Max Sharam is back. She has a site at mp3.com with a new song and will be releasing new stuff. Her old song Crashlanding that I hadn't heard before is awesome. Jorane is a cross between Kate and Iva Bittova?! I'm getting a copy right now. Another mp3.com find is the very ecto-ish Connie Ianieri. Some very tasty songs she has. I had never seen Tara live and she is much better live than on CD. I like Passeneger a bit more than Silence but it's not something I play much. However, live she's funny and her voice is alot stronger. I reccomend seeing her if you get a chance. Dido was great as well. I have a feeling shes going to really take off in the next couple of years. Her live show is really strong and the people there really seemed to love her. Of course, I thought the same thing about Katell Kenieg, btu who knows. Her music falls into the genres of folk, folk/rock, and pop, with tinges of jazz. Her promotional materials describe her as falling somewhere between Ani DiFranco and Joni Mitchell, and I suppose that's a fair description, though I wouldn't say she sounds like either of them. I can't think of anyone I would compare her directly to, though her music sounds similar to that of a lot of people. At times the Ani Difranco influence can definitely be felt, and at other times her music could fit quite comfortably on a Joan Armatrading album. Most of the album is a little too pop-sounding for my usual tastes, but I have played it several times and enjoy it quite a bit. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes more pop- or mainstream-influenced music. There is some very nice piano playing (she plays piano and guitar), and her voice is strong and clear-sounding. There are definitely hints of more to come, particularly in the more stripped-down songs. This seems to be the only release she has available now, though I also found a reference to a CD entitled "what do you say?" which is actually the name of one of her songs so might just be an earlier version of this album. She has songs up at MP3.com (though with the exception of "Run," the songs that are there are not representative of what I think are her best songs). It says there her band plays often in Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2000 15:25:05 -0700 (PDT) From: Sue Trowbridge Subject: Possible good news for EWS sufferers* * for newbies, that's Ecto Wallet Syndrome or Empty Wallet Syndrome...brought on by the purchase of too many CDs, of course I just heard a story on All Things Considered about a new settlement that will allow U.S. music retailers to sell discounted CDs. Here's an article that explains the settlement: http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20000510/re/leisure_music_5.html According to the ATC reporter, this means that CDs will finally be going DOWN in price -- we might see discs priced around $12 soon, instead of $16.99. If it actually happens, it would be great news. I know that I'd be a lot more likely to buy new CDs if they cost $11 or $12, instead of trolling the used bins. (I wonder if this means used CDs will be going down in price too? My local retailer of choice, Berkeley's Amoeba Records, > recently started charging $10.95 for used copies of the latest CDs by > "superstar" artists such as Smashing Pumpkins and Steely Dan.) This may be a bad thing. From my understanding of the situation -- and I want to state out front that my understanding may be horribly limited and convoluted and/or just plain wrong -- this could have the effect of putting indie shops like Amoeba out of business. From what I understand, what happened was that there were lots of places like Circuit City and Best Buy that were using CDs as loss leaders. This means that they were selling them below wholesale -- losing money on each disk -- as a way to get people into the stores and (theoretically) buy things sold with a large enough margin to actually make a net profit. This caused much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Eventually, the major labels settled on a way of discouraging this which was based on the fact that labels grant advertisers credit for the amount of money spent by store owners. The store ponies up the money for the advertising, but then gets a credit on their next order from the label/distributor. The labels banded together and threatened to do away with these credits if CDs weren't sold for X amount over wholesale. A week or two ago, one of the majors decided to do away with this and it was assumed that the others would quickly follow suit (which has apparently happened...) I believe one of the reasons for this was the way that the internet has affected record buying -- most of the online retailers don't give a hoot about advertising. (though I suppose that right now CDNow is desperate to find ways of making money!) So now the major chains can once again use CDs as loss leaders and sell them for whatever they want. The stores that are depending on actually making money from the CDs they sell are screwed. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out, much like the whole indie bookstore vs monster chain thing. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2000 17:07:21 -0700 (PDT) From: "Scott S. I suppose I don't mind them harrassing the most evil portions of the music industry, but on the other hand people who only buy major label music in chain stores deserve to pay $17.99-$18.99 per disc! :) nobody forces stores into these agreements and nobody is forcing people to buy from those stores. On a similar topic...kind of... What's the deal with all of the advertisments for concerts and other events that list no prices whatsoever?? That's highly annoying!! And that makes the statement in the yahoo article about consumers over paying for [advertised] CDs very puzzling .... I read it a few times and didn't understand it exactly. I seem to recall CD advertising almost always showing a "sale price" at the "rock bottom contractually allowed price" (for example $10.88)- not the much much much higher "suggested retail price" ($16.99 for example) Usually the $17.99 cds are slightly older things that are not currently being advertised....??
