Well, if anyone will be in Minneapolis on Feb 15th I am hosting a Sarah Slean concert at my house! She is performing with Tory Cassis (who just happens to have been nominated for a JUNO). If anyone is interested, email me for details! ~~Amy ecalos.com - Women in Music http://www.ecalos.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2000 22:41:43 -0600 From: "girl with the curious hair" Subject: recent purchases swimmer - 'surreal' this guy (Anday McCarron) has a very interesting voice. very. it's huge and expansive and beautiful and evocative. it's impossible to describe. the music itself is in the radiohead vein, guitars and etc. rock band. nothing that new, but interesting if nothing else. the tracks tend to blend into one another, but 'halo' really stands out for me. it's a fun album, worth checking out. needs more listenings. trashmonk - 'mona lisa overdrive' if i had gotten this album earlier last year, it would have been in my top ten list. he used to be the lead singer of dream academy, an 80's band, worked with pink floyd, has a long history, but this is his first solo album. it's lovely. it's thickly layered and his voice is quite interesting. the first song i had heard, 'girl i used to know', which is also the opening track, is just lazy and so quiet and soft and it ends by just collapsing in on itself. the album then swings from rocky 'polygamy' to upbeat 'amaryllis' to stunning 'sapphire' and ends with the breathy, fragile 'on the way home.' the entire album is just so beautiful. it's electronicish without being obvious. a3 - 'cold harbor lane' this band is probably best known for the theme of 'the sopranos', 'woke up this morning', which is really an intense, awesome song. the band refer to themselves as 'motherfucking country blues acid house rock' on the album and it fits. it also has smatterings of gospel and techno, all chronicling drug addiction. it's an older album (1997) and i just got around to buying it, and i'm kicking myself for waiting so long. my favorite song is probably still 'woke up this morning', but every track is strong, especially the opening 'converted' ('let's go back to church'). a very dark album, but beautifully structured. various artists - 'alright, this time just the girls' this is a collection of female bands, most of them indie, a lot of them broken up or impossible to find the recordings of. it's a 2-cd collection and i found it for $12 which is a fabulous deal as far as i'm concerned. standouts: sacred miracle cave, calamity jane, april march (who has two duets on this album), stool pigeon's cover of 'into something good', and the chubbies. there are 48 songs on the collection, most of them about 2 minutes long and pure punk, and it's serious fun to listen to. kathy acker - 'redoing childhood' this is a spoken word album, but i adore it. the background music was recorded by tribe 8, ralph carney, joe gore, kenny wollenson, david cunningham, and hal willner. she reads her work as if she's a lead singer in a punk band. god bless kathy. i'm also readdicted to the end of violence soundtrack, which i think should be required listening for everyone. actually, all wim wenders soundtracks should be required listening. it has tracks by spain, a duet between u2 and sinead o'connor, howie b, the latin playboys, ry cooder, all sorts of fun stuff. j np: 'shag tobacco' by gavin friday nr: 'the book of memories' by peter nadas ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Feb 2000 00:44:40 -0500 From: John J Henshon Subject: Re: Meredith's NYC Shows Post.
