Time to start a new thread..Which singers do you think have the weirdest voices you have heard? I dont mean this in a bad way. I mean as in "how on earth do they do that?". My vote goes to Diamanda Galás, the child voiced Alison from the Cranes, Victoria Williams and the Sparks singer who sounds totally out of this world. And in his own way Mark E Smith from the Fall. I am listening to his new CD (Mystery White Boy) right now and along with it giving me chills, I am amazed at how he does that. It's beautiful. I also asked the engineer what projects they have coming up, and he informed me that Tanya Donelly will be in the studio tonight as well as this weekend to record some new songs. I was quite happy to hear that, and found it serendipitous that I had been listening to her last effort, Love Songs for Underdogs, while on my way to the interview. For "how on earth do they do that", I'd give Happy the award, hands-down. Anyone who has seen her sing in person can attest to this - it's jaw-dropping to see as it happens. There is no visible effort at all, even as she's going from the very bottom to the very top of her range and back again in the space of literally three notes. Amazing. But for "weird voices", I'd have to say Betsy Martin from Caterwaul needs to be on the list (the band wasn't called that for nothing). Also Kristeen Young and Bjork. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 22:10:18 -0500 From: Kim Justice Subject: fading video memory Someone here will know this; I'm confident of it. There was a video I saw several years ago which featured two female singers in a small train station. I remember liking the song but didn't see it enough times to commit it to memory. The band name was something like Banderas or Banditos perhaps and the song topic had something to do with how you chose to live your life. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Both of my candidates are dead, but they're still weird... One is Tiny Tim - enough said. The other is something I just came across on TV; it was a recording of someone - I didn't catch his name, but the presenter said he was the last of those castrato sopranoes who were apparently all the rage in the days gone by... the recording was from late last century, and it sounded otherworldly indeed.
