She's one of those artists that you either like very much or hate very much and it's mainly because of her whispy, infantile voice matched with that indie-pop moderato/slo-core that some are calling "prozzac pop" now. The true test is if you can endure the delicateness of her voice through the first few songs of any of her releases. For some, it's "wonderous and magical" for others it's maddening. As far as comparisons, I'd put her somewhere between The Gentle Waves and Dudley and Floraline with some Ono-isms with her songwriting. I believe her self-titled album (Minty Fresh Records) is considered her best work but I'd sample stuff on the 'net before you go for anything. Her Minty Fresh releases are widely available but she has a few EPs and singles through import. Check Minty Fresh's website (www.mintyfresh.com) for her stuff and other good groups. Found another Katelike songtress on mp3. Cheryl Bliss..nice atmospheric songs..kind of like Kate circa Lionheart. An album is pending. Go check her out. Regina Lund's Year Zero is very nice in a jazzy early Stina Nordenstam way. Her cover of Tina Turner's We dont need another hero is understated and might have fallen off Stina's People are Strange covers album. Her own songs are mostly quiet but not without bite. This would be Year Three I extend to all Ecto Falcon Ridgers an invitation to visit the Dittos whose 120 acres of woodland and 4 acre pond can be found on the Falcon Ridge map directly below the Festival locator where Rts. 82 and 3 meet. As it happens from July 14-16th we will be showing our laser light show at night outside our studio to celebrate our sixth anniversary. K.B. has promised to provide a new composition for the occasion, and we have a few Happy pieces in the archive. Barring another booking, the installation will remain switch-enabled through the end of the month. Alas, neither of us are keen on the Hillsdale show itself (or the bluegrass festival that actually happens right here in Ancramdale, Winterhawk; or we'd see you there. Cool!!!" Fellow misfits, geeks and freaks, I missed the first round of this discussion on Slashdot, but I wanted to pass it along now to those who would be interested. Imagine how many of us would have been treated if this kind of thing had been in place during our schooling. Imagine how *Happy* would have been treated if this kind of thing had been in place during her schooling ("she draws MONSTERS!!!"). Imagine how our children/grandchildren/etc. might be treated if this kind of thing is allowed to be put in place now or anytime in the future. V (lots of kids would have gotten rich off me!) --------------------------------------------------------------- Posted to Slashdot by JON KATZ April 04, @12:00PM http://slashdot.org/features/00/04/03/2114256.shtml The chairman of the Pinkerton Corp. has agreed to meet with me Wednesday about the more than 1,000 objections posted last week on Slashdot to the company's WAVE America so-called school-safety program. The program, kicking off in North Carolina, offers schoolkids cash, caps and other incentives to turn in "depressed and dangerous" classmates to an anonymous toll-free number. Pinkerton brass say they have read each of the Slashdot comments and want to talk. (Read more about the meeting, and post any questions you have for Pinkerton here.) The Chairman and lead Web developer of the Pinkerton Corporation have agreed to my request to fly to Charlotte, North Carolina on Wednesday and talk with company officials face-to-face abaout the objections many Slashdot readers have to the company's new "WAVE America" program. WAVE America is a private, for-profit school-safety program gearing up in North Carolina -- with the enthusiastic support of the governor -- and going nationwide. It offers incentives (caps, T-shirts, cash) to students who call a toll-free number and anonymously turn in classmates they believe to be depressed or dangerous. ... Every once in a while I don't catch the cc to ecto; I'm a little distracted as I've been really busy and still haven't done my taxes, and last week we lost my 14-year-old cat, Maddy the Intimidation Queen, to lung cancer. I miss her a lot. I guess I should make up for my lapse by giving some news. I really like the new Patti Smith. Don't much like Cat Power's cover cd. I quite like Michelle Cross, especially the live cuts and have ordered her demo disc. This has been a boring year for mainstream new releases so far.
