She somehow thought that the lyrics "You Should Be Dancing Yeah" were "Taxi Cab". She kept talking about how great that new Taxi Cab song was and my sister couldn't figure out what she was talking about until one day it came no the radio when they were together. The album features 12 new tracks, all written by PJ Harvey. The title reflects the dual inspirations for the album, which was written throughout last year in New York and Dorset, with the contrasting metropolitan and rural settings influencing her material. Guest vocalist Thom Yorke duets on 'This Mess We're In', a track Harvey wrote specifically with him in mind. He provides backing vocals on two further tracks. Still, I'm intrigued enough to give her a try. Anyone out there know more about her? Edie is one of the more interesting neo-folkies around, kind of in the Kris Delmhorst vein. (Her new album is literally hot off the presses, and rumor has it she may have it available for purchase by next weekend.) And Pamela Means simply rocks. As Ani DiFranco said of her, she's "got such a deep groove, I can't get out. And I wouldn't want to." Admission is $10 "suggested donation". Please e-mail me to make a reservation. Seating is limited to 25. More information can be found at http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html. Hope to see you there! (NOTE: If we've spoken in person about this but you haven't e-mailed in a reservation, please do so. I love her. She sent me a CD last year for consideration to be booked at the coffeehouse I used to book for (http://www.TheCommonGrounds). Our schedules didn't match up, but the CD ("Restoration") has been firmly entrenched in my CD player ever since. I find her lyrics to be smart and often moving, and her direct voice (not much range, but perfect for the material) to be beautiful. I don't think the website highlights the best songs on the CD, or at least the two best songs (the powerful "Trying Not to Scream" and the poetic gem "Bluebird"). I like the contrast between the stoicism of the music and vocals with the passion of the intelligent lyrics. I've never seen her live, but plan on it when she swings through Michigan in the next couple of weeks. I've heard good things. She also played Lilith, by the way. There's my two cents.
