But the problem is that she *doesn't* sound all >that much like Sarah to me. heh. i was thinking about this last night. while driving home from work, i was listening to ectophile radio (aka, friday night on wpkn) and kathy dimeno (sp?) played a significant chunk of _blue parade_. now, i haven't listened to that album all that much -- as i was just mentioning to jessica weiser, i don't listen to most albums as much as i'd like (the price of so much good music out there, i guess). mostly i've been replaying in my head the live versions of songs since i've been fortunate enough to catch sarah play live a few times in the past couple months. so, as i listened to about half of _blue parade_ on the radio last night (in the car, when my powers of concentration are at their highest ;) ), i was really struck by how much the *music* on _blue parade_ reminded me of sarah mclachlan's. it's not her voice at all! it's the production and arrangement, mostly background keyboard washes and guitar licks and that sort of thing. strangely enough, i don't hear any of that in her live shows. even more strangely, i don't hear any of it right *now* as i listen to _blue parade_ in headphones. hmmm. my car must have a built-in mclachlanizer filter or something. oy! woj p.s. ms. slean ruled at cb's gallery on thursday night. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Jan 2000 18:38:47 +0100 (W. Europe Standard Time) From: Marion Kippers Subject: Perla Batalla - Mestiza Hi, Some time ago I received a disc to review for the Ectoguide by Perla Batalla. She is a Californian singer of Mexican decent, and "Mestiza" is her second solo-album. It took me a while to realise why her name seemed familiar, but all of a sudden I remembered I've seen Perla Batalla live a long long time ago, doing backing vocals for Leonard Cohen, way back when he was on tour in Europe in 1988 (the "I'm your man" tour). At the time I was not only impressed by her powerfull voice but also by her stage presence and looks... :-) (there is a picture of her on that tour in the Leonard Cohen files at http://nebula.simplenet.com/cohen/panel2.html ). She can also be heard on backing vocals on Leonard Cohen's live cd's from his 1988 and 1993 tours, "Cohen Live--Leonard Cohen in concert" (released in 1994). Perla has a strong, clear voice, not unlike Paula Cole's -- at times she also has the same diction and frasing as Paula, making them sound very much alike. But mostly I would say Perla's voice is warmer and more emotional, less affected. Her music ranges from beautiful intense songs with traditional Mexican influences to Gloria Estefan-ballads-like smooth pop songs. She sings both in English and in Spanish. Apparently Perla Batalla's first eponymous solo-album was released in 1994 - would anybody like to comment on that album for the Guide? "Mestiza" was released in 1998 or 1999 (I've seen different dates in different places). I quite like this album. A bit too smooth/lush/pop-y in places, but Perla does have a warm, clear and strong voice and some songs are very beautiful. Though I can't help thinking of Paula Cole at times (especially the way she sings "When the Man and the Woman say 'Come' / When the Spirit and the Bride say 'Come' / When the rhythm of the nights say 'Come to me' / Yeah" in the song "Morning Star" would not be out of place on Paula Cole's album "Harbinger"). Most songs are in English, some are Spanish or a combination (with translations in the booklet). There are some very intense, sparse songs, with a beautiful classical Spanish guitar and evocative lyrics, in which Perla's voice shines, like the opening/closing song "Scarlet Thread" or the highlight of the album for me, "Iberia". Those songs almost have a Madredeus-like quality and make the album already worthwhile for me. Other songs are more powerful and strong, like "Camino a Santiago", and there are some lush soft pop songs that stay on the right side of lushness. And some songs are too smooth, too much produced, too sweet, so they loose the emotional impact of the lyrics, which is a pity. But overall I find "Mestiza" a very enjoyable album to listen to. Perla has a website at http://www.perla.com/ for more information and real-audio samples. [Neile, the comments for the Guide are on their way.] Best wishes, Marion n.p. Perla Batalla - Mestiza n.r. I suggest every new and used CD store in your area for starters. Then all the on-line music stores you can find. If you still can't find it you might want to try the on-line auction sites (such as eBay or Amazon.com). Surprisingly enough, Happy's stuff turns up here alot! I've seen a number of Rhodes 1 CDs on them. Good Luck! Pat: Yeah? Happy: Never mind... just wanted to bug you. I believe it's some dialog between Happy and her recording engineer Pat Tessitore. It was probably just a little of Happy's sense of humor showing. If anyone else can add to this, I'ld love to know also!
