Ectoes -- I'm coming out of Lurk Ness because I was just wondering if there is any artist's music whom you think, sounds totally different when you're stoned? I don't want this to get into a discussion about pot because we all know it's illegal and ...I was just wondering. Anyone know anything about a band called Witness? I picked up their cd, Before the Calm, on spec, and it's quite wonderful -- a haunting collection of muted, melancholic, bruised and aching tunes and semi-tunes (some drift a bit) reminiscent of a mellow Counting Crows or REM's Find the River and the like. The cd is on Island records, and I think they're English, but they sound American. Any clues? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 May 2000 18:33:15 -0500 From: rjk1@cs.wustl.edu (Bob Kollmeyer) Subject: Dalle/Rhodes II Neile Graham writes: | At 7:02 AM -0400 5/16/00, Donald G. She | could be described as moody--does that mean she's Goth? I dunno. I think | of "Goth" in music as having a more overwrought sound. Anyway, the sound | throughout the three discs is somewhat similar. I need to listen more, of | course. Rather than just tossing this into the ever-growing "I really should respond to this sometime" box, figured I'd actually chime in this time. Perhaps painting a picture of a live Collaborateur show (which was Larissa Dalle on vocals and Tim Gregory on synths) and a live Larissa Dalle show (which is Larissa Dalle on acoustic and sometimes electric guitar and Tim Gregory on synths) would be illustrative. Collaborateur: Fog machines start about 5 minutes before they take the stage. Larissa in all black, occasionally with sunglasses or a mask on for half the show, incredibly gorgeous and powerful wall of sound being pumped out by Tim. White lights, often rotating on stage shooting spears of light across the stage and audience, Larissa leaping between screams and whispers - as overwrought as it gets. Need repeated exposure to pick up on more than snippets of lyrics. Artists occassionally covered: Siouxsie & the Banshees, Nine Inch Nails. Larissa Dalle: Larissa in a cowboy hat and shirt reading "one trick pony". Tim tones it way, way down, letting the sound build only on rare occasion. Plenty of complementary lights. Emphasis squarely on the songwriting, Larissa strumming on guitar, her voice in the forefront. Artists covered: Linda Ronstadt, Kitty Wells. (Crushed was pretty much a studio-only project, though I suppose one of the shows that was billed as Collaborateur was Crushed for at least part of the show.) What ties it all together? "Let Us Depress You", a wonderfully simple song that sums up the mood of both incarnations. The music both projects put out was/is dark. Were I to box them in, Collaborateur would certainly go into the Goth bin, while Larissa Dalle would be dropped into the sparsly- populated western-tinged depressive singer/songwriter slot. Perhaps their lot in life is to meld it all into some gothic-western hybrid and take the world by storm. Or not. Far be it from me to be critical of anyone for following their muse - quite the contrary I admire them for having the courage to risk alienating their fanbase. Nor would I expect as sharp a show in the first year as Collaborateur was putting on by their 6th. Nor is the "one trick pony" shirt Larissa's worn on more than one occasion lost on me. Personally, though, I'll ocassionally get out and see how their current project is progressing (she's now to the point where it is at least not painful to watch her play guitar), but in their current state, they are more of a "check it out if there's nothing better going on, 'cuz there's always next week" band. Collaborateur I more than once passed on national touring acts to catch - perhaps one show this incarnation of Larissa & Tim will click for me too. But it certainly hasn't been easy getting used to hearing lyrics like "So darling write me letters every day In care of Heartbreak U.S.A." coming from the same stage that for years was better represented by lyrics like "And all along I could have known if I'd been made of stone But I am soft and you dug in, too fucking soft, I let you in". And on to the second part of that subject... Found a homeless Rhodes II disc sitting in a used bin. Since Sampson still hasn't gotten around to reissuing the back catalog if anyone wants me to pick it up, let me know. Yahoo News: CANNES, France (Reuters) - Danish director Lars von Trier's harrowing melodrama ``Dancer in the Dark,'' starring Icelandic pop singer Bjork, won the Golden Palm for best movie at the Cannes Film Festival awards ceremony on Sunday. Von Trier, who has seen the prestigious Palm slip through his fingers twice before, raised his fist in the air in a sign of victory as he accepted the prize. ``I've done my best to make a good film,'' Von Trier told a press conference. ``Dancer in the Dark,'' von Trier's first musical, reduced the audience to tears at its festival screening and was widely expected to win. Bjork scooped up the Best Actress award for her acting debut in Von Trier's film as a Czech immigrant in rural America who saves her paltry factory wages to pay for an operation for her son, who suffers the same disease that makes her go blind. Whenever things get too tough, she dreams that life is a musical comedy of which she is the star. ``I felt like a fish out of water,'' said the elfin performer, who wrote the film's music. ``I was too much in the world of words and not enough in the world of music.'' ``When Lars convinced me that the person who wrote the songs should be the person who played the role, I knew...this would be my first and last role,'' Bjork added. The shooting of ``Dancer in the Dark'' gave way to rumors that Von Trier and Bjork were at each other's throats. ``What I have done with Bjork was very p ainful and extremely intense. But it was remarkable,'' Von Trier said. ``It was as if we read each other's minds.'' ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #142 **************************
