I just wanted to post a note that the new Nields album, _If You Lived Here You'd Be Home By Now_ is wonderful. I was getting a bit worried since _Play_ was such a disappointment, but this CD renews my faith in the band's studio chops. (They continue to be incredibly fun live.) It's still odd to me to be able to sing along to an album the very first time you hear it. I was already very familiar with most of the songs from seeing them performed live. The arrangements on the album are a departure for the band this time -- lots of strings and horns, things that can't be easily reproduced onstage. Overall the album is very evocative of the band's influences, not least among them the Beatles (the opening track, "Jeremy Newborn Street" sounds like it fell right off of an early Beatles record, and "Forever" is very _Magical Mystery Tour_), but they still manage to make the songs their own. This is the album that's going to be blasting out of the open windows of my brand-new VW Bug as I speed along the highways of the Northeast this summer. It's fitting that it was released on the first Tuesday of Spring. Looking forward to seeing Nerissa and Katryna in Manchester, CT this evening! Now I have to clean the house ... got some people coming over to sing tomorrow. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Mar 2000 12:17:38 -0000 From: "Adam Kimmel" Subject: e-mail suffixes I've noticed that a lotof you end your e-mails with a little "nl", usually followed by the name of an album, and sometimes an "np". Could someone tell >me what this means? Usually someone tries to make a comment along those lines when we welcome new people to ecto, but it doesn't always happen. So welcome.... (and to other new folks too). That's practically always the first question of people who aren't afraid to immediately ask a question :) The two most common things you'll see at the end of people's e-mails are: np = now playing nr = now reading Course, there is no restriction on that, and people make up new ones at will (though they usually need an explanation). neal np: Plague Mass - Diamanda Galas (good waking up late on a Saturday morning music) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Mar 2000 22:10:03 -0500 (EST) From: josh burnett Subject: Re: new nields album On Sat, 25 Mar 2000, meredith wrote: > I just wanted to post a note that the new Nields album, _If You Lived Here > You'd Be Home By Now_ is wonderful. (They continue to be incredibly fun live.) _Play_ was a dissapointment?Umm, wow. :) I liked it eve better than _Gotta Get Over Greta_, actually. "Easy People" is one of my favorite songs, ever, but maybe that's just me. As per the new one, I've only had a chance to listen to it a couple times so far - I just got it the other day - but I do like it. So far, there's nothing that jumps out at me like, say, "Gotta Get Over Greta" or "Easy People," but maybe that will change with repeated listens. jcb.
