I never heard of him til this > afternoon, and now I've heard of him twice. He's got a cult audience here and abroad. He was the director of _Montenegro_ (which was re-released by Fox Lorber on VHS and DVD) and _The Coca-Cola Kid_, which got wide art-house release here. He also made _Man is Not a Bird_ and _Sweet Movie_, both available last from Facets Multimedia in Chicago. The man's films are very erotically-charged... He's a political subversive film maker, making strong statements about russian communism. So there's been hoopla because the man is in town. My film professor is crazy about him. The Bay area is also showing his films around town this week, not sure where (though I had seen WR in film class) shirley At 10:17 PM 4/26/00 -0600, neal copperman wrote: >What's with this Dusan Makavejev presence lately? Aimee's "Bachelor No. 2" made it into the "Critic's Choice" list of Time Out this week, after a nice little interview last week (which I missed and had to go back to find) in which she claims that she might bring the acoustic tour to England in July. I'm there. Also, the new cd is, apparantly, due for UK release. And, speaking of Kylie --- she'd been trying really hard lately, and while her duet with Nick is not my fave of his songs (sure, I only have his Greatest Hits, but neither that nor, surpisingly, his duet with PJ move me as much as the rest of the album) it's a start. She even appeared onstage with him to do it, I believe. A couple of years ago I was in a record shop and they were playing something over the sound system that really caught my ear. Really good, trip-hoppy kind of stuff, sort of Morcheeba/Sneaker Pimps. I was so impressed, I did what I so rarely do and asked the guy behind the counter what was playing. Turned out it was Kylie's latest cd. It didn't do too well, as it alienated her old fans and non-fans remained so, but I always remember really liking what I heard. Just goes to show, I suppose..... np -- Ben Christophers -- my beautiful demon nr - Quarantine -- Jim Crace ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Apr 2000 17:07:00 -0400 From: PAGLIACCI MICHIAMANO Subject: new hot star Last night at the Toronto venue Rivoli, played 'Jorane' ,possessing an extraordinary Kate Bush/Amos/Bjork inspired voice, a stage presence alla Tori Amos-sexual frustration, but instead of playing with a piano, her thing is the cello. Just a great concert!!!! She had the whole place where she wanted them to be-in her world. All these big guys from the canadian music industry were there as well, and she is on their 'hot list'. Everybody in the jammed packed place knew it as well. All her CD's were sold out, as were her t-shirts, etc. Her CD's are presently available at HMV and she also has a site on the web, where anyone could listen to her music. I suggest to all of you ectophiles out there to pay attention to this up-coming rising star. I also suggest to taste her very very undeniably ethereal, feminine mystique-style music. By the way, she does come from a classical background, so she's got the range for anything. Anyway, she is JORANE and all of you will see her mentioned one day on the ectophile music guide. I went and did a websearch and came up with a number of articles and what seems to be Jorane's website: http://www.tacca.com/jorane/index.html The whole website is in Frecnh, she sings in French, and I'm only limitedly able to translate, so I'm not aware of the nature of her subject matter etc, but her MUSIC, oh my goodness: it speaks for itself, and it's incredible... I hear very strong resemblances to Kathleen Yearwood, Iva Bittová, Emily Bezar... she's along the same wonderful lines as Ecto's favorite experimentalists... so rock on, I'm ordering the CD from HMV... it's called _Vent Fou_ and is only ten bucks and change American. Yes, the clips do sound very good, and everything is indeed in French. Funny how that detail wasn't included in the review. ;) According to the year-old biography on her site, she is a (now) 24-year old from Quebec City. Pagliacci, if you're reading, did she perform anything in English at her Toronto show?
