'd definitely be attending Madigan's SEP 17 show in San Francisco... here's her tour schedule: September 17 San Francisco, CA @ Cafe Du Nord 22 Minneapolis, MN @ Entry 23 Chicago, IL @ Fireside Bowl 24 Cleveland, OH @ Beachland 25 Bloomington, IN @ Firebay 26 Pittsburgh, PA @ Millvale Industrial Theater 27 Buffalo, NY @ Mohawk Place 28 Boston, MA @ TT's the Bear w/ Mary Lou Lord 29 NYC, NY @ Mercury Lounge w/ Juliana Hatfield *early show 18+ 30 Philadelphia, PA @ Khyber Pass October 01 Washington DC @ Black Cat (TBA) 02 Chapel Hill, NC @ Kings 03 Atlanta, GA @ Eyedrum 04 New Orleans @ Tipitina's 05 Houston, TX @ Rudyard's w/ 764 Hero 06 Austin, TX @ Emo's w/ 764 Hero 07 Denton, TX @ Rubber Gloves John RAVEN ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 04:17:48 -0700 From: "The Ectophiles' Guide" Subject: Recent changes to the Ectophiles' Guide Latest changes to the Ectophiles' Guide 27 August 2000 New Guide entries added for: * Brunatex * Sheila Nicholls * Stevie Nicks Changes made to the entries for: * Kerri Simpson (additional album) * Young Marble Giants ("new" album) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are receiving this email because you have asked to be notified of updates to the Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music at http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/. "A number of inaccurate comments have been made about me in recent articles which I am taking further. I just want everyone to know I am very happy and proud to have such a beautiful son, Bertie - he is absolutely gorgeous. Far from being secretive, I am just trying to be a good protective mother and give him as normal a childhood as possible whilst preserving his privacy - surely everyone can understand that. I am having great fun being a Mum as well as working on a new album" I hope you will understand how invaluable it has been to me to have a very fulfilling and normal start to motherhood and I felt unable to tell you about Bertie previously for reasons already explained. He is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. He is my joy and I'm very happy and very busy being a Mum. I am finding time to write for the new album and very pleased so far. She's very intense and energetic live. I wish I had been doing the tiara thing when I saw her, but I did get to speak with her briefly (I told her a stupid story about Rasputina but she did tell me she'd been approached by Melora but that their styles didn't quite mesh.) She used to be one half of Tattle Tale (with Jen Wood, who I also adore) and now has done projects both solo and as Bonfire Madigan with a band. Really, you should check her out. Her CDs are available at http://www.killrockstars.com - $10 post paid I believe. Saddle the Bridge is a bit more accessible I think, but From the Burnpile is really amazing too and has my favorite song, Snowfell Summer on it. If you can find them, her other projects (CDs and 7"s) are also great. And if you've read this far you'll find out that I bought a Happy Rhodes CD (Many Worlds Are Born Tonight I think it's called?). Nifty. And I *highly* recommend the new Dar Williams. It's lovely. Why didn't I find her sooner? marla (tiara) ===== ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Famous people wearing my tiara: http://www.marlatiara.com (*updated 8/12/00 - Sarah Slean!) Message: For those interested The Globe and Mail, Monday, August 28, 2000 Queen of Sheeba reclaims her voice To make her label Sheeba Records a success, Jane Siberry had to become co= mputer savvy, leaving little energy for songwriting By Stephanie Nolen Toronto -- In the long, dark nights hunched in front of a computer screen,= Jane Siberry wept and wondered if she would ever get to be a singer again. But four years after setting herself up as her own label, and two years aft= er that business collapsed, the waif with the gooseflesh voice and the cult= following has news. She has rebuilt Sheeba Records, become a bit of a Web = queen along the way, and has a new album to release, which is, of course, w= hat singers do. Siberry sat down to lunch last week, kitted out in waif-wear (Nikes, tennis= socks, crochet slip dress, fine mesh T-shirt, rumpled bleached locks) that= belied her 44 years. She frowned suspiciously at a vegetarian burger that = looked dangerously close to meat, then spoke in a small, wary voice about H= ush, a collection of traditional spirituals which will be on sale at=20 http://www.janesiberry.com in early September, and in record stores at = the end of next month. She has hooked up with Sounds True, a Colorado-based distributor of spiritu= al music, to release Hush. But all the rights to the album belong to Sheeba= , and the deal is for just this record. "I'm very wary," she said, iron creeping into the bird voice. "I'm very gun= shy. I've cleaned up a lot of messes, I've spent so much money." Siberry walked away from Warner Bros. Records in 1996, frustrated at how li= ttle money she saw from her deal with them and at the "waste of energy" in = their distribution of her music. She founded Sheeba, through which she plan= ned to sell her music over the Internet. For the first two years, she had people running Sheeba from Toronto, while = she worked and toured from New York. But the bottom fell out of the busines= s, and Siberry made the decision to come home, take on a huge debt and put = it back together as a company of one. It was a slow and often painful process. "I would cry sometimes: I have a gift in this life and I just spent three m= onths cleaning up the database." Siberry eventually graduated from sole staff member to employ a bookkeeper,= an accountant, an office manager and a techie. But she is an obvious contr= ol freak who never again intends to let anything happen at her label withou= t her knowing about it. "It's much faster, I have much more peace of mind doing it myself." Her voi= ce is steely again. So today she oversees how the CDs are packaged, how the labels are folded, = and at what angles the postage and the air-mail stickers are affixed. And she abandoned the guitar for a while to tackle the world of computer co= de. "I had noticed my brain short-circuiting more and more when explaining = what I wanted to programmers," she writes in a self-published booklet, One = Room Schoolhouse. "The more involved I became with programming, the closer = I could get to what I heard in my head. I started to send people home, work= late alone." She learned to do graphic design eight years ago; now those skills are appl= ied to the maintenance of her lush Web site. One byproduct of micromanagement is that she has developed a whole new rela= tionship with her fans. Today she knows many of her best customers by name. That sits well with some fans -- those who have come to see the Web site as= another Siberry offering, just like an album, one still a work in progress= . Those fans relish receiving her occasional newsy e-mails. This proximity = sits less well with others, though. "Some people were turned off, I get tha= t a lot," she said with a shrug. "To some people I'm a real intimate compan= ion, and to hear me talking on their phone in a really neutral way about th= eir credit card is too jarring." She has rebuilt Sheeba to a point she calls healthy, but needed the partner= ship with Sounds True to get Hush out there. "It was time for Sheeba to expand," is how she puts it. "My fan base can't = support new work without help." Internet sales alone would not fund the stu= dio time and keep her alive through the months needed to write and record n= ew music. On-line sales account for 5 per cent of her store sales internati= onally -- that is, if she sells 100,000 of a Warner Bros. release, she can = expect to sell 5,000 from the Web site. "I thought I would sell a lot more = over the Internet." By now, she knows the accounting intimately. "For a $60,000 record, much as= I do things cheaply with a little home studio, I need an engineer," she ex= plained. "If it sells for $18, the cost of sales is $5 (for manufacturing a= nd advertising)." So she must sell at least 4,600 to break even. That doesn= 't, of course, include a budget for supporting her at even low-level, rock-= star lifestyle rates. For now, the extra cash is coming from her publishing= revenue, the use of her songs in movies (such as The Crow and The Sweet He= reafter), and "a tight belt." Plus, there has been some novel fundraising: Blessed with a coterie of fier= cely loyal fans, accrued since her first release in 1981, Siberry has had a= n audience to whom she could auction off such items as original handwritten= lyrics and clothing she wore on album covers -- and the buyers get receipt= s that tell them how much studio time they just made possible, at $50 an ho= ur. This, though, will change as more people have Internet access, she's sure. Siberry embraced the Internet at the relatively pioneering time of 1996, re= cognizing that it alone would make the publicity (free, via e-mail) and mai= l-order side of the business viable for a one-woman label. Her love affair with the technology gives her an interesting perspective on= the current fight over Napster and similar Web sites which use MP3 technol= ogy to allow users to download music for free, in violation of record-label= copyright. "Now that I know exactly what it costs, I know that that's $13.= 40 I don't have for studio time [when someone downloads her album instead o= f buying it]," she said. She loves the freedom of downloading -- "It's so easy" -- and uses it, for = example, for promotional material, sending out clips of work. But she is mu= ch more vulnerable to the loss of revenue than a monolith such as Warner Br= os. "People are having to become conscious of their values," she said. "If = they download, they make a conscious decision, all by themselves, about wha= t they think is correct, integrity-wise. Napster is a training ground to ex= pose our lack of values and to see what [kind of] life we want." Hush, the new album, has an old-time, solid values feel to it. "My favourit= e songs, a lot of people's favourite songs, are songs like Jacob's Ladder a= nd Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." They are childhood songs, the ones for public= consumption, she said -- since the other ones she remembers are the theme = to Gilligan's Island and various commercial jingles. The album was inspired by a young Scottish girl with Down syndrome, a frien= d of Siberry's. "I would play certain songs on the piano, and for some she = would just light up, and some would leave her cold -- my songs, for example= ," Siberry said with a small, self-deprecating laugh. "And I thought, I [co= uld record an album] to really make someone happy, to push those buttons, t= o not have to apologize -- it's not hard listening, you don't have to work = at it," as you might with some of her original material. And it was all she was up to, after the struggle to rebuild Sheeba. "I coul= dn't have done any record now but this one, while I'm still ensconced in ma= king my company work. I couldn't unlock my solar plexus. It took me so long= to get deep, to a high resolution place." She plans to write a new album in the autumn and record it in January. Doin= g it on Sheeba gives her a vastly faster turnaround time. And in the meanti= me, she can reflect on all the ways she is a "changed person." "I think I was a bit jaded and careless before," she said. "My eyes were op= ened: I have a much greater sense of respect -- I was very ignorant and nai= ve. Most people, at the end of the month their stomach is in a bit of a cle= nch. And that's what they can expect to the end of their life." - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------= - ------- "Enter for your chance to win a Mercedes-Benz ML320 at Onvia.com, Canada's largest source for small business products, services, news and information.
