You know, I was thinking we should know of more Icelandic bands. I think Neile actually knows of more than she's letting onto :) One of my absolute favorite icelandic bands is Reptile. I have a disc of theres that is roughly 10 years old called Fame and Fossils, and I adore it. It sounds a lot like the Sugarcubes, but with a bit more swing, somewhat wilder, and missing einer. I've never seen a second copy, and have no idea of their fate. Also, the artist/music collective gusgus is distributed on 4AD, and I know they got some ecto discussion last year. I wasn't really bowled over by their album, but it's not too bad. Since my curiousity was piqued, I went out on the web to see what I could find. These are necessarily recommendations, as I don't know the people, but it should be fun to wander around in. http://www.nyherji.is/todmobile/ - looked promising, no sound samples. http://www.alda.is/index2.html - Wild looking woman with "troll hair" http://www.mmedia.is/dyrdin/englishindex.htm - sound samples. Sounded like lightweight pop, but not too bad. http://bjork.mmedia.is/gusgus/ - Interesting web site, especially if you like lots of motion. music & video available. http://www.4ad.com/artists/gusgus/art.htm http://www.visir.is/ifx/fokus_po - sort of a techno pop singer, I think. music and video. http://home3.inet.tele.dk/leiflars/lars/palli.htm http://www.eurovision.is/ (Selma - most of their sound links were broken. What I heard was fairly generic pop-rock that could have been from anywhere.) http://www.sigur-ros.com/main.html (I really liked this! Kind of electronica stuff, with a hint of Radiohead. Could easily be released on Projekt) http://www.saga.is/Menning/Lagmenning/Popp/BadWeb/unun.html Features Thor of the Sugarcubes and some woman with a huge mohawk. Sounds sample (which led me to the next site) was super-catchy pop-rock with a weird loping rhythm. I liked it lots, even through the really poor sound quality. (I hope that's the sample and not the record!) http://www.saga.is/badtaste/ - Excellent site that sells all sorts of icelandic stuff. If you were looking for Bjork singles, they've got piles of them for $7 a pop (cheap compared to what I've seen them for in stores). The CD's Neile mentioned are for sale here for $10 and $15. These seem like a real bargain to me. No Reptile beyond a single that didn't seem worth getting :( And for all those who couldn't get enough of einer from the sugarcubes, they had a disc from another band that he was in. I was going to ask if Jay would buy me some Icelandic oddities of his choice, but it looks like they are actually easy to buy from this web site! neal np: under the pink - tori ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 12:59:43 +0300 From: Juha Sorva Subject: Re: iceland Hi, To someone looking for Icelandic folk music, I'd definitely recommend a compilation called _Íslensk Alpydulog_ (sp?). Heh... to a European, that Web address is enough to tell that 'generic pop that could be from anywhere' is what you're going to find there. Selma represented Iceland in this year's Eurovision Song Contest, which is basically a competition, watched by hundreds of millions, to see who can write/perform the most insignificant, sugary new pop tune that should appeal to everyone. The struggle for this achievement is very intense even though it involves smiling a lot. It's so horrible it approaches camp. The Contest is also responsible for making Céline Dion famous when she won it for Switzerland in the 80's. Selma's song is actually better than the average eurosong. Which is not saying a lot. > http://www.sigur-ros.com/main.html (I really liked this! [...] Just listened to it - quite nice indeed. Juha n.p. Instead, this poor little Finn would also highly appreciate any suggestions related to New York City, as he's coming there in slightly over a month (Aug 27th until Sep 6th). In particular, hints about potentially interesting music stores/concerts and good (online?) event guides would be cool. As well as any other things you think might be interesting to see/hear.
