I'm not familiar with these induction units, but the problems with uncontrolled switching/ejecting you describe are often caused by a dirty deck... the deck's capstans and rollers need to be cleaned periodically, and automobile decks are notoriously dirty... you can try using one of the "wet" cassette deck cleaners, available at most record stores... it's not the best way to clean a deck, but many auto decks have access problems making other alternatives difficult. >B) should I just settle for some Radio Shack 'traction in a bottle'? I only own their last album and it didn't meet my expectations (The album was recommended to me and I expected/wanted to be blown over.) The show was good (Not great, I don't think I would see them again). I was mainly really impressed with the quality of their voices. At times I felt like I was hearing Jane Siberry, a bit of Cranes and others. I think they would do a great job on a tribute album...singing some songs of other people, but with a twist. I'm not sure if I think their "sound" does justice to their voices. - -christine :) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages with Yahoo! Earlier they used to be more rock-oriented, with more of a droning and engaging (if that's possible) sound, more Velvet Underground. Their high-mark commercially came with Emporer Tomato Ketchup in 1996. Since then, well, their sound has gotten progressively more Jazz-pop, which has alienated lots of their older fans. It's not surprising that first-time listeners find it kind of thin. The stuff they are doing now is frankly rather hard to get into at first, and live is kinda flat; however, on cd it bears up on repeated listenings. Underneath it all--holding everything together--are the voices of Laetitia and Mary Hanson. The cleaning unit is the cassette type but the tape deck ejects it after a couple of seconds. I assume it has some kind of sensor to detect a jammed type which is triggered but there being no tape. To clean I have to stick the cleaner in about fifty times. Still I don't know how good a job it does and I don't know of any other way of cleaning it. It seems likely that your induction unit has a similar problem. Ken RAVEN@igc.org wrote: > > At 17:30 06/14/2000, kerry white wrote: > > >Hi, I have a portable CD player with car kit. Perhaps that's not spinning freely and the cassette deck is sensing the extra torque on the spindle and reversing for that reason. (in other words, maybe you don't need to touch the cassette deck, but rather make sure everything's spinning freely on the adaptor) Jeff n.p. _The Secret Language of Birds_, Ian Anderson (just came out, and it's basically the Tull album I've been waiting for since _Crest of a Knave_ 13 years ago. While most of the instruments outside the flutes and guitars are synthesized, it's still intended to sound like an album of acoustic folks songs and is quite lovely. Mostly it's just Ian and one other player, but the rest of the current Tull lineup makes the occasional appearance) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 13:02:11 -0500 (CDT) From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Fwd: Re: stereolab/sonic youth - --WebTV-Mail-23672-4445 Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit Hi, I forgot to cc this to the group. I _love_ Miss Modular and like the rest of it. I have acquired several other StereoLab CDs and found one or two cuts on some and nothing on others that I can listen to with any regularity. Zappa had a term: statistical density that needed to be pierced by the listener. Much SL is to tough for me to pierce. I haven't posted in a long time, but just bought 4 cd's today, so it seems appropriate to write. Anyway, I got Rickie Lee Jone's _Magazine_ and _Flying Cowboys_ which I have never heard and haven't listened to yet, but I am really excited about because I have been listening to her a lot more lately, especially _Pirates_. While on my way out of the store, I saw Sinead O'Connor's name up on the board listing people with new and upcoming releases, and I thought, oh, I should have listened to that at the booth, but I didn't feel like going back. I've never heard any Sinead other than what got radio play, but she's always intrigued me, and the recent discussion of _Faith and Courage_ (is that the right name?) has intrigued me enough that I will go listen to it online or in a store at some point. Anyway, my real point is that while looking at the board, I noticed COMING SOON: ANI DIFRANCO Does anyone know what Ani is planning for her first release of the (sort of) new millennium? Wasn't there a discussion of French language music a few weeks/months ago? Someone who was asking for his daughter who's taking French in school or something? Anyway, in addition to checking out the much recently praised Jorane, which is a must must must for French and cello enthusiasts and ectophiles at large, MYLENE FARMER is also well worth checking out. I listened to a bit of her cd at the store today because I liked the album cover, and it became one of the four. More details when I've actually heard the whole album, or even an entire song. Also got an album by a Middle Eastern group. Details later because my mind is blank and my body is too lazy to get up. Oh! another question. Did anyone go to the concert at the Bottom Line in NYC last night? A co-worker was telling me about it, and it sounded very ecto-ish. 4 female singer-songwriters, whose names, alas, I cannot remember. Highly recommended albums I have gotten lately: the Nields _If You Lived Here, You'd Be Home By Now_ The Nields have done it again. Another great album, perhaps even more eclectic in styles than _Greta_ and _Play_ (the only other Nields albums I am familiar with). Jorane _Vent Fou_ Beautiful. Intense. Haunting. No point in going on. If you haven't gotten it yet after all the discussion here, there's no convincing you. :) Jill Sobule _Pink Pearl_ discussed already. a few misses for me, but overall a VERY good album, and quite fun. also recommended: Rebecca Campbell _Tug_ and Damhnait Doyle's new one I think it was released in Canada in 1999 and elsewhere in 2000, but would have to look that up). This is more mainstream pop, and the lyrics aren't always challenging, but it's still a good album, and good to listen to. No Doubt _Return of Saturn_ Not the same kind of lively energy _Tragic Kingdom_ had, but this is a fun album too, and I enjoy it. This broadcast will be at 11:00pm ET, with the normal Wiz Of Oz sound on the normal audio channels, while the Dark Side Of The Moon will be on the SAP audio feed. Don't be confused if you tune in earlier and see the Wizard Of Oz and fear that you missed it, TCM is also broadcasting the film at 8:00pm ET, but NOT with Dark Side Of The Moon on the SAP feed. If any Ectonians here do not know what this is all about, perhaps someone else here can better explain it, as while I know the basics, I don't at all know any of the specifics that might draw in someones' interest.
