Le'see. "Rocket Man" was recorded for the _Two Rooms_ project, a tribute to Bernie Taupin and Elton John. It was released as a single, with the fabulous "Candle in the Wind" as a b-side. The CD single also featured an instrumental version of "Candle in the Wind" (as I recall, it's about as instrumental as the so-called versions of "The Sensual World" or "Running Up That Hill"). There was a video for "Rocket Man" as well. "Brazil" was recorded for the Terry Gilliam movie and was rumored to exist for many years on love-hounds. When the _Brazil_ soundtrack was finally released in the early-mid nineties, that track was on it. The CD is apparently still available. Composed by Michael Kamen...good stuff. "Magician" would be from the movie "The Magician of Lublin." Never released, that I know of. "Organic Acid" was one of the so-called "Cathy Demos." Originally released on bootleg 45s, this was a collection of demos that KaTe supposedly recorded around the ages of 14-16. Most of the tracks released on the 45s were later released on a pair of bootleg CDs, _If You Could See Me Fly_ and _Passing Through Air_. The quality is miserable, but the songs are fabulous. "Organic Acid," however, did not appear on either of those CDs and is rather rare. I've got it on tape somewhere around here, but never had it on CD. "Sexual Healing" Another of those tracks I remember hearing rumors of -- there was to be a Marvin Gaye tribute disc and this was going to be on it. I don't think the album ever came out.... don't suppose you'd share where you found these, would you? jeff n.p. _Anima Mundi_, Ingrid Karklins ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Apr 2000 17:39:12 +0000 From: jjhanson@att.net Subject: Re: kate bush stuff i didn't know about > hi! > > so yes, i've been *way* out of the loop lately (what else is new) but i > didn't quite realise *how* out until i did some random browsing yesterday > and came across several kate bush mp3s... of songs i *don't know*! > > namely: rocket man, brazil, magician, organic acid, sexual healing. Rocket Man is on the Two Rooms tribute album celebrating the music of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. This was also available as a single and features a B-Side of Candle in the Wind. Brazil is from the soundtrack to the movie Brazil. I'm not sure about the rest, but believe Magician and Organic Acid were available on fairly hard-to-find import singles from the Red Shoes. How cool is THAT pairing? Of course, I still live and hope that PJ will team up with Peter Hammill, which I consider to be the match of a lifetime. Interesting reading the Renaissance news, by the way -- are they still around? Their Live at Carnegie Hall was one of the "must-haves" when I was in college, but I couldn't get into them. Is Annie still married to Roy Wood? I'm a bit tardy on this -- Friday night woj and I saw Sarah Harmer open for Moxy Fruvous at Irving Plaza in NYC. All the information about the show I'd seen had indicated that Sarah would be going on second, but it's a good thing we were there early, because she went on first! I was surprised to see that she had a band with her: Kevin Fox (of Sarah Slean fame) on bass and cello, and , the former drummer of Crash Vegas on drums. Capsule review: she ruled. Hearing the best songs from _You Were Here_ performed live with a band was amazing. She ended her (way too short) set with "Lodestar", and it was a truly transcendent experience. She caught the attention of the Fruheads in the crowd, too -- I wasn't the only one screaming like an idiot for more. Afterwards I had a chance to say hello, and she mentioned that she's been selling a lot of CDs on this mini-tour opening for Moxy. Yay!!! woj and I decided to stick around for Moxy, but we had to suffer through Seeking Homer first. Here are a few of the thoughts I jotted down while waiting for their insufferable set to end: - -- "Deep Blue Nothing" (that's credited to woj, actually) - -- they should launch a world tour co-headlining with Jump Little Children and Eddie From Ohio. It could be called the "We're *So* All That Tour". - -- let's play "name that ripped off tune"! When they launched into an earnest version of "The Star Spangled Banner", I couldn't take it any more and fled for the bathroom, which was mercifully located downstairs and was protected from the sounds emanating from the stage. They weren't quite on the same level of voluptuous horror as Vibrolush, but they were pretty abhorrent. I fear that one day The Nields will discover them and have them open for them for weeks. :P Anyway. Moxy Fruvous did a wonderfully funny, fun grooving set, as always. I'm far from being a Fruhead -- seeing them more than one or twice a year would get annoying real quick -- but I do enjoy the Fruvous experience every once in a while. woj is of the opinion that they should forget about set lists and just do improv all night, and I tend to agree. They're all very talented musicians, and they could definitely pull it off. Alas, their threatened version of "O Canada" never materialized ... that would have been perfect payback for the Seeking Homer fiasco. But they managed to get some great New York-centered digs in during "Minnie The Moocher" and several between-song tangents. Jian Gomeshi's "Persian Cowboy" riff was particularly amusing. All in all, a worthwhile trip through the rain on a soggy Friday night, the horrid middle set notwithstanding. Can't wait to see Sarah Harmer do a full-length set one of these years... +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Apr 2000 23:01:59 EDT From: ArtfulMdrr@aol.com Subject: Re: Dream team The only thing cooler than PJ Harvey and Thom Yorke would in fact be Bjork and Thom Yorke - and not just because that particular pairing would yield some nice couplets for pop themed sonnets. She pointed out that I didn't attach a person to the comment (oops!), and as soon as I sent it off, I deleted it. So, if anyone cares to claim this comment, let me know :) "Goodbye" from Blind is one of my Top Whatever Songs. Harriet's voice, not unlike Emmylou Harris' in this regard, while not powerful, is nonetheless, pellucid. I was captivated by her voice in "Goodbye" the first time I heard it and have been a fan ever since. One thing this song has going for it, in particular, is a good job of engineering/mixing, as rock and roll goes. A mediocre sound system will render this song as mush, but a good one will afford the listener not only the benefit of Harriet but also some very good guitar work that seems to improve with turning it up. (This from a guy who almost always prefers acoustic...) This is a "sleeper" system killer, sure to make enemies and impress the peasants at the same time. "Summertime" from Static and Silence is also very arresting for the same reasons. neal np: Infinity Plus - Lois (or Omfomotu {;is if you put your fingers on the wrong keys) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Apr 2000 21:40:20 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: Sue Garner and Rick Brown Anyone know anything about Sue Garner and Rick Brown? In a word, fabulous. I've seen four Susan shows in the last 7 months (does that make me almost like a new yorker?). This was...probably the second best of the lot. She just *ruled* at Iota last month. But this was great too. She and Johnny are hysterical together, and their banter was just way too funny. For the first half of the show they traded off between songs in which Susan sang, and songs in which Johnny played the fiddle. When Susan sang, Johnny would fiddle, but she generally sat silently as he and Aiden Brennan (on acoustic guitar) went to town. Some of Susan's stuff was from the upcoming album (things she'd played in March). She also threw in "River", "In London So Fair", and a traditional song that's been done by Clannad (I recognized it, but can't recall which of the three Clannad discs I have it came from!) After a too-long intermission, the trio came back out and played about 1/3 of _Peter and Wendy_, which narrative interludes, explanations, and quotes from Barrie's book. It was...mindboggling. They played the opening piece, "Memories to Bed," "Darling's Waltz," "Star Lullaby," "The Flight," "Crocodile Tango," "Light that Beauteous Flame," and the closing. It was magical. And that was without the puppet show! I can't imagine how wonderful the whole experience would be. Anyway, they're doing one more show together, this friday in chicago for those interested. info at susanmckeown.com During the first set, Susan let slip that she'd been mastering the new album on Thursday. When I spoke to her briefly after the show, she said it's still not due out 'til September. She's also planning a tour for fall, and, Neal, she's planning to hit NM. (I told her you were annoyed that you had to go back down there before she showed up...) jeff ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Apr 2000 23:15:10 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Susan 'n Johnny At 12:07 AM -0400 4/25/00, Jeffrey Burka wrote: > She's also planning >a tour for fall, and, Neal, she's planning to hit NM. I've seen Susan and Johnny twice (outside of Peter and Wendy), and always had a blast. And the IMT space is pretty cool.
