I'm assuming the Morcheeba is a full album. I've been meaning to get something by them, and so long as that isn't a single or anything, I'd be game. Let me know if you haven't sold them yet. neal ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 00:16:35 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: various At 8:37 PM -0400 6/16/00, JoAnn Whetsell wrote: >Hi ecto!! One of the local weeklies in Miami (where I was last week), had hot picks for internet sites. One of their picks was the apparently newly launched official Rickie Lee Jones site. They claimed it was very well done, and contained a lot of songs that were not available anywhere else. I haven't checked it out myself... just passing that tidbit along. Some recent listening.. Vanessa Daou "Dear John Coltrane" Not as good as Zipless but few things are. Still its very nice trip-hop with sensous vocals and clever lyrics. Mary Timony "Mountains" Helium are still on my list of bands to check out..This is quirky, delightfully dark alternative rock. Her voice is cool and the lyrics very different from anyone else's. Have been checking out Vyktoria Pratt Keating..Very cool, very ecto stuff. Hard not to compare her to certain ectopilic goddesses.. Fans of Kirsty Thirsk might want to check out Balligomingo at mp3.com..they are a Delerium-style group that have Kirsty on guest vocals on a track. Her voice is cool and the lyrics very > different from anyone else's. This is one of the few CDs that has been absolutely kicking my head in this year... every time I listen to it, I get a different perspective on it... it seems to be all about a specific character (maybe Mary Timony herself, or maybe just an aspect of her) who's really into, like, unicorns, and reads those horse novels that were so popular with little girls in the late 70s and early 80s and she's maybe 16 and Labyrinth is her favorite movie and she plays guitar sorta-kinda and piano sorta-kinda and keyboard sorta-kinda... but the weird thing is that it's really brilliant in its update of the medieval sound... the 2 songs utilizing that lo-lo-lo-LO-fi organ sound are written in EXTREMELY oldskool chord progressions... like 12th century plainsong chord progressions... and her guitar playing has elements of Arabic music in it, and the piano sounds like a harpsichord... I don't know... this whole CD is quite brilliant though; the cheesiness and childish innocence are more vehicles for the artistic point, rather than detractors... But apparently, I'm the only person who's been listening to the album in this way, because I've read woefully few reviews of it that seem to say the same kinds of things... *sigh* Am I the only one? Anyhow, I'm back from limbo, y'all. :D John Drummond __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages with Yahoo! Hi all, I might well be making the trek up to Boston on Monday to catch Sarah Harmer, and I was wondering if any Boston area ectophile could give some sort of walking directions to The Lizard Lounge (1667 Mass Ave) from the nearest T stop (which I assume would be the Kendall Square stop on the Red Line). Also, do any of those same Boston folk know if the idea of her performance there actually starting at 8pm sharp is even remotely plausible? I know that was originally supposed to be her start time over at the Kendall Cafe that same night, but I was under the impression that they started things a little later at The Lizard Lounge. Thanks for any help... Michael np: The Moon Seven Times -- Sunburnt nr: Inheritor by C.J. Cherryh ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #178 **************************
