Just having rambled on about the omission of Ashley Maher from your list, and then see that she's listed as an "upcoming" listing. For those interested, however, a website for her can be found at www.rahul.net/jsutton/ashley/am-home.html As well as news on her third album, The Blessed Rain, samples and ordering information, there is this little description: "Ashley Maher is a Canadian-born singer-songwriter, now living in England. Ashley's music combines African rhythms and percussion with jazz, folk and rock influences, and stunningly beautiful and intricate vocal arrangements. Her lyrics tend to follow a narrative form and and are often personal, describing her own experiences, or her friends and family." which is pretty accurate. Her music can be kind of wistful and laid back, a sort of Joni Mitchell-discovers-World Music, but her first two cd's, "hi" and "pomegranate" are well worth checking out if you can find them -- they have both been deleted. I have yet to take the plunge and order this new one, but I hope to, soon. I saw her live, and while there was too much of an "World Music is great! Let's all get up and dance!" element to it, she was still really impressive and is obviously not a dilettante when it comes to World Music, but really knows and loves her stuff. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Mar 2000 01:22:32 -0800 (PST) From: anna maria "stjärnell" Subject: Michelle Cross and Anja Hey John.. you wrote.. that is 7 songs and thus 7 mp3s long and it's brilliant... just her and cello and a few cute stories and it's SO good. So DAMMIT, go go go! Anna Maria Stjärnell, you take a good listen to this girl! Have done that. She totally rules.. Am in love again and will order her cd from her. Am obssessing about Anja too..What a fresh direction her songs take and what a great voice she has. Am so glad my mum picked up this cd for me in England. Oh did I see a mention of the Rocky Horror Show..(excited squeal). That soundtrack gets me very time. Doing the washing up while humming "I'm just a sweet transvestite from transsexual, Transylvania" always cheers me up. The talented Mr Ripley is great btw. My favourite movie star Jude Law is lovely and Matt Damon is so creepy as Ripley. Great jazz soundtrack too. It would a very good idea to ask Velvet Belly if they got any USA plans for the Fall. They are being released internationally this Spring, so I don't know what they've planned actually. I'll give them a hint about this opportunity. > np: elysian fields e.p. (hey anyone know if they are no longer in existence? > i swear i saw oren bloedow in the band "black beetle" opening for morrissey > at roseland last week....) They were supposed to be releasing a new album late last year (very late infact), but I haven't heard a thing since then. - -- Yngve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Mar 2000 11:10:58 -0800 From: "Anthony Kosky" Subject: Re: Ashely Maher I thought I'd pipe up to second Adam's recommendation (and thank him for the plug ;-). The Blessed Rain is also a great album, and well worth getting. It's prbably closer to Hi than Pomegranate in it's overall sound and production values, which is simpler and more sparse than Pomegranate. Probably this because it was produced on a limited budget and borrowed studio time. The African/"world" influences are more pronounced on The Blessed Rain than the other two albums. There are some real-audio versions of two tracks from The Blessed Rain on the web site, so you can check it out that way if you like. - -Anthony ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Mar 2000 15:03:57 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Willow & Mary Lydia Ryan in Snohomish & Bellingham Hey, Bellingham (and Vancouver?) people--heads up!
