There is a really interesting interview with Tom Lehrer on theonion.com at the moment. For those of you who don't know who Tom Lehrer is, he is probably one of the most brilliant satyrical song writers ever with such hits as The Vatican Rag, and The Masochism Tango. I highly recomend him to people with a taste for very twisted and completely un politicaly correct humor. Thanks! well i have always been sent to ESPRIT whose URL is www.eil.com whenever i do a search for rare CD's. they are listed on a lot of different websites as well for finding rare promos or deleted items. i have never ordered from them before, so i can't say anything about their reliability, but whenever i check their stock, i am usually impressed by what they have (they often have rare promos, acetate test presses, and deleted singles...). for example they have the Y KANT TORI READ original US promotional 7" for THE BIG PICTURE for sale. on the other hand they are asking $104 for it. but i guess it is worth it for those collectors who must have everything.... anyway hope this helps. irvin - ------------------------------------------------------------------- This message has been posted from Mail2Web http://www.mail2web.com/ Web Hosting for $9.95 per month! The sound quality is phenomenal, Lori McKenna opened the show, and it includes a rather indepth interview with Ms. Ferrick. I'm listening the the show right now, so I'm not sure the track list or anything, but it's sounding excellent. Highly recommended. Anyone heard Jill Sobule's new album? - -- Mark Miazga miazgama@msu.edu http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 17:28:44 -0400 From: eperkins@mindspring.com Subject: Elizabeth Schaefer I've been listening to an amazing, eclectic singer/songwriter from Wisconsin named Elizabeth Schaefer. It's been a long time since I've been this obsessed with someone's music. She has 4 albums, all highly recommended, particularly her last one, Moodswing. Her 3rd album, At the Heart of What's Obvious, is similar in feel to her 4th one, and her first and second (This Theater Was Razed and The Spirit of Spotty) are also consistently good (particularly the first) though in a slightly different way. Her work is often given the obligatory comparison to Kate Bush, which I can't comment on since I haven't listened to Kate much. The most direct comparison I can think of, particularly for her later work, is Mary Lydia Ryan on guitar, with a more classically trained voice. Her singing has definitely matured over the course of the 4 discs. The 1st disc features more high-pitched, sometimes girlish vocals, at times sounding almost exactly like Leah Andreone (just in her singing, not at all in the style...) and other times venturing into strange territory somewhere between Emily Bezar and a less extreme version of the Cranes' Alison Shaw (again, just in sound). The later albums feature more toned-down - but never straightforward - vocals. The music itself pulls from a variety of styles, including rock, jazz, and cabaret. The second and third albums are more rock-oriented, but not in any traditional sort of way. Check out mp3.com for samples. Highly, highly recommended. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #147 **************************
