Philip david Morgan wrote.. I want to say Klaus Nomi. Out of curiosity, I picked up an import 45 with his multitracked cover of (yes) "Ding, Dong, the Witch is Dead" (amusingly recalled, now that the book _The Wonderful Wizard of Oz_ is one hundred years old), and a Purcell aria (from _Dido & Aeneas_, I believe) on the flip side. I didn't hear the whole album from which those tracks came (_Simple Man_), but what I did hear was quite amusing. The Purcell on Side 2 was a huge surprise. Yes..I agree. I've got Simple Man and he does sound very strange. the rest of that album is equally weird. The version of Marlene's Falling in Love again is cool. For guys, there's always the lugubrious Nick Cave (if gravediggers sang, it would sound like this) as well as Tom Waits, Neil Young (how did he make a career with a voice like that? But it works!). Brit Kevin Coyne has a style that can kindly be termed "unique", but my final and predictable vote has to go for Peter Hammill, whose voice is a weapon. A bit mellowed in recent years, it is still the kind of voice that soars, snarls, savages and seduces at once -- gentle as an angel's whisper one moment, like a rottweiller with a college degree and a nasty disposition the next. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 15:32:59 -0700 From: Ricardo Subject: Weird Voices. How on EARTH can we ever forget Miss Yoko Ono? I am endlessly thrilled with what she can do with her voice, but at times it draws up the image (for me, anyway) of someone having thrown a house cat up into functioning helicopter blades. My apologies to the cat lovers in the audience... Ricardo / San Francisco ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 22:28:42 -0400 From: "Foghorn J Fornorn" Subject: Weird Voices. Lots of good choices already been given here, but I would add: Dagmar [Krause] of Slapp Happy/Art Bears/Henry Cow "fame". Laurie Anderson, especially the electronically altered voice pieces ["... Who tore up my wallpaper samples?..."] And given the broad definition of "weird", I'd like to mention Annie Haslam for her gorgeous and ethereal chant near the end of the live version of Ashes Are Burning. Yowzer! Peter Hammill is also my first choice for weird and wonderful male voice. Some others off the top of my head: Captain Beefheart - goes without saying. And for that matter, also: Frank Zappa - interesting bit of trivia: Frank envied anyone who could sing and play their instrument at the same time. He could not. And of course, when dictionaries with audio clips become commonplace, you'll look up "weird voices" and you'll hear: The Residents. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #140 **************************
