Speaking of The Sundays and the classics, it's funny how, to me, they made "Wild Horses" their own! I love this song, and when I hear it I never think of it as a Rolling Stones cover anymore, in fact the original version jars and grates compared to Sundays' masterpiece! I'd vote for it as one of the most sucessful covers, ever. Since The Sundays are not the sort to release 2 records every year, I'm always on lookout for acceptable substitute. (*Chuck feels stupid regardless of what the answer is*) >The guide is an ongoing project of volunteers. If you wanna volunteer and >do a page for Duncan Sheik, I'm sure you can. (neile@sff.net is the >editor-in-chief) So I guess I need some support -- I'm sure some of you must be Duncan Sheik fans. Make yourself heard! He's kind of like Jeff Buckley, only with more personal lyrics and a less flashy style (especially vocally). But I won't describe him too much because I'm sure you've all heard him (i.e. the overplayed and non-representative hit "Barely Breathing"). Personally I prefer his second album "Humming" to his s/t debut. The Ecto Guide is so thorough that I will probably have a hard time finding any artist that none of you have heard of. I do know one, however, because she's a friend of mine. Any fan of Sarah McLachlan's lighter piano stuff should check out RACHEL LEEP at www.natrock.com. If you live in the Grand Rapids area of Michigan, you may have already heard of her (she plays lots of gigs in coffee shops and such), but I know her from music camp where we worked together on a song. She has a beautiful voice, and her band setup is rather unconventional with a guitar, African drums, and her on piano and vocals. And did someone say they liked the Smiths? They are my new band interest of this month! Morrissey's lyrics are pretty straightforward, but they really pack a punch (especially the ones about his "ambiguous sexuality" -- with songs like "Hand in Glove" and "The Boy with the Thorn in his Side", I'm not sure how anyone could NOT get it...) I initially got into the Smiths because both Jeff Buckley and Duncan Sheik mentioned them as one of their influences. This is the same reason I investigated David Sylvian's "Secrets of the Beehive" (it's WONDERFUL), who's solo work is DEFINITELY Ecto material. Those string arrangements... mmm... That's all for now. --Chuck ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Aug 2000 19:16:10 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Susan Court Susan Court has long been a favourite of a number of us here on ecto as Paul Blair said. There's an Ectophiles' Guide page on her, too, which has a lot of comments about her and her album. They're called the Red House Painters. Their sound is very acoustic and folk like and the first song I heard was "Trailways." It's a beautiful, melancholy song with a very unique finger strumming technique. They remind me a lot of Belle and Sebastian... even the voice of the lead singer reminds me of Belle's lead singer. Also they have a sound much like Nick Drake. I recommend you check them out. I plan on getting their album "Song for a blue guitar." Also, I'd like to mention that I'm really pleased to hear the Smiths and Morrissey being mentioned on the list. I find the Smiths to be one of the most influential bands of our era and no one has the ability to write lyrics like Morrissey. His lyrics are clever and extremely innovative. I envy his songwriting ability. Anyway, for those of you who are beginner Smiths fans I suggest you check out their self-titled debut album and my favorite... "Louder than Bombs." Also, if anyone is interested in Morrissey's solo work, I recommend "Viva Hate" and "Vauxhall and I." - Mark np : Cocteau twins -blue bell knoll ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #228 **************************
