Have just bought Julia Darlings album which I rather like. Great voice and nice songs. A bit ecto-lite , but very good anyway. Crinolines and Waltzing is the best song. Okay european ectopiles..Here's something you might like. Singer Susan Robkin at www.susanrobkin.com is offering free cds to the first response from each country in exhange for a review of her album Horse of a different Color. I got one and its very good. The album Paula Cole should've made instead of the lousy Amen. And..Does anyone know the singer Tania Maria? On which album is her version of the stones Satisfaction? Is it easy to find? "enjoyed" is certainly the wrong word, but it was good to read about this remarkable woman. i had heard of her some time ago and was interested in listening to her music and am only sorry that i waited until after her death to get inspired enough to do so. yemenite songs is on order from absound. also, clannad released yet another greatest hits album. this i won't buy, but i thought the guide page should be updated for most recent release. Susana Baca also has a new album, either released this past tuesday or tomorrow. i will certainly get that. and if anyone figures out the mystery of when and where jill sobule's new album pink pearl is available, please let us know. ttfn!! Colford" Subject: Emm Gryner's Science Park I haven't posted to Ecto in a while, and I'm sitting here at work listening to Emm Gryner's Science Park, so I thought I'd send a quick comment. Neile! I'm shocked that you don't find this album enjoyable. Well, actually, I'm not that shocked. It's a trifle too pop for you, isn't it? I was a fan of Public, Emm's previous album, and I find Science Park to be just delightful. I'm not a big lyrics person, but hers jump out at me. In fact, Emm's got my favorite line of 1999 with the classic, "You're forgettable like 1993" from "Disco Lights." The songs are pretty poppy, but the production is so spare and stripped down that you feel like you're sitting in the room with her as she performs. While I'm talking about Emm, I should have posted this a few weeks ago. I had the wonderful fortune to see Emm perform live with our own Jessica Weiser at Brandeis University. This live radio broadcast was set up by ecto's Ofar Inbar and since my boyfriend works at the Library, right next door, I took advantage of this extremely intimate (bagels included) show. Jessica opened with a short five (?) song set of lovely yet dark acoustic numbers. I picked up her CD, Transition, and it's quite good. I'm loooking forward to her new one which she says is going to be quite a departure. Emm performed with a terrific guitarist/drummer/singer from the British band, The Unbelievable Truth. She played a terrific set of songs from Science Park and Public. She even took a couple requests, but unfortunately, although she tried, she couldn't remember how my request, "Stardeep" started! I hope I didn't embarass her. Anyway, it was a terrific show, and I'm really pleased that Jessica mentioned it on ecto so I could go! Okay, that's enough for now. Take it easy, folks! Well, surprisingly, no one replied. Of course, I'd typed her name wrong--spelt it phonetically. Might have thrown people off. Her name is Jennifer Parsignault, and CD now has her CDs--the latest titled Oh, My. She lists her influences as Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Sarah McLachlan, Jude Cole, Shawn Colvin, Kevin Gilbert. Her own website is http://www.greene-house.com/ Audio samples are available in both places. She had two albums out previously. She was born in France, grew up in Boston, and now lives in LA. Definitely ectophilic. Has anyone heard or seen her play? Jeff Hanson n.p. Signature Sounds - 2000 Collection n.r. Ah, but that's the thing: both this site and squonkopera.com (which actually seems to point to the same pages) refer to some sort of Broadway production, not the band in question. I've tried to find something on the web, and came up with nothing that would suggest they are still around. Sadly I think we can assume that after they lost the lead vocalist, as Cy mentioned in her post, the band ended up breaking up. Which is probably just as well - it wouldn't be the same band without her. - ------------------------------------------------------ "If we took a random sampling of observers of the same sunset, chances are a few would think the sun got larger, a few would insist it stayed the same size, and an appallingly large number would have been looking in the wrong direction." -- Dr. Science - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 23:43:12 -0500 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: Re: Squonk Andrew Fries wrote: > Ah, but that's the thing: both this site and squonkopera.com (which > actually seems to point to the same pages) refer to some sort of Broadway > production, not the band in question. The Squonk Opera that is putting on the broadway show is big chunks of the old Squonk Opera which released albums like _howandever_. As to how the new vocalist sounds, I can't comment...though I am a bit curious about the sort of performance art they're doing now... jeff ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #58 *************************
