It's the proverbial little guys who are going to be hurt more by gnutella et al, because to them every sale counts. Actually, the idea of novels being stolen via the internet pisses me off a lot more than music being stolen over the internet does - although that's strictly for personal reasons. I'm currently wriitng a nove. I've put so much work into it and so much of my heart and soul into it, and the idea that someone could take it without my authorization and give it away for free rather scares me. I mean, I want people to read my writing - several of my short stories are on my website for anyone to read by for free. But you know what, it's my writing and how it gets distributed should be my choice. If I chose to put it online, that's my choice. If I try ot get it published, that's my choice. If I leave it in a box under my bed, that's my choice too. But it's not up to anyone else to decide. Not that I'm expecting anyone to care enough to bother to steal my novel, but still. ;) jcb. Frighteningly enough, it already has. Mostly through IRC, rather than Napster, which has historically been a haven for piracy long before Napster, and which I suspect will survive it. Anyone who doubts this can join the channel #cable-movies on EFNet and just sit there for a few minutes. I had a room-mate a while back who had every new movie before it was released in the theatres. The fact is that on the Internet right now, IP rights are essentially dead, and something is going to have to happen to deal with this. In many ways it's very like _Work and Non Work_, but seems even a step closer to a light kind of pop with all kinds of wonderful echoes of '60s jazzy-pop. A collection that can be take as superficially delightful pop, or listened to more deeply for the experimental, haunting undercurrents. I love this. Great soft vocals, too. Highly recommended. Laika, _Good Looking Blues_ A new Laika disc! Very much in the same vein as their earlier discs, which is delightful to me. I could listen to their intriguing mix of vocals, electronics and traditional instruments forever. Well, at least one wonderful disc longer now. Full of great hooks. Highly recommeneded for anyone who like ectronica. The Avengers, _died for your sins_ Penelope Houston's punk band! Not to be missed by anyone who likes this type of music. (Available through her website.) Michelle Cross, _My Name is Not Cinderella_ I really like her live material--so far, by quite a bit more than this ep. Which shows promise (good songwriting, nice vocals, nice piano work), but is basically fairly derivative. Sort of a Tori Amos/Sarah McLachlan: she has a kind of Tori voice but her songs are slightly more mainstreamy and Sarah-y. EXCEPT her live stuff, available through her web page. That seems far more highly individual and intriguing, almost cabaret-like. Not sure why they chose the particular songs on the ep instead--maybe because they're clearly more commercial. Too bad, because her other stuff is far more interesting. This I like well enough to keep it, but if it weren't for those live tracks I wouldn't be watching what she does next as closely as I am. mp3.com for samples of the disc, but do go to her web page for the live tracks. Dudley, _Public Nudism_ [official CDR] Dudley, _Are Our Oars Out?_ Dudley, _Doin' Jack_ [official CDR] Quirky folky/rock stuff interesting folk/rock I discovered on mp3.com and finally broke down to buy the discs. It reminds me a bit of early Jane Siberry--that sense of playful/angsty/wry delight. Not sure which of these I like best--they all have a few really catchy ones. Another mp3.com band, so check them out. Josette's Eye, _Alibi Clock_ A kind of indierock fusion of Sleater-Kinney and Tori Amos. Intriguing enough to become a minor obsession for me. Songs and lyrics full of hooks, a song clearly about Tori. Some spoken word pieces that I can live without, but overall a strong debut album. Recommended. Also mp3.com. Moist, _Creature_ I got this because I loved David Usher's solo disc so damn well last year. Have hardly listened to it. Sigh. I'd rather play the solo disc for about the 1000th time. Pamela Zero, _Given Time [CDR]_ Pamela Zero, _Promotional Preview: LB_ Quirky experimental/a cappella stuff that's sometimes reminiscent of madrigals but frequently feels very contemporary as well. People have mentioned her on ecto before--years ago, but she deserves to be mentioned again. I'm watching for her new album, which is due out soon. Interesting and different approach. Check out samples on mp3.com. Sarah Harmer, _You Were Here_ The music on this initially was not much to my taste, but I do love Sarah Harmer's voice and sensibility enough that I've taken the time to like the music better. It took me a while to like parts of her Weeping Tile work, too. There's something about Canadian folk/rock... I don't want to like it but I nearly always do. Maybe it's in the Canadian blood or cultural training. - --Neile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Jul 2000 16:42:14 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael Colford Subject: Re: New Holly Cole Album I've been meaning to write about this, but things kept getting put off, so now I'm making the time to write this. I wanted to thank Jeff for posting about Holly's new album being released in Canada. He posted this tidbit about a month ago, and I quickly took his suggestion and went to the HMV site to preorder it. Well, anytime I'm on a Canadian record store's website, I always do my searches on my beloved Canadian artists to see if unbeknownst to me any of them have had new releases come out. I always start with my long lost, beloved Luba, Canadian pop icon (for me) of the mid-80's. I never expect to find anything, but WOW! I was shocked to find a NEW LUBA ALBUM LISTED that had only been out a couple of weeks! You could have knocked me over with a feather. More in a moment. I also found a new Jann Arden album that had just been released, and a new Mae Moore album, which had been released a year ago. (Did I miss it's mention here? If I did, I must hang my head in shame.) Coupled with a new The Tragically Hip album just released, and a new Jane Siberry iminent, I am in Canadian release heaven! Now, on to the albums... Holly's "Romantically Helpless" is a superb continuation of her smoky, jazz style. She takes a slight step back toward the traditional jazz after her foray into pop with "Dark, Dear Heart," but doesn't forsake it entirely. As my boyfriend, Trent said during "If I Start to Cry," "Boy, Holly almost sounds upbeat!" Also, I love the in-joke of Holly covering herself with "Make It Go Away." I've even enjoyed the video which you can view on her website. If you're a Holly fan, you won't be disappointed with this album. Next up, Luba's From the Bitter to the Sweet. I was a huge fan of Luba in the 80's. This is her first release in about 13 years! And it sounds like she picked up pretty much where she left off. Her albums Secrets & Sins and Between the Earth & Sky were lushly, produced, 80's new wave/pop at its best, powered by Luba's amazing, powerhouse voice. With her later release, All or Nothing, Luba eschewed the style and long gloves for a decidedly Americana, John Mellencamp roots rock & roll approach, which utilized her strong voice to good effect. Now, with From the Bitter to the Sweet, Luba has blended the two styles in a surprisingly reigned in/subdued way. The music is acoustic-driven, but with heavy use of synthesizer. Her trademark, big voice is evident, but she has learned to use restraint... the dynamic is fabulous. Luba has obviously gone through some hard times since her last album, and the lyrics reflect that. Oddly enough, many of these songs were written in the early 90's, and must have been written for an album that never materialized. Conspicuously absent is the name of her husband and former drummer. Perhaps this is the hard time she references in her lyrics. It's hard to believe, but after 13 years, I still love Luba! Jann Arden's 4th album, Blood Red Cherry continues her low-key, mid-tempo pop/rock/balladeering style, but on this album, Jann adds some sassy brashness and irony to the mix on tracks like "Best Dress" and "I Only Wanted Sex." Jann's one of those artists who can sound totally mainstream one minute, but the next minute you realize there's a lot more going on in terms of melody, lyrics and song structure. Blood Red Cherry is a fine continuation in this talented musician's career. Unfortunately, Mae Moore's new eponymous album was backordered and I've only just received it. I've listened to it a couple times and like what I've heard. Mae's ultra-cool laid back style is still in evidence. Man, I'm so glad that these terrific Canadian artists are still recording! Needless to say, I love the new Tragically Hip album, Music @ Work too! Okay, better wrap this up! Take it easy, Michael n.p. Jann Arden - Blood Red Cherry n.r. Funny, I just returned from a show where I ran into Ms. Heaton in the audience. Colossal Olive, a trio of New Haven-area singer/songwriters (Kate McDonnell, Cara Burgarella, and Alison Farrell) re-formed after a five-year hiatus for "one wild night", presented by the New Haven Folk Alliance. They opened for themselves (each artist did two of her own songs), then after a short intermission presented their hilarious shtick. They're basically the type of a cappella group you'd expect to see on Comedy Central. Sure, they all have great voices that harmonize together perfectly, but I mostly enjoyed the between-song silliness, some of which was fall-down funny. They clearly get along very well and really enjoy singing together. (And best of all, it was all happening not five minutes from my house! Whoo-hoo!) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 01:42:54 -0400 From: three damons Subject: Re: Spamster Ted wrote: > > josh burnett wrote: > > > On Sat, 8 Jul 2000, Ted wrote: > > > > > P.S.
