Some new stuff.. Karling Abbeygate and the Monks of Love "tin town" and "glory girl". Evocative and individual stuff. Karling has a very nice english accent and occasionally lets slip Katey screams. Indie-pop-rock-ecto stuff. The track Mumbo Jumbo man gets curiouser and nicer with each listen. April Lisa "Herculisa" an mp3 cd. Very nice and highly Jane Siberry inspired stuff by a very cool new artist. First of June "creepy crawly things" mp3 demo. A dead ringer for midperiod Tori but individual touches saves it from copycat territory. Great songs and lyrics. Thanks to Neile for helping me get these. Another mp3 discovery is Nyree who has an album called Bare. And an eponymous website. Sounds like early Tori. Some very cool songs. Cheesy album cover though. Apparently it's an 8:30 show, with the "Iota Poetry Series" from 6-8. Anyone know if I should be scared by this? I'm likely to get there relatively early so I can maybe get seating, and I'm expecting a bigger crowd than, say, Susan pulled a few weeks ago. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Apr 2000 16:27:47 -0400 (EDT) From: jburka@min.net Subject: Re: Ferrick at Iota On Thu, 6 Apr 2000, JoAnn Whetsell wrote: > Is this an NYC show? Sorry...thought that (a) most people knew I was in DC or (b) enough of us have mentioned Iota recently (what with the Susan McKeown show there last month) to be able to not say that the club is in Arlington, VA. My bad. The club is in Arlington. Limited seating (some bar stools and a couple of couches), bar food, $10 cover, no minimums, definitely not smoke-free (sigh). A great little bar/club, as long as your view of the stage isn't blocked by the chunk of load-bearing wall they couldn't pull down between the two storefronts they combined to create the bar. (perhaps I should refer to it in Joan Crawford style as "that bitch of a load-bearing wall" (Faye Dunaway, _Mommie Dearest_)) Anyway. A year or two ago Iota also bought the next storefront over and added a cafe with a more upscale menu. If you sit in certain seats at the bar in the cafe, you can see through a hole in the wall to the stage. Of course, none of this does you any good, as it's not in NYC. It came and went so fast, I never got it. Do you agree with the Elysian Fields comparison? If you like both, you should really track down Barefoot Contessa -- a bit more lo-fi, but still dreamy and terribly laid back. np - Triage - David Baerwald nr - M31: A Family Romance by Stephen Wright ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Apr 2000 23:18:00 -0400 From: "Foghorn J Fornorn" Subject: RE: what's this song? Good call Bill... I had this feeling I knew the posted lyric excerpt but couldn't place it... I digressed to Danny Wilson's "Mary's Prayer", but that wasn't it, obviously.. If you like the "To France" track I recommend seeking out "Moonlight Shadow" by Mike Oldfield, also with Maggie Reilly on vocals. Tremendous song. Annie Haslam covered it, the version from her eponymous solo album is OK, but the original is better. Annie also does a live version on her "Live Under Brazilian Skies" CD. it's a very pretty "light" cover. But Oldfield's is THE definitive version. Accept no substitutes. Oldfield has usually always chosen talented but little known female singers (qv Tubular Bells 3, The Millennium Bell, etc). Well worth following. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #97 *************************
