Her first album Unique was a lot like early Stina. The forthcoming Year Zero will be fun to hear as she's also covered Brian Eno's By this river. Have just started listening to Nina Hynes debut ep Creation..Intriguing and odd. She sings like Bjork and has similar atmospheres in her songs but also bursts of backwards MBVesque guitars. She shows a lot of promise and I hope she records a fulllenght soon. Anna Maria np-Nina Hynes-Creation __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I completely forgot about Bachue when I posted my question! I've had their great CD, "A Certain Smile" for several months, ever since hearing the group on NPR's Thistle and Shamrock. I hardly concur with Bob -- their music is indeed wonderful. Sometime at the end of last year, Bill Adler asked: > Does anybody have recommendations for Ecto-sounding music in French? The french-language music industry seems to churn out a lot of women divas, among them: Lara Fabian (Belgium/Quebec), Axelle Red (Belgium), Laurence Jalbert (Quebec), Patricia Kaas (France). These are pop "vedettes", they get radio airplay and sell well. Lara Fabian has already been mentioned here on ecto i think. Personally, Lara reminds me excessively of Celine Dion (if i hear another one of her "je t'aime"s, i'll screeeee-am!). But I remember liking Patricia Kaas's first couple of albums 10 years ago - the songs fit particularly well her great sultry voice. There are however lesser-known franco musical people who are closer to the ecto sphere. Here is my topmost suggestion from the Quebec scene: Jorane Peltier, known simply as 'Jorane', a ~24 year-old singer/songwriter/ cellist who took us by storm here this past year. Think of "girl with a piano" but substitute cello for piano. Her album's sound ranges from quiet and folky voice/cello to soaring funky rocking full band. Something reminding of Kate Bush/Tori Amos in many of the songs. The lyrics are mostly in French, 2 songs in English, and a couple more are just vocalizations. So far, Jorane has been playing concerts mostly in Quebec, but lo! she is venturing out into English Canada this week and is playing at the Rivoli in Toronto on January 28. She is really quite awesome live, i highly recommend this show to those in the area! www.jorane.com ("discographie" => soundbytes) caroline ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 19:21:24 -0500 From: Paul Kim Subject: shiveree and kyler I was wondering if anyone else here has heard about Shivaree. The editor-in-chief of Billboard magazine devoted his column a couple weeks ago to them. He seems to have good taste, having devoted columns and space on his top ten list last year to both Kate Rusby and the Respond Benefit CD. He spoke very highly of Shivaree and said that theirs was the best concert he attended in 1999. They're on Capitol records and you can check out some of their songs at www.capitolbroadcasts.com They're doing a small tour along the northeast corridor, playing in cambridge tonight, NYC tomorrow at Fez, Bryn Mawr PA on thursday, Iota's in VA on monday, pittsburgh next tuesday, and the tuesday after that again in Cambridge. The lead singer, Ambrosia Parsley, grew up singing standards and it comes across in the music. I have no idea how to describe the group though. They've got a little slink to them, a little twang, a little pop, a little indie, a little rock, and a little jazz. Also, for those of you in the NYC area, a friend of mine from Berklee is gonna be performing down there the first weekend of February. Her name is Kyler England and she's a talented singer and songwriter with a rich, soulful voice. Her music reminds me of Harbinger-era Paula Cole, Tracy Chapman, and Jonatha Brooke. I'm not sure if she'll be bringing her band along for the shows in NY, but if she does, they'll be quite kicking. Last night woj and I ventured into NYC to experience two shows, only a bit of waiting in between. :) Oh yeah, Mike Curry was there for the first one too. ;> The first show was at Brownie's, an interesting new Canadian group called "Thirsk". Some of you may remember a group called Rose Chronicles, fronted by a singer named Kristy Thirsk. :) I had no clue she had a new band, and even less of a clue that she would be playing in New York!!! That was a nice surprise. They played a half-hour set, which was largely non-mind blowing, except for Kristy's amazing, wonderful, incredible voice. Wow. Seeing it happen in person was pretty impressive. After that we killed some time at the Tower Outlet (didn't find anything worth buying, though) and then headed over to CB's Gallery to catch Kristeen Young. As usual she was on after the Goth DJ, so we got to listen to some old Danielle Dax, Cure, Joy Division, Fields Of The Nephilim, and Siouxsie tunes while waiting for her to come on. Yesterday's KY fashion statement: Rear-view mirrors growing out of her head. (Amazingly, she only knocked over the microphone with them once during the whole performance.) We chatted with her for a couple minutes beforehand, and I found that it is utterly impossible to carry on a conversation with someone who has rear-view mirrors attached to her head. It was the longest KY show I've seen: almost a full hour. I'll leave it to Don Keller to post the setlist, since he grabbed it off the stage, but there were quite a few new songs, as well as favorites such as "Incubator" and "Hi-TEK". The new songs were pretty much more of the same KY style: lots of banging piano, driving drums and bass, overlaid with Kristeen screaming a lot. :) It was great. Definitely worth getting home at 2 am on a Monday night. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 19:35:10 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: Sarah Slean looking for help with more shows! >Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 10:25:10 -0800 >From: what@ican.net (What?
