I FYI, Dido and Tara MacLean have a show coming up at Backbeat in Santa Clara on May 17th.Its a free show. If the recent past is any indication, Tara will be the high point of the show. Dido seems like she's burnt out on touring. Anyway, maybe I'll see you there, Drew ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 May 2000 11:04:37 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: ectoguide requests - John & Mary Hey all, I'm doing the John & Mary page for the ectoguide, and I've got NO COMMENTS! Ok, there is one, but it's from me and I'm not using it. And I'll add my own, but the page certainly seems like it should have a few more. Anyone wanna offer up some opinions? I have all the disc info, so I don't need any of that. neal now shuffling over: I Never Was Cool - Anna Wolfe and the Hounds of Carlisle Comatised - Leona Naess Up Where We Belong _ Buffy Sainte-Marie Trinity House concert - Veda Hille Bare to the Bone - Carrie Newcomer ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 May 2000 16:04:32 EDT From: "Suzanne DeCory" Subject: Project Lo's Black Canvas Hello Ecto'ers :)) Maybe someone here can help me.. I have been trying for months to locate Project Lo's Black Canvas. It includes Gabriel's song "Mercy Street" which Happy sings. (I heard her do it live twice in P.A. last year and she completely blew me away!!!!) So, a few months ago someone commented about it here on the list, and ever since, I have been on a quest for the album with no avail :( Seems it's no longer out there.. for whatever reason... maybe due to the record company label it was on? (I hate when this happens!!) Same problem with Adrian Belew's two albums: Lone Rhino and Inner Revolution which many, including myself, have signed Rob Murphree's petition to the label for re-release.. (still no word) Anyway... So does anyone out here have it? Would you be willing to make me a dub on tape? Pleeeeease?? ;) I would be more than willing to do a dub trade or just even pay your dubbing expenses :) Next to happy, I am a devoted Kate Bush fan (among Joni Mitchell, Adrian Belew, King Crimson, Renaissance, Gabriel, bjork.........) I'm sure many of you are also Kate fans :) I do have Kate's imported CD box set which includes 2 CD's of Kate's rare singles that I could dub.. Songs include: The Empty Bullring, Ran Tan Waltz, Passing through Air, December Will be Magic again, Warm and Soothing, Lord of the Reedy River, Ne T' En Fui Pas, Un Baiser D' Enfant, Under the Ivy, Burning Bridge, My Lagan Love, The Handsome Cabin Boy, & Not this Time. The CD also contains 4 live songs: Them Heavy People, Don't Push Your Foot on the Heartbrake, James and the Cold Gun, and L'Amour Looks Something Like you.. and a few mixes: Cloudbusting (the Organon mix), Hounds of Love (alternative), The Big Sky (Meteorological mix), and Experiment IV )12" mix). Phewwww... ;) Well, I think the ecto list is my last hope here.. Any possibilities would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Suzanne ((: n.p. Anyone ever know whatever happened to Seven Day Diary? I saw them at Glastonbury '95, twice -- once doing an acoustic set, and the second time doing an electric set, and was sufficiently interested to buy their cd, which looks like it's one of my collection of fly-by-nights (no offence, at all: this particular division is chock full or really interesting stuff: Somatic, Mulu, the Werefrogs, Bandit Queen, etc). I was just wondering if anyone had heard of them, or heard of them lately. adamk np; Pinback -- This is a Pinback CD nr: somewhat becalmed in Jim Crace's Quarantine, which I'm having severe trouble with. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 May 2000 22:34:01 +0100 From: "Adam Kimmel" Subject: Dar Williams Another big "thank you" to the ecto list -- on its recommendation, I picked up Dar Williams' Moral City, which I thought was okay -- interesting, but a little lyrically dense, without the tunes to draw me in. Still, it provoked enough interest that I picked up End of the Summer today, and am listening to it now, for the first time. After only two songs, I decided to send this "thank you" not. Praise enough? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 May 2000 15:50:01 -0700 From: Bill Mazur Subject: Re: Project Lo's Black Canvas Suzanne, Try this link: http://www.artist-shop.com/lolorec/index.htm The Artist Shop is a great site for independent progressive music artists to distribute their work. The link above is for Bon Lozaga's and Hansford Rowe's LoLo Records. It appears that you can order "Black Canvas" there. BTW, the whole CD is excellent! I hope this info helps you out. Bill M. I have actually just been listening (still am; 2nd play) to Jill Sobule's new one, Pink Pearl, and catching up on old ecto messages I haven't read yet, and doing a guide page update for the new album when I read that: dmw@radix.net wrote: tracy bonham and jill sobule both have new records out (_down here_ and _pink pearl_ resepctively). i was sort of waiting to see if someone mentioned 'em here, but then, well, i got paid, so i took a flyer (i also heard a cut from sobule's record over the closing credits to one of those blasted wbtv shows i can't kick) and quite liked it. after one listen apiece, they both seem pretty good. both have production touches that are mildly annoying (in bonham's case, whatever you call the drum sound that so many mainstream records have these days -- i want to say that it sounds vaguely industrial, but in a defanged sort of way; in sobule's case there was a tendency toward the overly cute - the flute was a bit much). both had a couple real stand out songs, though, instant mix tape consideration fodder: bonham's "jumping bean" was quite nice; sobule's "heroes" is now my favorite name-checking song since amy rigby's sadly unrecorded "faulkner's maalox." (i like it better than "whats yr take on cassavettes") Is that quotable, btw? I'd add that "Heroes" is a great song. My other favorites are "Mexican Wrestler" and "Somewhere in New Mexico." On the first listen, there were songs that I wasn't sure I liked, or I guess I could say the album overall, because I found something a little odd in the music, I don't know how to describe it. But most of the songs don't have those odd (bad) quirks (although they do have Jill's trademark (good) quirkiness). Overall, I think it's a stronger, more even album than the self-titled album (I haven't heard the other 2) but perhaps doesn't have quite as many stand-out tracks. Still, very good, and if you like Jill's other stuff, you'll probably like this too.
