I've been listening to an amazing, eclectic singer/songwriter from Wisconsin named Elizabeth Schaefer. It's been a long time since I've been this obsessed with someone's music. I've heard her mp3.com samples..Amazing music. I'd recommend her too. Anna Maria __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Kick off your party with Yahoo! What profits there are go to the record > company. i think this might be an incorrect statement when you hear about some punk signing for $1million, they are in fact taking an advance on what their record is projected to earn. [if the artist makes more than the $1million, they will receive further royalty cheques.. note that top 40 artists would be only 'earning' about $2/album from the sale.., so they would need to sell 500,000 copies b4 they started to earn more] :. the profits ARE going to the artist earlier > The artist (in this genre, at least) makes his/her money touring and doing > gigs. > I don't know if such a one as Emily Bezar (to take my favorite example) > would make money on the CDs (presuming that, upon hitting it "big" she still > sold/distributed on her own)... > > It may be like my (mis?)understanding of the publishing industry, in which > writers rarely see any money from the royalties, but, instead, make their > money on the "advances". well publishing is what the song earns when the song is played (either live - venue owners pay this, or on the radio/tv etc).. :. while an artist may get $1miilion dollar record deal against projected record sales, they may receive as much as that or more in a publishing deal against the projected _playing_ of their records.. - - they will also earn money at gigs, but for big bands this i think they genereally don't earn that much on gigs at all (depends on shows, accom etc etc), but it is more a publicity thing, after whihc they will be played more on radio/tv etc (publishing) and will hopefully sell more records (record sales). > The internet makes it possible (not necessarily probable, mind you) for > writers to profit from the old "vanity press" strategy... I actually believe that the little artist the internet is such an advantage. they can now sell cds on the same platform as the majors... - an internet web page sure mp3 might not be quite right, but soon they will work out ways for charging, maybe maybe jt > > > Chris Sampson > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Marcel Rijs > To: ecto@smoe.org > Sent: 5/22/00 10:25 AM > Subject: Re: MP3, CD RW , etc. > > Hi all, > > A little while ago, Dave Williamson wrote: > > But to those of you in effect stealing music: > > > > In the end you are simply killing the potential for a continued > pipeline > > of artists that this list in fact celebrates. The following list of on-line music sources, with notes on some may be useful in locating hard-to-find items: http://dirk.dra.com/%7Edirk/dirkhome/music/vendors.htm Esprit in UK has large selection, but prices are not cheap for what is basically used material. Very professional service, though. Good source for Australian new (they'll special order for you) and used is Redeye Records in Sydney: http://www.redeye.com.au Takes two to four weeks to get air shipment from Australia, depending on the mails. Skivhugget in Sweden is fair-priced and fast. Total Recall in Germany is very reasonably-priced for used European records and Cds. Stay away from WMI Music Distribution in Canada. They're slow and unresponsive to email.
