Hi, While working on the entry for Kate Price for the EctoGuide I tried to find some webpages for her, but there don't seem to be any. Does anybody know what she's been up to recently, or whether she does have a website somewhere? I did notice that both Amazon and CDNow offer a new Kate Price album called "Isle of dreaming", which is apparently to be released on 25 April -- next week. According to the sound samples at CDNow the album is in the same style as her previous album "Deep heart's core". Any info would be appreciated! Best wishes, Marion n.p. Those are the only two albums of her i have, it seems she´s made quite a lot more - 6 solo albums and several collaborations. New album, band lineup changes Yo 'philes, I know there are others here who periodically check http://www.mollys.com who may have posted this info already. I'm about 19 digests behind at this point, so here ya are anyway :). A new Mollys album! _Only A Story_ :) :-) Catherine and Gary leave the band. :( Here's the story from the last postcard I got: "In other Mollys news, Catherine Zavala and Gary Mackender, who played on _Only A Story_, have departed the band. Catherine and Gary wanted to have more time at home and for other projects. We wish them the very best though we'll miss them. New to the band are guitarist Danny Krieger and drummer Marx Loeb. Danny is a veteran of the LA music scene and has played with such diverse acts as Debbie Davies, Johnny Rivers, Stephen Stills, Coco Montoya and many more. Marx has played with Eyepennies, Gila Bend, Al Perry and the Cattle, Chris Burroughs, and an early version of The Dusty Chaps - acts that put Tucson on the musical map." http://www.azstarnet.com/~sorenso/update29.htm (Dan Sorenson is the bass and web guy for the band) The Mollys play TONIGHT in Vancouver-I will be there if at all possible. A very nice person she is as well. I'm glad she's on the new CD, which I plan to pick up at one of these shows. For me, the good news is that Nancy McCallion, the singer/songwriter of the band, will now be totally singing her own songs. In live shows up to this point, Catherine handled a lot of the vocals, which was fine, but I'm really looking forward to hearing Nancy sing more. The other big news is that string virtuosa DARCIE DEVILLE contributed to _Only A Story_. What a treat! Darcie is one ~fine~ talent. Not sure if she's just playing on the new CD, or if she sings as well. It's going to be very interesting to hear this new CD and the new band sound. I'll let you know what I think! I've always enjoyed that album. Not the same kind of material as she's been doing in recent years, but a fun Indi-pop album. Seems to me like her stuff is endlessly being re-issued. Wasn't this album put out again just a few years ago? > also, i was debating whether or not to get tara maclean's _passenger_. i > could get it for about $8, but i was underwhelmed by _silence_. i really > like the song "evidence" and i liked some of the other tracks, but the album > didn't demand to be listened to. Her record company certainly has been doing a good job of making it widely and prominantly available quite cheaply. I tracked it on my buing spree in Charlotte last week, but it sounded just like Tara MacLean to me (beautiful but sacharine voice, too pretty and edgeless music) so that I wasn't willing to go there. Not very fair to review several seconds of listening, but since I too was underwhelmed by Silence, it didn't win me over at all. > i think that's all my questions. i saw that natalie macmaster's _my roots > are showing_ is listed as a new release (april 11, 2000). i know someone > here talked about it before, so maybe this is a us/worldwide or wider or > re-release? Oddly enough, that is one of the few discs that I have here at work. Was just listening to it this morning. I picked up a copy when she came to Albuquerque last year. If I remember correctly, I think she said it was only available in Canada at the time. I thoroughly enjoy it, and know a few other people have picked up a copy too. neal np: Portent Hue - Caterwaul nr: Jack Maggs - Peter Carey ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 16:44:52 -0600 (MDT) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: The Mollys! Hmmm, I'm not sharing in your joy on this one. The first time I saw the Mollys, I liked Nancy's singing better than Catherine's. But after a while, I found Nancy's voice to be a bit too pretty and smooth, and that I rather enjoyed the rough edges and rowdiness that Catherine brought to the band. I'll be curious to hear about the new album. When I saw them last year, it sounded like they were getting very close to being a country band. I wonder if there was any disagreements on musical direction involved in this split too. I liked the new songs pretty well. Nancy is an excellent songwriter, but I liked the Celtic-Chicana feel better than the sorta gritty country feel. neal ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 18:58:05 EDT From: Songbird22@aol.com Subject: Re: new music JoAnn says: > also, i was debating whether or not to get tara maclean's _passenger_. i > could get it for about $8, but i was underwhelmed by _silence_. i really > like the song "evidence" and i liked some of the other tracks, but the album > didn't demand to be listened to. Her new album doesn't do anything for me... Sadly. I really loved her first album and consider it an important part of getting over some things a few years ago and consider her a big influence in my own writing/music... but I can't get in to her new album. Yeah there's a few good songs and her voice sounds great, but... I don't know... Her live performance continues to be stunning and with the addition of drummer Blake Manning (Toronto) they are a powerful trio (Tara, her husband Bill Bell, and Blake), but the album is very sugary/slick/overdone compared to her live shows... I bought it cuz the cover looked interesting. And it's a great discovery :) I desribed her to a friend once as Tori and Fiona meet Ani DiFranco. Her lyrics are witty and edgy, and her piano playing is almost as beautiful as Fiona's and as powerful as Tori's. Let me voice another opinion -- _Silence_ never did anything for me, but I *love* _Passenger_. I was turned on to it thanks to a few brief snatches of it in, of all things, an episode of _Felicity_. It's not as overproduced as _Silence_ was, and the songs really grabbed me on first listen.
