Just found Pamela Zero on mp3.com..She rocks! Sounds like a cross between Laurie Anderson, Kate and Jane Siberry. Experimental but playful stuff. Go check her out. The new album by Regina Lund that I've mentioned here before includes a cover of Tina Turner's eighties hit We dont need another hero in a subdued version. Bizarre or what? regina is closer to stina nordestam in tone than Tina so this should be worth watching out for. Anna Maria __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hmmm... from what you've written there I can't tell how you want that first syllable pronounced. In any case, I looked up the original Greek in Liddell & Scott, and learned that that both "o"s are omicrons, not omegas. So both "o"s would sound like the "o" in "hot," not like the "oh" in "Oh Susannah." But I like Happy's pronunciation better. Paul P.S. Wow, I just stumbled over the tail end of 'Ojos Asi' on Friday, on late-nite TV. I was rather struck by it, but not enough to find her at Tower without a bit of prompting. I picked up the MTV disc tonight, and, neat. I do find that I enjoy more popish things in Spanish than I do in English. My theory is that it is because I am not so immediately confronted with the banality of lyrics, and can enjoy the voice as an instrument. Perhaps the quickest example to leap to mind is Olga Tanon. The music on her disc 'Siente el Amor' is splendidly infectious, and even some of the lyrics are pretty good, but if I knew that anybody understood, say the title-track, I would just die of embarasment. I think I'm finally starting to feel at least a little like part of that whole meth-woj-mike-etc. crowd, having seen Susan three times in just a few days more than 6 months. Maybe not much by NYC standards, but since I'd never seen her before ectofest, I'm pretty durned please. Anyway, the show was spectacular, and featured a number of pieces that were making their public debut. One of the highlights of the show were the brackets for the intermission. Before, she played "In London So Fair." Afterward, she played another variant of the chick-goes-off-to-sea theme called "To Fair London Towne" This one, though it has a happy ending, has a large portion in the middle in which one of the lovers is about to kill the other, at the captains order, to feed the other 33 crew members stranded on a lifeboat. It's rather humorous. But perhaps the most amazing bit the evening was a mindboggling rendition of "Son of a Preacher Man" and now I must sleep. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 00:21:01 -0500 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: oh yeah... No fair, meth, trying to keep Sarah Slean all to yourself. The chalkboard of upcoming shows at Iota lists, on 3/29, an open mic "featuring Sarah Slean." I think Valerie Nozick will be there, and I'm going to try to make it, though don't know if I'll have time. And yes, they're advertising Melissa Ferrick on 4/9. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 23:53:00 -0600 From: "girl with the curious hair" Subject: recent listenings & cat power's new cd _million dollar hotel soundtrack_ by various artists first off, this is a wim wenders soundtrack, which automatically means it's going to be brilliant. second, it has u2 on a wim wenders soundtrack, and since the last wenders they did had 'not your baby,' the most amazing song they've written in years, that's another sign. there is absolutely no disappointment on this album. the opening track, 'the ground beneath her feet,' which was incidently written by salman rushdie, has some of the most stunning guitar work of recent memory. (yay edge) after that it's more bono, with two dreamy songs, 'stateless' and 'never let me go.' in a review i read recently, the reviewer stated the album had a very blue tone to it, and after a few listenings, i agree. the entire soundtrack exists in its own realm, as so few soundtracks today do. and the music does evoke a very blue feel. (the color, not the emotion.) think of the tone of 'kind of blue' by miles davis. amazingly enough, the outstanding track is a cover of 'satellite of love' by milla and bono. i've never been a fan of milla before, but she does some amazingly brave things with her voice on this track. she goes instantly from a tiny little girl voice to a screaming, intense wail, literally in the same breath. it immediately made me want to jump up and make a mix tape and let everyone i know hear this track. absolutely incredible. _whiteout_ by boss hog usually when i buy a group of cds at a time, one's brilliant, one is horrible, and the rest are mediocre. however, this one is as great as the million dollar hotel, but for completely different reasons. i did not have boss hog's first album, but i was curious. god bless napster, though, i found a track from this album on there, downloaded it, and had to restrain myself from running to the store immediately to buy the album. cristina martinez's voice is just insane. i love it. so sexy and fierce. the cover of the cd is horrible, though. ignore it and buy the damn thing. outstanding thus far are the tracks 'jaguar', the one i downloaded, 'fear for you' and 'trouble.' the first time i heard 'jaguar', john spencer's 'oh yeah's!' were a bit annoying, but they grow on you. he's not as annoying when he's in the background as he is when he's leading the band. overall, a great, sexy, punky album. great upper. _mountains_ by mary timony mary is the lead singer of 'helium', and _mountains_ is quite piano/vocal based. i've only listened to this in passing, but it doesn't annoy me, so that's good. not too girly, not too fragile, quite sparse and just lovely. needs more listenings, which it will definitely get. about cat power: i saw on the matador website that cat power is releasing a new album next week called 'the cover album.' anyone have any more information about this? j ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #73 *************************
