Some mp3.com finds.. Melayne Web is marvellous. Sounds a lot like early Tori. She has an album out soon called White Lament. Jude Cowan is english and has a great cabaretish track that you can download.A female Tom Wats with a touch of Kate. Elizabeth Schaeffer is likened to Lene Locvih and Kate and is totally cool. She has done four albums.Yikes! this is going to cost me someday. Oh and Buffy is finally on swedish television..the first series if any of you can remember that far back. I anticipate hearing Rasputina on the show. Anna Maria np-Wendy Rule-Zero nr-Bret Easton Ellis-Glamorama __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? No harm in grabbing hyperlinks where they exist, but don't expect distributors to show excerpts that reveal weaknesses in their publications. A critic can't be asked to submit to editing by the publisher's choice, because the publisher will hide flaws and exaggerate virtues. We can neither fear nor ignore the legal system. We live within it and must use it. If some day a critic is intimidated by that dark corporate legislator "Sony Bono" I suggest that we call on each other for reinforcements and find a sunny Pro Bono. For the most part, the penalties for fair use infringement are not worth pursuit by the Sony-like companies, because no money changes hands, the case law of "excerpt by critic" is well stacked against copyright holders, and cynical executives will see that the bad publicity of trying to stiffle criticism will warn people off the very works they seek to protect. Beyond Napster, there is a very interesting case developing in DVD's with the Internet publication of encyrption cracking code under Linux called DeCSS. If you have access to the NY Times on-line go to: http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/00/02/cyber/cyberlaw/11law.html This case touches close to home for me. I have an indie copyright portfolio of motion pictures made during a 35 year career. Almost everything sits idle at the moment waiting for my audience to come along. My work is dependent on a alternative paradigm to viewing standards now found in existing commercial markets. My art works are meant to be seen in repetition like paintings rather than a few times or once as are most narrative fiction films and tapes. Hence, DVD's represent a vehicle for me, since they can be played endlessly and in random order like CD's. When the visual arts are critiqued by a measurement similar to music then my art may be fairly judged. These critics do not yet exist. Given that I'm still waiting for the type of criticism that will favor my art, it hurts me to have the length of copyrights shortened. Perhaps my artworks are simply not going to be appreciated, but for other artists of similar bent, if not myself, the thought of penalizing art made before its time seems ironic and unfair. I have endured a life of poverty in order to create work with artistic integrity, and I'd like my family to reap what rewards that sacrifice may bring. I'd like to apologize for a typo made in a previous letter. Artists beg for remuneration not "renumeration." According to the new (Feb. 18) issue of Entertainment Weekly, Joan has officially parted ways with Mercury and is currently working with producer Mitchell Froom. The article says she is "about to sign with a new label," and that her new material is more "hard-rocking" than RELISH. - --Sue Trowbridge trow@slip.net np: Verbow, NEW HISTORY ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2000 19:33:31 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: Over the Rhine bits and pieces >Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2000 11:18:58 -0500 (EST) >To: over-the-rhine-announce@actwin.com >From: OTRhine@aol.com >Subject: bits and pieces >Sender: owner-over-the-rhine-announce@actwin.com >Reply-To: owner-over-the-rhine@actwin.com > > >Here are some odds and ends to add to your calendar. Here's the deal: in return for keeping the album, you give some comments to the Ectophiles' Guide. Specially, what genre links best suit the artists' music (or a description using the Guide's genre terms if you're up for that), some comparable artists (you might recommend this artists to people who like x and y), some general comments, and a priority level (Must have, highly recommend, Recommended, Only recommended for pure folk lovers, etc.) and specific comments about the album in and of itself. These don't need to be dissertations unless you are so inspired. Negative comments are welcome as long as it's clear that you like the idea of what the artist is trying to do (meaning that you won't rag on a folksinger for being a folksinger but for where s/he falls short of being a _good_ folksinger, for an electronica artist for doing electronica, etc.) and of course it's also helpful to let us and the artist now what s/he is doing right as well as doing wrong. In this specific case, the artists are: Georgette Dashiell, a folk artist, with a kind of Joan Baez voice; the sound is stripped-down (countryish?) and clear. There are samples of hers at www.cdbaby.com and www.brokenangel.com Sheryl Skye, a deep-voiced pop/folk/rock singer-songwriter with a bit of a blues touch. There are samples at www.skye.com. Please only respond if you're willing to do this in a timely manner and if not (or if you don't like what the artist is trying to do) if you're willing to pass the disc on to someone else. First come first served.
