Despite and because of the production. I have to argue with meth that this album is just as produced as Silence was, just in a different manner. Silence was much more in the semi-ethereal vein following after Fumbling Towards Ecstasy while Passenger is very much a product of current musical pop fashions. Having Malcolm Burn on hand to help produce was a good thing. If I Fall is an amazingly catchy song and there are a couple of other standout tracks. I could do without the flute on Higher though, and the "hidden" track, Shakota, is a weird animal (although the double drum fill is turning my head around in a cool way). I saw the Mila Drumke Band last saturday at Club Passim in Cambridge as part of the NEMO (new england music organization) showcase. great show, showed no ill effects from having two broken wrists last month. Sadly, or happily, enough, Jess Klein, who was supposed to wrap up the night after the band, cancelled, so they played more than just their alloted 25 minutes. even pulled out My Funny Valentine. I bought a copy of the Hip to Hip album. Nice stuff, although, again, i have some qualms with some production choices (i've found that recently, i've been listening to albums with my ear attuned much more to production and engineering. must be this stupid school thing). The band will be back in at passim around June 10th to open for Jess Klein. THey'll also be playing in Noho again at the "scary place" as mila referred to it, Fire and Water. Has anyone else who has her first album, Gathering My Name, noticed the glitch in Someone where after the chorus? The melody and harmony vocals are panned left and right during the chorus, but then the harmony goes away and the main line is supposed to seamlessly pan back to the center, but after one of the choruses, it sticks out on one side before jumping to the center mid-word. I've been meaning to ask her about that... Another album that I've really been digging is Leslie Feist's album that I got when I saw her and Sarah Slean and Sarah Harmer (yes, i really like sarah harmer's album a lot too. boy can she write some simple and wonderful songs). I absolutely LOVE the string arrangements on Feist, especially on the title track Monarch. I think the fact that the strings are poorly recorded adds to the character of the arrangements. hmmm...i think that the sarah harmer, the feist, the mila drumke jazz, and the tara maclean are the only cds i've bought so far this year. the only other new album i've gotten was by my friend kyler because i played cello on it. I'm 5 for 5. I love each and every one of these discs. I guess I'm pretty lucky. 5 by 5 in the pipe. i was interested to hear Afro-Celt Soundsystem's Whirl Y Reel used in a commercial for something related to the Sydney Olympics. Lisa Gerrard worked with Hans Zimmer on the score for the upcoming Ridley Scott movie Gladiator. She sings throughout the movie and supposedly, they are working on a song to go over the end credits that they hope will have some pop crossover appeal, sort of like Titanic. that's about it for now. i'm tired. paul "in a copenhagen city morgue" kim ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Apr 2000 03:00:05 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ********************* Harry Foster (no Email address) ********************* *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Harry Foster Sat April 21 1956 NiceGuy Kjetil Torgrim Homme Thu April 23 1970 Taurus Jeff Burka Thu April 24 1969 GoFlyAKite Christine Waite Tue April 25 1972 Taurus Matt Adams Thu April 26 1962 Taurus Brad Hutchinson Tue April 28 1964 What sign? She made what I felt was the best offer for all twelve albums together, which is what I was hoping for in the first place. The reason? Badly needed money, for bills and state income tax due. I'm planning to sacrifice more CDs (most of the non-Ectopian variety, BTW) in May at a yard sale my parents are putting together. This is going to sound strange to some of you, but I cannot continue having bouts of EWS (Empty Wallet Syndrome). I have to set limits on what I am willing to buy. I can't collect "everything" anymore. Never could. There are some artists whose albums I am holding on to: Evelyn Glennie (yes, I know, there's a new CD out), Jane Siberry, Susan McKeown, BETTY (yes), Peccadillo (thank you, Andrew), Ingrid Karklins, Loreena McKennitt...the local indie stuff stays put (that includes Marci Geller and Paulette Boucher), and so do my close friends (Marie-Lynn Hammond, Janice Buckner). But that's the most I can afford now...
