Think I'll take the chance to go on about Michelle Young again. She really is fabulous. On her mp3.com page she's got some samples from an upcoming album. Oh my. Those are very much like Kate circa Never Forever or Sandra Lockwood. "A Lively toast" is a funny and weird thing of beauty. Go check it out. Does anyone know if Maggie Reilly's solo stuff lives up to her work with Mike Oldield? "To France" is a favourite song of mine. Basically it is not dance, it is not hip and it will never make it commercially. It is apparently a band of Virginia fogies my age with a real hot looking Blond German Marlena Dietrich chick in front. The Lyrics are straight out of some German Fantasy Novel. They categorize themselves as "Cabaret Rock Nouveau", sort of a post Goth Lounge. I have listened to a few of their MP3s on the web, and I have found myself laughing out of control at the uncanny Marlena like vocals. I think the "Cabaret" part of their charter refers to the Musical "Cabaret" because the songs sort of remind me of songs that some of the Eurotrashy Characters from the musical would write if they were in a Styx like Rock Band. I haven't quite figured out for myself if this band is cool or totally un cool, and that is really fascinating to me, because when I listen to them I'm sort of like that ape man in front of the rectangular thingie in 2001. Ordinarily I know right away if I like a band or I don't. So in short you may see more clearly than I on this one if they totally suck or not. I do like the fact that there are real strings and woodwinds in the band, otherwise I could just write them off as Euro Trash Pat Benatar from Camelot, but something in the final mix says to me in a very thick German accent "I do not suck, you suck, you stupid American Record collector type who is not as familiar with Aryan Mythological Archetype inspired Lounge music as you should be, shut the fvxk up and have some mead ". My thanks to Bill Mazur for identifying Mike Oldfield's 'To France', with Maggie Reilly on vocals. I can't believe I had forgotten that! So now Discovery and Tubular Bells (I and II) are on order. Can't wait to compare and contrast the two Bells. Of course, now I have to save up to get the complete Oldfield oeuvre--he is such a talented composer and musician. Again, gracie mille, as we say in Italy. Holly K. In vact, 'chelle is wearing the same clothes in the picture that she wore at the show! She played a half hour set of old favorites from the first 4 albums with a pick up band consisting of roughly 10 people from the audience who brought instruments with them. This included 3 guitars, a baritone sax, a washboard, a conga drum set, a dulcimer, a little girl on a dumbek and a back up singer. It was great fun, and the audience was wildly supportive of the effort. It sounded quite good too. After a half hour break, she came out with her band and proceeded to play for two an a half hours, playing only new music. She said she'd be recording all (or some) of it in September. The music was all over the map - ranging from folk influences to Uncle Remus-style storytelling to punk and glam to gospel testifying. As usual, an amazing show. My dad's comments: 1. I thing some of those people are really in her band (about the jam band) 2. Doesn't it bother her that her hair is alwaays in her eyes? 3. Isn't this music kind of loud? Matt & Emily (and anyone else who cares) - unfortunately, nothing was for sale more recent than Kind Heartd Woman, so I didn't pick up any discs for you. > Anyone know of a good website for her? I can't seem to find anything > with updated tourdates or anything else. A few weeks ago I posted a brief schedule for her that I found on Pollstar (www.pollstar.org). She used to have a web site called shellchock.com, but that is some game site now. I saw no indication that there was a current web site anymore. :( neal nr: Orchid Fever - A Horticultural Tale of Love, Lust, and Lunacy - Eric Hansen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2000 21:02:39 -0600 (MDT) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: Ferrick at Iota On Thu, 6 Apr 2000 jburka@min.net wrote: > so who's going to Iota on Sunday to see Melissa Ferrick? There is a very good chance that I will be at this show. Ther is a nice review of her new album in todays Post (Weekend section). Jeff, did you know that there is a concert of radical Jewish music (from the Knitting Factory label) at the same time? (Or Joe, you should be paying attention too.) Lessee, Pharaoh's Daughter, Uri Caine, DJ Olive, Drad Shepik, Matt Darriau, Rufus Cappadocia, Saido Salifoski, at DCJCC at 7. I don't actually know any of these golks, but this sounds easily as interesting as Melissa Ferrick. neal ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Apr 2000 22:11:54 -0500 From: Carolyn Andre Subject: Chicago: Sloan Wainwright/Martha Schuyler Thompson I've been really remiss about this ... for those Chicago folks who know her music or who may have heard her mentioned in discussions of Susan McKeown & ecto fest ... Sloan Wainwright & her band, plus Martha Schuyler Thompson are splitting a bill at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn on Saturday night (Saturday, 8th) ... short notice. Neither is the KaTe type ecto-voice, although much of Sloan's delivery puts me in a mind of Happy's lower range. I survived our charming spring rain to catch the two of them (Martha / Sloan) at Schuba's tonight. Unfortunately quite a small audience - about comparable to Tuesday nite when I caught Dublin duo, Zrazy, there (interesting material ranging from something I'd nearly dare call 'new agey' to contemporary & cabaret jazz). Maybe some ecto folks can make it to Berwyn (??) ... yeah, I know, a suburb. south & west. Though you can take the Blue Line out the Congress line to Oak Park Avenue, then walk a mile south to Roosevelt Road & a half mile east to the club (I did it in February - but am passing tomorrow nite) Off to dry off & warm up! Uri Caine and DJ Olive have recorded as "Zohar" with other players including Cantor Aaron Bensousan, and Caine is also known for his Mahler project on the Winter & Winter label. Pharaoh's Daughter and the Paradox Trio also look to be a whole lotta fun. Dunno if I'll be there -- I'm heading to the beach for the weekend, and will see how zonked I am when I get back. - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Jerusaklyn http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Apr 2000 21:46:17 -0700 From: Billi Mazur Subject: Re: what's this song?
